Well, how I see it (don't know if it's actually canon), she dies and the family is coping. The father is drinking, the mother is compulsively cleaning, and the boyfriend visits her memorial. Her time of death is pinpointed exactly to when the clock stops, the family disappears, and the TV screen turns to static. Her transition to purgatory (or wherever that is) is symbolized by the snowy field. It's neutral in color and desolately barren. The one thing I don't understand is the boyfriend visiting the field in the beginning.
