Burning pellets in a solo stove!

Great idea. Using the extra stand as a base for the metal mesh is smart. Allows for air flow and prevents pellets from falling through the larger holes at the bottom which would clog up the stove. Well done, sir.

i just bought the yukon...and cant wait to use it...ive brought a small bag of pellets on a hike for a campfire..and it sucked..they did not burn well at all...im thinking the air flow had alot to do with it...SERIOUS QUESTION...How well did the pellets burn in the stove with your mods..great idea by the way..as in was it able to burn well enough to do the double burn and have good flame as if you were using a few logs..and thanks for the vid...great idea

Welcome to the solo stove community! I find that it is far easier to get the afterburn with pellets than with logs. With logs it takes quite a while as you need a thick base of coals going. That is particularly true with one the size of the Yukon. You have to feed it lots of logs. My neighbor has one and I’ve never seen it the jets fire up. The key with pellets is air flow and letting them get established. Once going they crank heat and burn off with very little ash. I typically start my fires with a pile of pellets, let it establish, then I add logs, and let them get established. Then I feed it a scoop of pellets here, a log there, etc. It’s a great investment and lots of fun!

Have you tried the pellet adapter solo stove came out with? If so, how do you think it compares to the diy version? It seems your screen would have more airflow. Do you happen to know the size of the circles? Good job 👏

The perforations are 1/8”. I’ve never seen the solo stove one but I figured they would come out with one eventually. 🤙🏼

I have tried lots of things, including pizza grates. They never last, at least with the fires I burn. I pack it full and keep it ripping. This stainless steel grate is still in perfect condition 🤙🏼

You only show how to lite it?! Well how does it burn? And what does it do when it’s going almost empty. How does the fire end? Seen solo stoves with wood pellets turn into a smoke machine when the pellets are almost burned out. They don’t react like wood. Wood turns into hot coal and don’t go smoking at the end..

Nothing gets the afterburners going like pellets. I have never experienced wood pellets smoking except in my smoker cooking a brisket 😂. Pellets are nice because they burn down to practically nothing. I typically do a mix of pellets and logs though. I like to start with pellets because I can light it and walk away for a while to do something else around the yard. Then once it’s going I’ll add a couple logs. Then I alternate logs and scoops of pellets as the night goes on. As far as what happens at the end of a fire I can’t really say. I don’t stand around a smoldering fire, I go inside.

I made it. Find a welder/metal fabricator near you and see if they can make you one. It’s 16 gauge perforated 304 stainless steel. A 24” by 24” piece is about $125 bucks. Not cheap but anything less will not last.

@@sadfur8728 a flat piece works fine. I can fill it with 30lbs of pellets, throw in a couple fire starters and it’ll burn for ages

I would imagine so but don’t have anything to support that. I have heard SS is pretty good about replacing them under warranty though

It’s 16 gauge perforated 304 stainless steel. I cut it with a plasma cutter mounted to a circle jig.

Edited: Manufacture guide lines don’t recommend the use of wood pellets on the Solo Stove. There most be a reason why is not recommended. Go ahead and damage your Solo Stove, throw your investment down the toilet…not too smart of you.

It’s a fire pit, not an investment The reason SS doesn’t recommend pellets is because they could clog the vents in the base of the fire box. The screen I fabricated out of perforated 16 gauge 305 stainless steel eliminates this problem. Thank you for your concern though✌🏼

FYI - Solo Stove just launched a stainless steel screen on their website. Now you can burn pellets in your solo stove without fear of damaging your precious investment! 😂
