I love pre-2000s cars, my plan is to buy an Impreza with ej22 engine, which as I read is bulletproof, lift it, put new wheels, get this thing a roof rack and some led bars. Then have infinite fun!

So my setup is a lil bit diff from yours. Im using 99 outback oem lift kit. Consisting of the struts and trailing arm bracket. When lowering the subframes with the spacers im probably going to need to add the steering joint from the outback over to my impreza huh? I recently put my missing outback struts over since the ones i was provided were blown. Now that im fixing some rust on the wagon ive decided to revisit the lift project. I added the struts in back and now i have this severe rake look to it it sits so much higher now in back than when i had a 96 legacy strut outback spring and 99 impreza tophat. (Thats all i could find in a hurry to get my car back rolling again) but now i have new 99 outback struts and impreza tophat. Im looking add the outback front transverse link front subframe spacer. transmission spacer. Rear diff spacer. And rear subframe spacer. Plus trailing arm bracket spacer to fix caster issue. Any help would be appreciated.
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
I actually took my steering u-joint right out, made a long scratch on the shaft for reference, and cut apart to weld a tube in for lengthening (be sure to keep it cool during!!). I converted mine to Forester all around, which includes modifying the rear tophat bolt pattern (this may fix the big camber you're getting). If you run into any other mismatches in camber/toe/caster etc, then try to match your suspension components all from the same platform (all Forester, all Outback, etc). Hope that helps & good luck, they're way fun lifted up!
@sleeksm44 жыл бұрын
@@Tinker1837 i was trying to keep from drilling holes thats why i swapped over to my gf tophats. I still dunno why it sits so much higher in the rear now after i switched over to outback struts/impreza tophats.doesnit need to settle or something? I have too much caster not too much camber. As for the steering link i think im gonna use the outback link since i cant weld nor have a welder handy to use myself.

@@Tinker1837 Yeah, I found that video later about the brakes. Wheel bearings are supposed to be fast-wear items on these things according to the forums. Long term it would be interesting to see the bearing wear if any from doing everything the wrong way. BTW what wheels did you get? I can't find any 5 on100mm 15x6" steel wheels , with less than 48mm offset, that are hub-centric for less than a mint. And are your wheel-spacers hub-centric? Honestly I'm finding for the price of the "wrong" wheels plus spacers to correct offset, you can buy brand new custom aluminum wheels with all the "right" specs. But who wants to spend $400-$600 just for a set of winter wheels? Especially on a 95 Legacy LSi!

I thought putting larger wheels/tires would ruin the drive line... after all its all wheel drive not 4 wheel drive.
@Tinker18375 жыл бұрын
Perfectly understandable! I honestly thought it would be a constant battle to keep ahead of driveline failures, but so far the only issue was a single front wheel bearing that failed due to a huge hit during some very aggressive offroad trail runs. And of course the lifetime of most any part in the driveline will be reduced due to not just the tire size, but also the increased leverage caused by all the lift (which will affect suspension components as well).

You running spacers on those tires? If so what size spacers you got for totally not going against your disclaimer reasons
@Tinker18373 жыл бұрын
Yes, they also convert from the Subaru bolt pattern to more common small truck pattern for more wheel options (all info is in description)

What struts are you using? I can't believe the geometry looks fairly accurate with what appears to be OEM arms! Are they as stock as they look?
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
We'll those are Forester struts, but they have big 4" tall spacers on top to get all that lift, also spacers for the front/rear subframes. It's roughly a 50-50 split between suspension & body lift at this point. I'd like to ditch the spacers & set it up for proper long travel shocks & ditch the OEM arms for tubing & with spherical joints. But first I have some rust to tackle!

I custom fabricated the whole thing. I made unequal length headers with 1.75" pipe for it's 2.2L single-port engine (because it needed the Subaru rumble) with a 2-to-1 collector into 2.5" at the high-flow cat right before the first v-band, then a small resonator running tucked up tight until another v-band just before the rear diff, then up and over to a vibrant turbo muffler and ending in a VW Beetle style megaphone chrome tip.

so are those 30" tires on just the forester suspension? or did you add a lift kit as well? if you did add a lift kit would the 30" tires work without the lift kit? I'm trying to do something similar to my 96 impreza wagon!
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Lift kit! A great 4" kit from SJR. No, you would have to do SO much cutting on Forester suspension only. If you're handy you could make a roughly 2" kit fairly easily.

@@Tinker1837 alright, so its a total 4" lift? the forester suspension and sjr kit correct?

Need? No. Does it help? Yes. My "Outback Impreza" in this video has 4.11 gears which helps, & the Forester's 4.44 gears would be even better.

@@Tinker1837 I just got a Legacy Outback in May. It's a 2000 with a EJ25 2.5L H4 engine. Nothing fancy just a beater. I bought it with 213,358 miles on it. Now I have 214,000 miles on it. It's a good car. 5 Speed manual transmission. I am trying to fix it up as cheaply as possible and go from there. I am converting the exhaust to a straight pipe and my goal is to just keep the engine light off for five years. I want a WRX wagon or a 2.5L Outback Sport like this. Same car but a couple years newer with less milage! Is it better then a Forester in your opinion?

@@Tinker1837 nice I have a 2000 Legacy Outback with a 5 Speed. Bought it for $2700 at 213,358 miles on it. I have 214,000 miles on it now. So I am going to keep it for five years. I am doing a straight pipe exhaust from the headers back. Going universal cats and mid pipe delete. Other then that It's a fine car. I decided that I am keeping my car for five years at least with the engine light off. So, if I can do that I will be happy. I'm looking at getting a 2003 Outback Sport with the WRX package. What do you think about that? Are these outback sports better then the foresters or would it be cheaper to just eventually buy a "newer" to me Forester with a stick and the XT package? Just wondering- WS
