Burroughs Mountain Trail - Mount Rainier National Park 4K

‘The Mountain against a Mountain’ is the coined term for this incredible hike 🏔 It has one of the most dramatic views of the northeastern face of the massive volcano.
📍 Burroughs Mountain sets right up against Mount Rainier, hugging the Winthrop Glacier. Not only broad open views that end with looking directly down onto the crags and cracks on the glacier! 😍 But a mass of wildlife galore. Elk, deer, marmots, foxes and all kind of birds and critters.
✨ If you can only do one hike to experience this National Park.. I’d say this should be one of your top choices!
There are actually 3 Burroughs on this hike. With the third being the most rewarding but also the most work for that reward.
🗺 9.5 miles round trip with 1345 elevation gain to the second Burrough & adding an additional 1155 feet if you push on to the third. (And believe me.. a lot of people stop at the second. But you WANT TO go all the way to the third. Because that’s where you get those up-close glacier views!)
🎟 Passes include either an America the Beautiful National park pass or a 7 day pass for $30

I did last did this in October 2021 and it was a great hike. Wind from the east blew up the valley and formed a heavy fog at the third Burroughs. I never get tired of going to Mt Rainier because it is so different every time. Great video

Elevation of Third Burroughs is 7828'. Elevation of Second Burroughs is 7400'. Elevation of Sunrise Visitor Center is 6400'. You do have to descend from Second Burroughs and then go up to Third Burroughs and of course reverse that on the way back so that adds many feet of elevation gain.

Amazing! I actually thought this would have been more than 2,500 ft. That is still a climb to be sure, but imagined more :)

Thank you so much! Yes you are correct. All total if you go to the third Burrough it is around 2500. The first two are a total of 1100 and then moving on to the third adds another 1500 :)

Oh it really depends on what the weather decides to do. Generally the sunrise area of mount rainier is open through September :)
