We had a neighbor growing up who was from Spain and he used to bury crab shells in his garden. Anytime anyone in the neighborhood had a crab feast he would take home all the "trash" and bury it in his garden. His soil was the richest, most productive black gold I've ever seen.

I saw a tv program about how bears catch salmon and deliberately scatter them around the forest. Test showed the salmon ingredients were in all the plants right up to the tree tops. Bears fertilised the forest once they had enough to eat. Amazing!
@at1the1beginning
@at1the1beginning 2 жыл бұрын
Yes because bears are farmers...They DON'T do this intentionally or with any future production in mind; they can't think like that. It's just a matter of eating the tastiest and most nutrituous bits to fatten up fast and leaving the rest when there's an overabundance of fish to catch during salmon migration.
@elizabethtaylor9242

@@at1the1beginning whatever was motivating the bears, they scattered salmon deep into the forest, and the forest benefitted. They caught more than they wanted to eat.

Whenever the guys go fishing it's time to dig a hole in the garden for the inedible fish parts. If there's not an open bed, we freeze them until a space opens up. I had okra so tall and thick one year I could hide behind it. It really does work. That's what the native Americans did. I do have to protect the burial spot from all the cats we have in the neighborhood. I use tomato cages, shelves, racks, and such from appliances that have been discarded.

For the thrifty members of this channel, it is possible to purchase tuna and other fish designed for cat food. You need to read the fine print with regard to additives such as salt etc but in the main, they are far cheaper, particularly if you buy in bulk. Living in the mountain region of Taiwan, I am not able to advise you a particular brand but I am sure with a little detective work, you will find what you are looking for. Keep up the good work Dan. Cheers!

At the price of tuna, I like your sardines version better, pricewise. Didnthat last year, when I planted my last bareroot fruit tree, and the tree did really well. Defrosted and cleaned outnrhe freezer about a month ago, and hubby wanted to toss some old, forgotten lake trout, and I shut him down, telling him that's my fertilizer for this year's bareroot trees! A lot cheaper than buying fish fertilizer! Thanks for reminding us that we have easy, natural alternatives for fertilizing!

An even better way to use fish is to use the fish guts and parts that you have left after cleaning a mess of fish. I also freeze them for later use and I use, "bait fish" that I either didn't use or that died after a long day of fishing. Any, "trash fish" that you catch is great fertilizer too as well as real growth stimulus; my squash and tomatoes thrive on fish cleanings.

Started adding kitchen scraps (and wood chips) when planting when putting them into the large pots we use and dumped them into the compost piles at the end of the season. Found plenty of worms along with the broken-down scraps.

I have heard that before burring anything garden lime over anything you put under a new plant. I was watching other previous videos where you sprinkled something else over roots of plants and in the hole you are placing it in. - Currently I am in a leased house so doing anything in ground is not possible. I am hoping to have my own house and yard soon. So I am tearing apart the large planters that my dad killed off the flowers I have given him. I was surprised when I turned them over and out into a wheelbarrow that he had filled the bottom with plastic plant containers. And in one there were these white squishy and curled bugs. I did not know what they were so I pitched them out with the rest of the roots,, bulbs, and bases for the grass mounds and clover. I do have bags of new soil, but also have some Black Kow to mix a bit with this black soil. (then doing the stack... sticks/branches, dried leaves, newspaper, some items to compost, a bit of cardboard, then a bit of the old dirt { amended with the Black Kow}, and new soil. I am hoping that all that I have watched from a handful of long term gardeners - I am on a small scale but also hope that I am on the right track. Thank you for the videos.. I am still playing catch up to your most recent ones.

Put on a couple of gloves and break it up into small pieces. If you got an old food processor or blender that you don't need any more, put the small chunks into that. No, only tuna or salmon. Tomatoes are picky about their fish.

Go to your local foodfish store or market place and ask fishbones and heads instead of putting good edible and expensive canned fish.

Canned food expiration dates are more a marketing ploy than a health warning. As long as the can is not swollen, the canned food is likely good. Making a tincture of fetid water applied to the soil at planting will do the same as thing as using fish, except it's free. Make fetid water by filling a sealable bin half full of mulch, 5/8 full of water and a lid. Let it rot 3 months.

@@plantabundance because they can smell it. We have an over abundance of strays and raccoons they dug up all my potted plants that I put banana in to feed my plants. ... Well that was the raccoons not the cats but my cats have dug up my plants as well. I can imagine if it were tuna 😜

I never planted it in a mound. I have amended my soil with it months prior to planting. Those pots did way better than the other containers I grew in.

I use a 10 foot cast net and go to a rummage sale and got 10 blenders. I use a machete and chop up all fish and put in blender till slurry and put in holes for plants add 3 inches soon then plant or seed. My watermelons get a half shovel if cow Manuel then 4 inches doll and seed. Watrr in and watch them grow like state fair champs.🏆

Please only do this with spoils and byproducts as Dan stated. I understand using guts discarded fish parts after repairing fish after a catch but to use edible food that has not gone bad that have resources used to produce it and ship, including the pollution created in it’s production, to use this product in this manner is counterproductive to being green, environmentally conscious and overall just bad for society.

I agree with you. I'd go to a coffee shop for coffee grinds. And down to fishing boats when they come in for fish parts. That's helping mother earth. G-D Bless.

So, besides throwing away perfectly edible food (unless past it's sell by date), what's the added benefit of this? You can litterally dump/bury any organic material into a hole to feed adjacent plants...Burying is no better than mulching either (except to dissuade pests) since plants can only take up minerals in solution, which will trickle down into the root zone during decomposition and watering anyway...Plants don't discriminate amongst their nutrient resources either, so in actual fact this is a rather expensive fertellizer pound for pound. Stuff like this is often based upon ancient believes, magic and superstition with no scientific merit to the benefits of it all.

Do I open the can of tuna fish or just bury the can ? Because if I open it then animals will come dig it up a ruin everything , Can I bury some cow manure and chicken manure and rabbit manure instead ? As I believe that they would work better than tuna fish , I ⚡️HIT you Not

Yes cow manure wil help. I use free compost instead and plants like it. There are many techniques you can use, but this is similar to how the native Americans supposedly did it. Self Sufficient Me gardner uses quail manure. I like the idea of tuna but don't want animals to eat it, know my dogs like fish, it would be a mess for me.

You say, "Bury A Can Of Tuna Fish..." We know Tuna is a Fish! Did you grow up in Connecticut? Just say, "Bury A Can Of Tuna..." That's what most people say. I grew up saying it wrong also. Do people say 'Tuna Fish Sushi'? No. Do people say 'Bass Fish'. No. Do they say 'Salmon Fish', 'Mackerel Fish', 'Flounder Fish', or 'Tilapia Fish'? No.

Well when you say tuna more often than not the assumption is you are referring to yellowfin or big eye tuna or a more traditional tuna steak whereas tuna fish typically refers to the canned skipjack or albacore varieties

You should never have a tuna can to begin with, I love Gardner's but humanity needs to stick to gathering from the soil not the sea. the dolphin safe logo is a complete lie that is never been verified, infact the documentary sea spircy points out it's a complete con.
