Gracie Wisdom: "Everyone complains about the shape the world is in. I think round is just fine!"

There is something about her voice and the way she delivers a line - you really want to believe every word!

This was one of the "double routines" George & Gracie were famous for performing in vaudeville [with new material written especially for TV, when she often talked about one of her relatives], which they performed after the end of an episode, from 1955 through '58. This one appeared around October 1956 ("right close to election time"- that is, the '56 Presidential election; George doesn't mention WHICH election, as the filmed episodes were supposed to be "timeless" in future syndication).

Makes you wonder how George was able to keep his sanity around Gracie.

Actually, this was first seen in October 1957, as they appeared before a curtain that listed the names of several of the theaters they performed at during their vaudeville days {"Palace Theatre, New York", "Shea's, Buffalo", "Majestic, Chicago", "Hennepin Theatre, Minneapolis", etc.}, in their final TV season.

Did you know that Gracie was originally supposed to be the straight woman? The married team is amazing! One of my favorites. The duo first teamed up in 1923 following the break up of George’s partnership with straight man Billy Lorraine. Burns later recalled… “ they laughed when she asked the questions and didn’t laugh when I gave the punchline, so I gave her all the jokes.”

I do recall something to that affect. Thanks for the reminder. 😊

@@alanhillberg I remember reading in the book Gracie-A Love Story where George mentioned that Gracie's straight answers were generating more laughs than his punchlines, so he simply reversed the act to make himself the straight man, and her the comedian.

@@kevinmiller6380 And bonus points for George indeed being a great straight man. He has a real air of quiet patience and dry wit that helps balance Gracie's bubbleheaded routine. Complete with the occasional small glances and grins to the audience as if to say "I don't know where she's going with this either but it'll be fun to find out." Really helps set up and sell her punchlines better.

George and Gracie worked precisely because George was the perfect Straight Man for Gracie If you're not familar with the term, in doubles comedy, the "Straight Man" is the one who sets up the joke. Abbot in "Who's on First" is probably the most well-known example, pretty much anything with Bert and Ernie is a textbook case. Shayne Topp of Smosh is a more modern example, especially when opposite Courtney Miller and/or Olivia Sui of the same. But I don't think anyone really comes close to the sheer verve Gracie Allen put into her work.

Ummm.., I’m 67 years old and have been watching comedy before I even comprehended what I was watching, so I have a good grasp on what a straight man is, but for those comedically challenged I’m sure it helped. 😊😊

@@alanhillberg It's not a term that's really used any more either. First and last time I saw it was in the pages of Buck Godot Zap Gun For Hire comic and that was published in the 80's. But yes, I wanted to define it for anyone who didn't know the term.

Is there any reason Gracie is never shown in a one shot. All you see is George's silly expression after her lines.
@Mxyzptlksac4 жыл бұрын
alg11297 a lot of her humor was strengthened by George’s response, as the straight man that’s his job. Set it up, she delivered the joke and he’d respond- he needed to be in the shot because he had a lot of physical responses, faces, looks etc... it’s from his vaudeville days.
@Run.Ran.Run14 жыл бұрын
@@Mxyzptlksac Exactly, and if they didn't do that, no one would ever take their eyes off of Gracie. He always attributed their success to her genius.
