Nice review Tarun and great to see you have a go at this brand. Two comments. Firstly, I have a Musical Fidelity A3.2 CD player which I recapped with Elna Silmic II electrolytics. That was an improvement over standard, however, it was nothing compared to the jump in performance of fitting 4 V6 Vivid opamps. The level of detail pulled of standard CDs is now mind blowing and one way this manifests itself is in the texture of vocals and acoustic instruments that simply wasn’t there before. My wife, who does no active listening, stopped reading her book and asked what I’d done to the system! Many people will say that buying 4 opamps at £75 each represents diminishing returns compared with chips at £3 each but not me. Total revelation. Secondly, and more briefly, it’s time to buy some headphones! I did earlier this year, after hearing my mate’s Audeze LCD-Xs. Couldn’t afford those but went for the Hi-Fi Man Sundara. Also planar magnetic and absolutely brilliant. I’m powering them with the ifi Zen Dac Signature plus Zen Can Signature combo with separate linear power supply. All in all, a head-fi setup to challenge my reference speaker system.

High efficiency speakers have been my thing this year. Raising the efficiency is like removing weight in a race car. I bought the Heresy IVs and haven’t looked back. Also have the Sound artist LS35a. ( wonderful) . Also Focals and others laying around here.

Excellent review as usual, underlying the strength and limitations of the power supply. I think it is important to keep in mind that Burson are probably most famous for their state of the art headphone amplifiers. No doubt this is a big part of the value proposition of this unit.

@@abritishaudiophile7314 No one asked, but if you want a couple suggestions for reasonably priced headphones to pay with, I'd suggest Meze 99 Classic for a nice closed back dynamic driver phone and the Hifiman Sundara for an open back planar. Drop 6xx is another classic. If you want to step up, Audeze makes some great planars These are all highly regarded and reviewed, so this isn't exactly insider information, hah! I like both my Sundaras and Audeze. The Classic 99 didn't quite fit my melon.

Good evening tarun, very nice piece of kit, looks very well designed and built, you mentioned headphone use, and perhaps doing some testing of headphone outputs etc, I'm a big headphone user 90% of my listening is with headphones because I have other residents living close by, the burson seems like a good versatile piece of kit especially for smaller room I've always enjoyed a all in one system over the years, if hifi separates are not feasible. Looking forward to seeing another review soon tarun.

Always a good watch, many thanks. Its clearly a decent product which is likely to be very good with headphones, but that definately means its not for me, as im not keen on headphone listening! I do sometimes have to mix on headphones, but even then, i have to use dsp to get a proper accoustic space to mix into, or yiu end upwith dreadful 'mixed in cans' sound that marks out so many bedroon producers. As per usual your technical insight and your coverage of interesting engineering solutions is a real usp for you and your channel, and keeps me coming back time after time, despite not wishing to upgrade any further! Keep it coming! Love your work.

Tarun…LOVE the "Men at Work" reference at the beginning. GREAT Lyrics. A bit of Trivia: There is a PBS documentary out there about New York's Central Park. Pretty interesting piece…and in one small segment the camera stops to pause on a "street band" as the narrator waxes about how musicians and performers come to The Park to show-off their wares.. To my delight…that un-named street band was "Men at Work"!!! 🙂 They must have just landed in The States and we’re an unknown entity ready to burst forth…not sure what year that would have been? Pretty cool.

Nice review and interesting design. You made me look at their product range and they turn out to have these 80 Wpc stereo amps that can be bridged into 230W mono blocks. Or bi-amped to give separate damping to separate drivers ... (in order to drive the debate of horizontal versus vertical bi-amping :) )

Brill -thank you! 👍 I find myself at a bit of a crossroad, I'm returning back to my CD collection as I find I can extract more from that source. Premium version of Spotify fails to deliver and I don't think I'm prepared to pay for Tidal. Artists get very little money from these sources and yet make a great deal themselves. I'm a Mac user and again not sure what hi def Apple will offer. I do use headphones and a iFi DAC, as now I'm retired I have to share the listening room with my wife. Nothing wrong with that but I like to get absorbed into my music, a great way to relax.

Another great review it is my impression that digital amplifiers and i am not commenting on the SQ do not deliver the claimed power output the way a classic AB amplifiers do . I know that a Watt is a Watt but there is something that i have noticed when auditioning digital amplifiers is that the may say 100w per channel but the sound under powered . I am talking about serious designs like Devialet, Belcanto etc . I am not technical proficient to understand why but i believe in order to have full body sound and grip you need 200+w in digital amplification .

Tarun, a remarkably informative review of a fascinating device. I love tinkering with my desktop setup. Although I love the set-up I've got, it would be fascinating if you could give me a couple of examples of speakers you would chose for the desktop environment used in conjunction with this unit. Most desktop speakers are powered. Would using powered speakers negate the stability of the timekeeper's sophisticated power supplies? I actually don't know whether powered speakers would be entirely inconsistent with the use of the timekeeper. Many thanks.

