So many people claim Greeks burnt down their homes which is the stupidest thing... My grandfather was told by his father that they one day would return to their home and all that was temporary... A few years before he died we visited to see where their house used to be and it was a flat, which made my grandfather cry... Greeks thought they would return one day, they had no reason to burn their own properties, its the dumbest thing someone can say

The Turks didn't need to burn the whole city to the ground to seize your precious jewels and real estate. If you are not an idiot, you may perceive that the soldiers of the victorious army do not need to do this. If they had such a purpose, instead of burning the city, the soldiers with a 1-meter rifle in their hands would have broken into your door, robbed you, seized your valuables, killed you, and left with ease. no army burns "its" land after it has "own" recaptured it. because it is not even necessary. watch the video again. You will see your own stupidity. The stupidity of people who think they deserve all of Anatolia. And you didn't get the bullshit you said from your late grandfather, but from the propaganda bullshit you parroted from your elementary school teachers.

But the Army had a reason. They used scorched earth on Asia Minor, why dont they use it to slow down Turkish Army while they are entering on İzmir/Symrna? Also one day we will return rhetoric was used to give hope for kids to calm them. Everyone using this rhetoric time to time. We cant be realy sure who burnt İzmir. Greeks? Possible. Turks? Possible. Armenians? Possible. We can only know that city was destroyed after this fire.

To the many commenters saying that the Greek army set the fires (even though the Greek Navy had already disembarked and left by the time the fire started)... You may find that up for debate, as some may find the fact that the retreating Greek army burned Manisa up for debate. What nobody can debate is the fact that the majority of the people affected or murdered were innocent people who were just trying to live their lives in what had long been a multi-cultural city. This also cannot be denied: The Greek army didn't gouge out the eyes of Metropolitan Chrysostomos and drag him through the streets with horses, the Greek army didn't set up machine gun posts to contain the refugees on either side of the quay side, trapping them between the fires and the ocean. The Greek army didn't deport all Greek and Armenian males to the interior of Turkey and condemn most of them to death. So claiming Turkish innocence in the whole affair is not only incorrect, it's also absurd. Saying that: It's not the fault of Turkish people that they have been brought up and educated in a system of propaganda and lies, with little access to verifiable historical sources. So try to be kind when dealing with some commenter's lack of understanding and blind allegiance. They're the product of Nationalistic whitewashing of history, and if anything this should provide some insight into have the problems of 1922 have hardly diminished.

This time probably not Greek army but Armenian irregulars who didn’t want to leave useful property. Greek army set fires on other cities Alasehir Salihli Turgutlu just one day before this one so that’s why people have this perspective.

Article 59 - Greece recognizes the obligation to repair the damages caused by the actions of the Greek Army or administration in Anatolia contrary to the laws of war. On the other hand, Turkey absolutely renounces any demands against the Greek Government regarding repairs, taking into account the monetary situation of Greece arising from the prolongation of the war and its consequences. Article 59 of the international Treaty of Lausanne. This treaty was signed by Venizelos and the Greek delegation and was accepted in the Greek parliament. Why Venizelos and the Greek delegation did not mention the Izmir fire.? May September 19, 1919, came to Izmir, the Greek High Commissioner Aristides Stergiadis, who left on September 25, 1922, why didn't he say "The Turks burned Izmir "?Stergiadis has also written a book on this subject. There is also a report from the Serbian Izmir fire brigade director, an Austrian citizen. There are countless cities and villages that were burned by the Greeks.Among the buildings burned by the Greeks are the Onassis' farmhouses. If you want, I will also write Onassis's sister Maria/MAKBULE

I heard so many terrible stories from my Greek family members and others. Thank you for sharing the Pathe movie. It's hard to believe those British and American ships could sit there watching and do nothing for nearly 30 days of slaughter. Like so many genocides, there are always witnesses who do nothing. Turks say nonsense that Greeks and Armenians set the fire, there was no way that happened becouse every Greek thought that they would turn back to Smyrna, to their homes, they thought that they would stay to Greece for a while and then they would return, i heard stories that they hide all their jewelleries to their houses so they can find their fortune when they would turn back (some Turks got lucky and Found them when they took the Greek's houses) so they had no reason to start a fire. And that's not only for Smyrna, every single Greek from Asia minor and the black sea thought so, they thought that they would turn back

i read one of the greek's memories in 1922 in İzmir. he is saying when the fire came up other Armenians and greeks set fires from their houses because of they heard turks are coming and they dont wanna live under the turkish gov. also the brtis consules are in this huge fire too. If we are only talking about in Izmir, it doesnt matter turks or other civilization start the fire. but as a turkish we all aware of that from the 26 august to 18th september while greek people are running from turks they set all the houses on fire. In Manisa, Eskişehir, Bilecik, Kütahya. If you have some general knowladges about the wars when you understand that youre losing then you start to try stalling. archives are saying only in Manisa +8000 houses burnt by greeks. so its not a big surprise if greeks could do that. im really sorry for who is innocent tho. but i never forget and forgive this horrifying war. i hope we never been in this condition with greeks and armeanians again. its too painful for both sides.

@@mahzaleyli4267 Low in behold there's a video of youtube about an old woman from Greece that had experienced this horrible Burning of Smyrna and as everyone else she said the exact same thing "My parents and i were on the last boat and swam all the way to Xios so as not to be a casualty of the Burning Of Smyrna, caused by the Turkish troops which was ordered by Mustafa Kemal." But i guess with more controversy about this disaster we'll never know until there are secret photos and videos of who actually did it.

Evil destroys itself. The wind was from the sea when fire was set, the fire was plotted to advance towards the east where th Turks used to live, but then suddenly southern winds came and obviously fire went to the north where the non Turks used to live. I advice the curious read the report(s) of the us embassy in Izmir too.

I am not Turk. I am arab of Algeria and i have a question: you didnt ask yourself why turks who accepted greek and armenian presence for more than ten centuries of coexistence would suddenly evacuate them? What was the reasons? And why turks who already won their city back would burn it?!. If you are neutral and reasonable you should know that greeks incited by british and french had massacred turks in greece bulgaria romania and balkans. Armenians incited by russia killed turks. Greeks invaded turkey and arbored greek flag in izmir smyrna. What do you expect turks to do? Offer the greeks soldiers some roses or maybe their wifes?. Another fact: the greek retreating army who knew that turks would take back the city greek army set fire in houses to avoid turks take benefit of te houses and so the fire spread also to turkish sections due to wind. Remember that before navarin battle 1827 more than half of greece population was muslim. Muslims were slaughtered brutally and mosques burned or made churches. The west approved the extermination of muslim saying greece took back their land. Ok same logic: turks took back their city from greek army. But with one diffrence : turks didnt kill armenians and greeks like the christians did to muslims. Turks simply evacuated greek soldiers. And please dont lie. Only the retreating destroys because the winning army would never burn its land. Greeks destroyed and burned houses preferring not to leave them for the turk. Turk army didnt need to burn their prestigious and admirable city because they already won as the greek fron collapsed. When turk soldiers entered izmir they found their city devastated by the christian-set fire. Turks dudnt evacuate the christians. The christians escaped the fire to the beach. And when the turkish army came they gave bread to the population on the land.
