I can totally relate. I too have been doing KZbin for 10+ years and the time that it takes away from your family really adds up. It's manageable when views are good, but with everything going on with us having to win favor with the KZbin algorithms, it really can make you re-evaluate where you choose to allocate your time. I would love to hear some of your music! I've found that adding the Shorts and Livestreams, both which don't take up as much time as a feature video, helps me manage my overall production time as little easier. Thanks for the update! I'm glad that you are doing well and are happy with how life is going. It would be fun to chat one of these days. It's been a while since our last talk. Take care and all the best! ~Cliff

I agree with you about the time management and questioning if it is worth it to keep making videos in an effort to try to grow the channel. I’ve been seeing view drops for months now, combined with more and more of my videos getting smacked with limited or no ads which kills my circulation. I don’t have that niche in a series that brings me tons of views and subs. I’m going to keep doing what I am doing because I love to share what I do with my subs and viewers but I’m not going to feel disappointed anymore about my channel not growing. If it happens, it happens.

Hey man, without a doubt I relate to everything you said (I think it’s been 8 going on 9 years for us and you’ve been a friend through most of that) it’s disappointing that KZbin turned the algorithm against us (many of us are facing the same burnout feelings)...I really don’t believe you lost the core of your audience. I think most folks like me would watch you do whatever you want to do because you’re a good, interesting and entertaining person...keep doing whatever you want, enjoy your beautiful family, we’re here and I’m looking forward to the next time I see you in the real word...✌🏾❤️🙏🏽

Thanks for the update, man! There's quite a few "tactical" channels I subscribe to. Most of 'em, I don't really care if they post anything or not, and only really watch a small percentage of their vids. Their gear reviews get pretty stale. But your channel, I always try to watch each video for at least a few minutes. Yes, your content is always informative. But mostly what makes me follow your channel is that you really seem like a good, genuine, sincere person. One with solid values. And we all need the occasional positive reminder that there's still good, real, kind, intelligent, hopeful people in the world. Thanks for that! If you decide to make any vids down the road, seriously consider taking the approach of sharing basic "life advice," experiences, philosophy, deeper perspectives on things, virtues to live by, outdoor/hiking/camping tips, etc. Perhaps even going in a spiritual direction, if you wish. I could see you really shining in that sort of angle. Just simple yet powerful "life tactics." Cheers :)

I agree family is the #1 priority. I think a lot of us who started watching youtube gun and gear reviews since 2010 got "tactical fatigue." We bought a lot guns and multicam and realized that buying more "stuff" doesn't make our lives any better and the zombie apocalypse isn't going to happen. Enjoy your time with your family !

You were a beast at SHOT show. 10 to 20 uploads a day! Those were the days bro. I am basically in the same boat. I moved away from Vegas in 2019 and that was the start of me just doing what ever interested me. If 30 days went by....oh well. I got into ATVs then SXS's up here in the Reno Tahoe Carson area and really enjoyed being away and not feeding the social media beast every week. I basically killed my channels ad revenue haha. I then shot myself in the foot by deleting all my gun videos (thinking I was saving my channel) DONT DO THAT. Just leave them unlisted or private. I accidentally got into ebikes. I posted a toally horribly reviewed Walmart junk ebike video and it went to 1 million views some how. (this was 2020) I am not a gun channel anymore, I am not an overlander even though I do those videos, I am not an ebike channel, nobody watches my SXS videos....I have no idea what I am doing now but time with my wife and kids is amazing. I started a family channel more like a diary/vlog. No editing just a dad filming his family and its been so much fun. I have no desire to build it into a business. I just want to be able to look back at our trips and experiences and say to my kids....remember this hike or this road trip? Or what if I die? At least they will have a large library to look back on where dad is actually with them in the videos. It has zero subs and I dont care. Its fun having the library of trips on camera. Im glad you changed gears and put your time back into your family. Us OG youtubers all probably need to make changes after 10 years of youtube. I'd like to see a video from you talking about the pros and cons of living in Utah. I did a video about Reno....and it got almost 300k views not that I cared...but people genuinely want to know what life is like in other states. Have fun! Enjoy life!!!!