Hi Michael. Very kind of you to say. II think the smaller Amphion speakers would be a great desktop partner. Something like the Amphion Argon 0. My PSB Imagine Minis also worked great, although I didn’t mention that in the review. The PSB Imagine Minis are no longer available but I bet the Revel M105 will be a suitable replacement. As for using with powered speakers? The Burson Conductor 3 is similar to the Timekeeper 3i but without the power amp section which you won’t need with powered speakers. It is a more cost effective solution 😊👍

I'm considering buying this Burson timekeeper but I want to make sure they are a good fit with my Audio Physics Yara (4ohm 20-120W) floor standing speakers. Would the Timekeeper have enough power to drive them well? Or do have a better recommendation I should consider

The DAC probably sounds better than those in other Integrated amps as Burson are more of a DAC/Pre component manufacturer primarily. Think of this as their DAC/Headphone amp with an added power amp section.

Hi Tarun, this amp is mainly a headphone amplifier, the integrate is only a second option, so it should sound amazing as a headphone amp , and the amp is best used as nearfield listening. But still for this price it is not cheap as you said it should has a better all round performance. I really don't know it is from down under, can you tell me is it made in Australia or PRC, if PRC I will be very disappointed. Thanks you anyway and your review is highly regarded.

Did you use this feature too? The TK-3i features two speaker output levels. One for power-hungry full-range speakers. One for near-field monitoring, which requires an even lower noise floor and much finer volume control.

It may struggle to drive the LS50 Metas in a room setup but will probably not be that noticeable at the end of a desk. The DALI Menuet SEs may be another consideration 😊

I’m more picky when it comes to digital equipment. There are always some brands that shine in this domain. In their price point,Burson is a brand that puts out for their price point. Their designs are good for the money. They are well worth a listen for their price point as they are reasonable compared to many. It won’t satisfy some, but their gear has been well represented in the past. Your ears are the ones that make this decision. A fair trial is warranted. For their price point, good! Stay safe mates!😊👍🏻😷

Hey Tarun , sorry mate I have a question 🙋‍♂️ I m planning to buy Chord Qutest after brief listening abs Pontus is bit out of budget at the mo now instead of running from my iMac 🖥 with Roon I want to try it with a dedicated CD Transport is it worth upgrade over my Arcam alpha 7Se and Arcam Solo integrated all in one unit ?? I have Audiolab 6000 CDT and Cambridge CXC v2 in mind .. my set up is going to be CD transport to Qutest to my Focal Arche Headphone Dac/Amp which has already a good AK4490 dac chip sounds good , your advise will save my spending on Transport as I take it seriously.. and which digital out is better coax or optical ?? Hi Atri, there was a distinct improvement in sound quality when I recently compared my Toshiba notebook to my Auralic Aries Mini as a transport feeding the Denafrips Pontus II DAC. I haven’t tried any other transports at home as yet so can’t say what will be better than your Arcam Alpha 7SE. There are plus and minuses to both optical and coaxial connections. Optical provides isolation from noise but the conversion process itself can introduce noise if poorly implemented. Unfortunately, there is not a straightforward answer. I would see if you can get a dealer to loan you one and see what works best 😊👍

You need urgently an audio EE rewieving your video regarding technical inside description and the technical statements you´re giving! The oscillators are on the XMOS board. You can´t see the ESS9038! And so on... and what´s about the amplifier part? BTW, very nice built but nothing really new for that price.

All of those surface mount electrolytics worry the heck out of me, I can count more than 80! I had a £600 and amplifier that was only 10 years old, and all of those similar surface mount caps had failed, leaking and expired, the same with my DCC recorders, cute amp, but no, not for me. Great review though as always :)

I think that you should get some headphones because the headphone section is another indicator of how much effort that the manufacturer has put into the amp.

Enjoyed and appreciated your review very much and especially your take on the internals and layout. I know Burson is meticulous about their components, like the poweramps. Still, I have mixed feelings (perhaps a little bit disappointed) about this one, based on the specs and prim. nearfield use. I get it though, can't have it all at once ;)

Hi Tarun, How is the internal DAC compared to Audiolab 6000A? Was planning to get Audiolab 6000A to connect to my Castle Knight 2 speakers. Budget is a constraint hence going for all in one integrated solution. Is the 6000A DAC better than entry level DACs? How does it compare to Hegel H90/95 DAC? Thanks.

The internal ESS Sabre DAC based around the 9018 chip is very well implemented. You will probably need to spend over £500 on an external DAC to do much better 😊

Amrut has been the premium Indian malt whiskey. It has won a bunch of international awards. There are a couple of other good ones now too I believe. My dad is a malt whiskey connoisseur. Concerning the Burson's power supply converter section, is it similar to a class D integrated amplifier's power supply section, (ie, SMPS?)

Hi Elliot, it has a regular SMPS and then according to Burson they regenerate it and do some noise shaping in their proprietary MCPS (Max Current Power Supply) 😊

From the reviews I listened to, the amplifier's strength is in driving headphones while still performing decently with speakers. So the experience should be better with headphones. BTW, Amphion Helium 510 review anytime soon? Cheers.

I would expect it to be very much at home with headphones. The schedule is pretty packed for a while but I would still like to review the Helium 510 and do an AB with the Argon 1 😊

@BritishAudiophile Did you notice that the lowest volume setting=1 on low gain mode is not really that low ? Too loud for passive listening while working etc. Unfortunate.... potentially a deal breaker.

Yes 4A is way too low. 2 things I look for high current delivery of at least 9A continuous and 16A peak plus a damping factor of around 2000 or above. For grunt, attack and control.
