I thought you would use the steel wool to cover the ring completely. So than you could make like an opening shot of like a whole burning into the wool revealing the ring behind it. And you could speed the ignation and the burning of the first 'portal' to the ring up to make it just 'appear' . so it would be like a cool movement thing with the camera panning over the ring a tiny little bit while the rest of the steel wool burns around it. Reflecting of the ring and shit from different closeup angels.
