On January 14, 2020, the right engine of the Boeing 777-200ER operating Delta Air Lines Flight 89 suffered a number of compressor stalls and burst into flames just after takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); while returning to the origin airport for an emergency landing, the flight crew dumped fuel over populated areas adjacent to the city of Los Angeles. Find out what really happened.

A one time exposure while unpleasant, doesn't have a long lasting physical or neurological effects. Nonetheless, the pilots should have been more mindful especially if it wasn't an absolute emergency. My reasoning for their dump over population would be that they didn't want to take a chance of going out over water, just in case it became a sudden emergency.

@oldmech619
@oldmech619 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, when planes do land overweight, they tend to overheat their brakes. They taxi off the active and set their brakes which causes the wheels to over heat, that cause a fuse to melt and that causes flat tires. And when the airplane looses more than one tire per axil, you have to get a special Rhino jack which is hard to find. And you are working on a taxiway to change all those flat tires, and you may not have enough wheels in stock and you have to go borrow wheels from other carriers. Yep, been there.

Love how people are actually defending the pilots here for dumping fuel wherever. As a pilot myself, I fail to see any urgent need in this situation to dump fuel at low altitudes above LA. ATC even asked if they need to dump fuel while over the water and the pilots declined. They never told ATC they were dumping fuel to begin with. Engine had a compressor stall, although serious, not serious enough to wait until final to dump fuel.

Exactly, they were impatient, which a lot of you guys like to do that. Shut number 2 down, go into a pattern over the ocean, and make an upwind final, no need for a downwind landing. What is it, another 20 minutes. A triple 7 should have no problems on 1 engine and they'll move around whoever to get you into rotation when you're ready. A lot of poor decisions. If it isn't an emergency to not have a reliable engine what is an emergency? The pilots first responsibilities are the lives of the passengers. If my flight lost an engine the situation could get worse. I just want the passengers on the ground safely as soon as possible before something else breaks.
@thebanksfilms4426
@thebanksfilms4426 2 жыл бұрын
@@jcraigshelton why are you so upset? I wasn’t there but there is plenty of facts on this. They dumped fuel without advising ATC and even telling them they didn’t need to dump fuel. So they dumped fuel at a very low altitude causing injuries. If they felt the need to dump fuel, that’s understandable, however not advising ATC and then dump fuel on schools is a poor decision made by the PIC.

As a retired ATC ( and ATC tower supervisor), I always hated it when 'secrets' (fuel dump, etc.) where being withheld from me. They could have easily dumped that fuel at 8000 feet, but rather chose to spray it all over LA county at a low altitude. I only wonder what else they were keeping from ATC, as it all sounds a bit suspicious to me. Even if the flight crew hadn't requested equipment at the runway, I would have made the call (and did many times) to get it out there. If there are any former or current ATC's out there, you all know that if your gut say something ain't right, it probably ain't right.

Hack Fabrication I’m not ATC, but have been talking to y’all for over 50 years. I am a multi engine instrument rated commercial pilot with several ratings and an A&P., Air Forced trained beginning in 1968. I too think something else was happening and caused the urgency to step up a few notches on top of the engine shut down. It took 10 days to get the aircraft back in service. An engine change can be done in one day. An FAA report I read said they found metal in the back of the engine so I’m pretty sure it was changed. The tone in the voice of who ever was talking to ATC, I figure it was mostly the copilot, changed after the engine shut down. I have not been able to find a final report on the FAA’s or the NTSB’s web site. The report I did read was from 3 days after the event and said they would take a few weeks to complete the investigation. That report was a response to three congresswomen from CA who wrote a letter asking a lot of questions.

I actually live in that area and was around when that happened. I was walking around the area heading to do errands and felt like a weird liquid and I thought it was water till its smell. I ran undercover of a tree in the area scared of what it was and it wasn’t until later when I learned that it was jet fuel and that we were sprayed under. The school most affected in the area was Park Elementary who had kids outside. The kids got medical attention. Delta gave some medical help for those affected for some weeks but our community was angry during our town meeting about the incident. The fact that the pilots lied and dropped fuel on our community makes me pissed at the fact that they decided to drop dangerous liquids like if there wasn’t a community under where they dropped it.

