Burt's Balls

A timelapse of some cypress hedge pruning Nov 2017. Takes me about an hour and a half to do one of these. Gear used was Sthil HLA 65 & 85. GTM Elephants trunk 2. The aluminium platform was home made but I got the pro's to weld it for me. There were 7 of these to do (luckily, a few were a bit smaller) so they kept me busy for the day. Shot on the iphone SE.

How many years has this cypress been trimmed like this? How often is it trimmed per year? Does this ever require pruning from the inside or is it just hedged trimmed year after year? It’s just pretty amazing how big and well rounded the cypress looks. I see other people hedge trim plants and they all look very woody. Almost as if it’s been hedged too much or for too long without new growth. I don’t understand how this plant is so well maintained and kept very healthy looking.

It gets a trim twice a year. If you let it go for a few years, it would be a struggle, if not impossible, to get it back into shape.

Looked fun and I learnt a couple of good tips. Thinking of getting either the ELH or Elephant like you're using. Would you ever use the Elephant up a ladder?

Cheers AlbinoBoy. Yes, I often use the ET on the ladder - but it is an industrial platform step ladder that has a rail at waist height. I wouldn't consider using a non platform step ladder with the ET. I'd like to try the Easy Lift but I don't think there's anyone in my area that I could try one - they look a fair bit taller than the ET which could be a problem. The ET has been a real neck & shoulder saver for me although there's been the odd small problem with stitching coming apart and I can never seem to lock the overhead tube so it won't move slightly side to side. If you get one, be careful if your ladder isn't face on to the hedge as the cable housing on the back has a tendency to catch on the safety rail and push you off the ladder :)

John - outstanding! I’m most curious about that fantastic tree/bush. Is it in the Cyprus family? How old is it? How often does it need to be trimmed? The resemblance to a human head of that thing is uncanny. Watching the video had me thinking of all the fun things one could do with selective trimming and forming a human face with hair. One could really get creative!

Cheers Steve. I think it's a Monterey Cypress - which left untrimmed becomes a large sprawling tree. These get trimmed twice a year (my hedge is the same thing). Not sure on age - probably around 30 or so. My hedge is about 20 and is now nice and solid. You could have a lot of fun making lots of Mr Potato Heads out of them!! I'm doing a big 'grub' (same plants but 100m long) next week at the Tangled Maze and we're going to try to re-do the face on it - I'll try and get some vid.

Cheers DD. It's attached with 1/4" bolts to the ladder. And yes, I usually use the harness so I can lean back a little and not worry about losing my balance. I'm just too cheap to buy a little tower!!!

Yep, untrimmed these are a large, sprawling tree. Trim them twice a year and you can keep them at whatever size and shape you like. You can bonsai them too but that's something I've never gotten into.

It's only like this because it's trimmed back twice a year. If left alone, it will get to 80ft high and just as wide. It's a Monterey Cypress. They're often used as a hedge.