What a great explanation of what is involved and time consuming work it takes to do what you have go through to put out a video, i don't think most of us realize what a job it is to produce videos. I totally get it. I had an audio only entertainment podcast for 13 years. It was moderately popular-I used to joke that we had dozens of fans… all over the world. It was a lot of fun and I loved it, but after 13 years it started to feel like a thankless job. My life is different than it was when I first began the show with my best friend in 2006. I became a mom in that time, and also started a business. We made a bunch of friends through the podcast, and I am glad we started it, but our real-life family and friends always should come first. Being stressed out about the record/release schedule, always having to come up with fresh ideas, and all the editing time it takes to make quality content is not worth the aggravation. So, good for you! Thank you for the library of videos! I just discovered your channel and will watch them all. My husband and I particularly enjoyed your Subaru vid, and learned a lot from it. We have a similar life style and are looking to buy a 2013 Subaru. Anyway, enjoy your time with your family and remember, time is a resource you can never get back. Only put out a video when you feel like it and ONLY if it's fun. Merry Christmas and God bless!

The struggle is real. I always say as long as people keep watching I will keep making videos. When times are good it's easy. However, once things go bad they get really bad, and things get harder and harder to keep things going. Each view is a person and I always want to do my best to show up for those people but the time and energy it takes to think, make, edit, and upload is way more than people realize.

Glad to see you again, Shane. I think it's great to have KZbin as a way to make a little extra money from what I would be doing anyway. When I've worried so much about videos I'm making that it robs me of the enjoyment of what I'm doing- I try and cut back. I hope I never get to where KZbin feels like a job. Those who don't make videos don't understand the time it takes to edit, and I think you're making a good decision by keeping KZbin on the back-burner. Enjoy your hobbies first, if you can make some money and friends on KZbin here and there, that's just an added bonus.

I have always liked your channel, and even watched your motorcycle riding in the mountains (pretty views for a Midwesterner to see). Whatever you want to do is the right thing for you. God speed and don’t feel like you have to do anything for us. You don’t owe us anything. I will stay subscribed. Shucks, if you don’t put out videos, it won’t clog up my subscription list anyway, so no worries. Post when you feel like it.

Thanks for the update, similar situation for me, though one was a reverse reason - much of my motivation was doing stuff with my son, Logan (Beachhead). When he went to college, it wasn't as much fun doing stuff on my own. Add in a 3 year peak in professional responsibilities, followed by a year or so of catching up on things that went to the back burner as a result, plus the Adpocalypse, it was easier to not create content. I've gotten a motorcycle, and expanded my woodworking, but it's been simpler to just enjoy those without setting up cameras and then editing.

There is a difference between old school KZbinrs like us and the new school all they do is make videos KZbinrs. It was a side deal for us and for most now it is their main gig. I totally get it.

Missed your videos. Just finished watching your video on the PM 2 knife you made 9 years ago, then stumbled on this video. Take care and keep the reviews coming brother!

Hi Matt, I have been subbed to you for about 7 years and I do understand exactly where you are coming from. Burn out. I just experienced it on my job of 14 years and on Monday I start with a new company and with a slight paycut. I had to get out because my health and sanity is far more important. I also play bass and music is one of my huge hobbies, aside guns and motorcycles. You and I have a lot in common. Anyhow, if you put up any of your original music I will be sure to check it out since I follow you on Facebook and Instragram as well. I will miss your videos but I back what you are doing as self and family come first over entertaining random strangers on the internet. Best wishes with all your new choices. Patrick

Take care of your family man, that's more important than doing videos! I hope that everything is good with you to the point that you can do a video occasionally. I'm still waiting on a collaboration with DocTacDad. I think seeing the two of you together would be awesome. But if you don't I understand that too!

Everyone needs a break. Your videos on the Dickinson Commando helped me make a great choice in a shotgun. Thank you for being here for that.

2020 seems to be the year a lot of people stop talking about stuff and started doing it. Glad you're still in good health. Keep it real homie, God bless.

Back to roots man :) You started TLBS to share your passions. Whether you're on KZbin or not, it's important to get that fire back 😎 Much love from the Philippines

Hey brother. I am very happy for you. KZbin won’t pay the bills as you once told me especially since they demonitize anything with word guns or ammo. I am actually finding myself upset with the Tube and the lack of support and being against my passion. I see half naked women with commercials but I can’t get ads talking about ammo shortage. I am eventually going to change my channel over to something else if I get there. Nice to hear from you and thx for update.

I always liked your videos, you have a very “watchable” style. Also like that you included your family in several of the shooting videos, something that I hope to get my children into when they’re older. I wish you all the best and thanks for what you’ve done to help the gun community on KZbin.

Typing this before finishing the video, but at the beginning, I had an idea where you were heading, and all I can say is “Good on you, brother.” Family first and always. Nothing is as important.
People said this experiment was impossible, so I tried it