I used to work for a very large company that did maintenance and repairs on just about every commercial plane out there, if people saw some of the things they did to cut corners it would scare the shit out of them every time they stepped on a plane. That was yrs ago, I hope it's better now. Anyway, I love these videos, it's a really great job putting them together this way. It must be a alot of work.
@richsimon7838

It’s no different now. Every business in the world cuts corners because they are relying on humans to do things right every time. While unlikely that a major airline would direct that corners be cut, some of the people that do the work will always cut corners for a myriad of reasons. The tech is tired, lazy, disgruntled, incompetent, incorrectly trained, not feeling well, thinks they know a better way, doesn’t have the exact part needed, and on and on with reasons why. It happens every day in every industry, and the only reason most of these screw ups don’t result in catastrophes is because most industries are not working on life and death issues, and when they are it usually requires a series of events to come together to result in a disaster, not just one singular cause.

I watched these videos all day yesterday, all last night until the wee hours of the morning, and after waking up this morning, I started watching again, into the afternoon today. These are so well put together. I love that you use Flight Simulator to give us a feel of things going on. You don't narrate - instead you allow us to become immersed in the drama. You include talk between the controllers and the flight crew. You include the information about date, time, location, flight duration, age of plane, captain and f/o. You include details about the investigation results, and you inform us how many died. Then, you add in that beautiful music - I never tire of hearing it. I don't subscribe to many channels - I literally have 10 subscriptions, and I've been on KZbin since 2006. This is one of my favorite channels now, and is on my subscribe list. Amazing work!

Yes for the flames on your logo👏👏👏👏 I love it!! TFC..... I can't express enough how much I appreciate how you've grown throughout the years. I joined TFC during S2, and your skills and talents is truly remarkable!! Thank you for providing such amazing quality of work on each and every video!! It's a blessing that everyone survived!! I'm not too happy about the ones on the ground who were effected by the crew dumping fuel over populated area, but at least there were no fatalities. When I saw Delta, I was holding my breathe because I only fly with them. Glad everyone survived!!

Why didn't they dump fuel immediately when they were over the ocean ? The pilots sound like they don't know what to do, or they are distracted. This doesn't sound like a normal problem they have trained for. They are not answering ATC Something is going on in the cockpit that is taking their attention With the engine off they should have control over the situation and not be so distracted.

As a NON-Pilot I'm just glad they landed safely. I am amazed with aviation, and know every flight is the result of years of training and skills and expertise of pilots and crew. AND, the Blessing and Grace of God Almighty. I pray the kids all recover fully. God Bless Everyone ‼️🙏💙❤️

This is insane, my family has been living across the river from LaGuardia Airport in NYC for about 50 years, its aviation space at very low altitudes and we have neverrr experienced anything like this. Fuel dumping over land? Nuts

What I vividly remember from this emergency landing was that moment you mentioned at 11:54, I saw a video of it on Twitter. Pretty sure a lot of kids got sick from that, really upsetting.

@@moderndissident5930 They were over water and high enough for the fuel to not reach the ground, but chose to dump fuel only after they were low and over land where they would drench whoever is below them. That's not what they 'had to do'.

The ATC was probably thinking, "You did say you are flying heavy right? And you don't need to dump fuel?" I've watched enough videos on the channel to know when flying heavy, you can not land properly with all that fuel.

Thanks for this video, I've always wondered what would happen if fuel was dumped over inhabited land instead of the sea, as they usually do in your videos. This flight crew deserves a heavy penalty for endangering public health so recklessly!!

Did they get it? Seems appropriate to suspend the flight crew's licenses, for, oh, 3 months or so, and fine Delta about 6 figures.
