In this series, the reason why Hood beats this MMA "champ" is because it was outside the ring. Figuratively and actually. The "champ" clearly was more skilled in the techniques of fighting mixed martial arts but the second it went outside the ring, he was done. Hood was in prison and learned all the dirty tricks to win fights. That's why he won. He doesn't play by any rules. Good video!

This was such a great show. The story is that the main character gets out of prison, stops at a bar where the new sheriff for the town of Banshee stops on his way to take over the position. The real sheriff (Hood) gets killed in a bar fight with a couple of thugs at said bar. The recently released convict takes over his identity and becomes the sheriff in his place. He continues to do criminal stuff while being a lawman in his own way. You never even find out what the guys name actually is. Its really good.

This is one of the reasons, when people ask me if I teach self-defence, I say 'No, I teach Muay Thai and Brazilian JiuJitsu', because the second you add in rules, it becomes a sport; it's no longer like a self-defence. The guys who train definitely have a better chance of looking after themselves, but you don't train to have your ear bitten off."_ That's the simplest and clearest explanation I've ever heard for the differences between training in a fighting style and self-defence.

Yes it is. I always tend to say that every martial art is brilliant for what it was created for. Take BJJ for example - it is brilliant for a 'duel' type of situation. On the street, however, it strikes me as a very bad idea to take the fight to the ground - chances are, your opponent has mates close by waiting for a chance to kick your head through the pavement. Again - every style is great for the problem it intends to provide an answer, but no style is unbeatable, and no person is unbeatable.

An additional layer to this fight, the lead (the sheriff, we never learn his real name, he's under an assumed identity) is having very blatant flashbacks to when he was beat up and threatened with sexual assault in prison by a huge formidable man. The victim in this episode is someone he personally identifies with, having experienced similar trauma to her. So he does this big difficult fight, all while dealing with his own trauma, he's dealing with physical and mental strain.

The thing about Hood in this series is that most fights he gets in, he seems in way over his head. Like in this fight, he usually has to take a lot, before he can turn things around by getting dirty. Aren't you going to point out how unreaslistic is a person taking all the massive hits that Hood takes like nothing? Aren't you going to point out how stupid that flying guard was? Aren't you goint to point out that bitting on a bottom position is probably one of the worse thing you could do?

I've been bitten twice in fights; it is staggeringly, astoundingly painful. You'll do anything to away from it. You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

One of the girls the mma fighter put in the hospital was a friend of the sherriffs, also footnote on the series the sherriff is an imposter the real Sherriff was killed in a armed robbery and a recently release prison con switched ids with him, the town had hired a new sherriff sight unseen so they dont know about the id switch.

There is a massive difference between martial arts and self-defense. Out in the street, there are no rules, no mat, no referees. More often, weapons and multiple attackers are involved. Anything goes.

I think this fight is brutally realistic except for bite escape....What's gonna happen is *gets caught in arm bar ( deep too ), opponent bites to cause pain distraction, guy performing arm bar screams in great pain and snaps arm either on purpose or out of bucking backwards trying to maintain the hold; snaps the arm. Since Damien has more training he now is able to beat the absolute shit out of Hood, who is fighting the pain of a broken arm ( at the joint no less ) and trying to defend himself

I'm an old-school Karate guy, makiwara and body conditioning and all, and people don't really appreciate how much punishment a tough man can take and still be dangerous...We used to do full contact with no pads 'cept a cup back in the 70s and the only rules were, well, pretty much what the sheriff did in that video weren't allowed. Maan, you'd hurt for a week even WINNING a match like that!

I remember when this came out, all MMA nerds were bitching about Hood biting him to get out of hold. This is a street fight, not an octagon. What was he supposed to do, sit there an wait to get his arm broken? Lol Bruce Lee even said, biting is great in close quarter combat. But if you go in ready to bite, it's a good way to lose your teeth.

This makes me want to see the show now. That was epic. He took all the rules away and went into a street fight.☺️😂😂😂 Great commentary. In real life after getting bit twice and kicked in the nuts that would have been done.😄

In case noone else has mentioned it, from memory the fight isn't over at this point & Hood goes on to snap every finger to make sure Sanchez can't assault anybody else. He emded up crying & I had to watch it through my fingers.

The brief flashbacks in this scene are from when the Sheriff was in prison, he got absolutely whaled by a big guy like the fighter here. In the show he's quite traumatized by those events and that's why he goes straight to dirty fighting in this scene.

Excellent point concerning sport v.s. street. It's why when anyone asks me about learning "self defense" I tell them that's a great term that martial arts schools use so they don't sound like psychopaths, but in reality, in the real world, if you don't practice "self offense" you may wind up being a statistic. It comes down to mentality - whenever I have trained anyone, one of my first tenets is you can go green when you are in your home. The second before you open the door to go outside, you switch to yellow alert level. You stay there as you move through the outside world. You never stare at your shoes as you walk, and HELL NO not your damn cell phone. Be alert and aware in every circumstance, and most cowards who may consider you a target, will quickly move on to the next because they perceive awareness and strength. This is especially true for women. When I've trained women, I've taught them the swiftest and most brutal ways to destroy an attacker. This cinematic clip is great entertainment (it really is a great program - I enjoyed it), but it is completely unrealistic that nobody else jumped in on either side. In the real world, remember, if there is 1, there is 2. If there is 2, there is 3 and so on. You may not see them at first, but always expect cowards to move in packs and employ predatory tactics to flank and corner (and attack you from behind). They are bold in numbers, and nearly always draw strength from one figure they consider the alpha. These days, I prefer teaching people how to shoot. 🙂

I love BBJ. When the MMA fighter got the guy in a triangle: I'm yelling at the TV..."GET YOUR LEGS UNDER YOU AND POSTURE UP." I think that might be the first time I've ever seen someone get out of a triangle like that, on a show.

Maybe the best fight I ever saw in a tv show. Not unlike my favorite movie sword fight ever, the Rob Roy showdown fight. Hopelessly outmatched underdog disregards all the rules to turn the fight around, while the dumbfounded 'champion' is left thinking "hey, he can't do that".

I have become sick & tired of watching violence. But, Banshee you cannot take seriously. The amount of punishment, as stated, is insane and no one could handle that. But, their style and technique is over the top and that makes me chuckle.
