Bury Me With The Lo On

Watch the documentary about the guys that stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Polo and became an influential subculture.
During the late-’80s, two groups of teenagers from neighboring areas of Brooklyn came together to form a boosting (shoplifting) crew with a common goal- accumulate as much Polo Ralph Lauren as possible, by any means possible.
Known as the Lo Lifes, they dressed themselves in the finest garments stolen from every upper-class department store in the tri-state area, while living a reality that was the complete opposite of what Ralph Lauren represented.
To the authorities the Lo Lifes were criminals, but to themselves and people on the streets, their actions signified something else. They aspired to be something greater, and empowered themselves by taking something that wasn’t meant for them and making it their own.
For the past five years Lo Life founder Thirstin Howl the 3rd and photographer/filmmaker Tom Gould have been documenting this culture. Interviews, archival pictures, and recent portraits of key players make up the first-ever book recounting how a group of kids in Brooklyn went on to influence mainstream rap stars and birth a sub-culture of boosters and collectors of vintage Ralph Lauren worldwide.

I had Lo as well. I wasn’t a LL. I knew heads on St. John’s and Utica that were LL. In 1992. I thought it was Crown Heights only had LL. I knew about Thirstin in 89 but didn’t realize he was from the bills. I never got robbed for any of my Lo, Gucci chains, fronts, anything and I use to take the 3 up to New Lots froM Atlantic after school everyday. I knap w everyone remember all the schools met up on Atlantic Avenue train station around 2:40pm in 92.

Thing people don't understand are the Lo Lives were a Gang of friends out of survival. You needed a gang to survive the late 80s and early 90s in NYC!! It has nothing to do with the Gangs of LA or the Bloods and Crips in NYC today. You couldn't be caught slipping alone in NYC. It was good to run in a group of good homies. NYC Graffiti crews ran the same way too

Yup and those years Lo Lives biggest competitor was Decepts. After that. Was Deceptanettes, Raiders(Biggie Smalls crew), the A-Team, Shower Posse, BMW, V.I.P., The Lost Boyz was notorious in Queens, M.O.B. And a little after it became area versus area. Brownsville versus almost everyone, Ft. Green or Clinton Hill versus Bedstuy or LG. It was really rough back then. You had to roll Deep. The people I was with was either catching wreck at the seaport, Green Acres, or the Coliseum on 168th off Jamaica

That's some wild shit.. they had many of the benefits of a street gang without the violence, drugs, etc.. but you can see how that could also make them targets. Sucks. They really weren't hurting anyone, just big business that has been ripping us off forever, in one way or another. But a feature length project would be awesome. Watched an episode of a crazy ass show called Slobby's World on Netflix and they referenced the Lo Life Crew "mobbing" department stores for anything Polo in the '80s.. I was curious how they did it.. as in if they shoplifted the stuff in the traditional low key sneaky sense or if they just barreled into stores as a big group and snatched shit and ran.. 😁👍👌✌

Ralph Lauren/Polo was doing great sales wise before Lo Lifes began sporting Polo. I’m always hearing this from a lot of Black people about Fila Lacoste. And some of the brands as if these brands was struggling before urban, Black people began sporting it that’s just untrue. I also remember certain brands not feeling good about their brand being popularized by urban blacks. They simply did not want their brands associated with such. And let’s just, look at this for a second. How could it be helpful for a brand that’s expensive to have a group of people simply stealing all of the stuff they want from that brand, and even though it further popularized the brand amongst millions of other urban, black youths, most of those other urban black youth did not come from wealthy families, so how did they obtain these brands? Many by theft and others I suppose saved up the money through working or whatever to buy one or two items, but it wasn’t as if they were able to have this huge wardrobe of these things by paying for it. I know, so many blacks feel that they have made these brands what they are today because they believe everyone else copies off of black peoples fashion sense. That is not entirely true although the art, there is some truth to it there’s also truth to the fact that there are many whites that, don’t want to buy these brands anymore because they see it as associated with the ghetto, black culture, gangsta, shit, etc. I was born in the mid 60s blue-collar white family definitely not rich. I was a scholarship kid because I was smart and attended an elite private school in New York City, the kids at that school and their parents will wear and Ralph Lauren and Izod Lacoste almost exclusively as the brands of clothing and this is starting in the 70s I remember most of the males had Timberland boots Fila sneakers and warm-up suits because most of the kids played tennis and that was a popular tennis brand. You made an interesting point during the video when you said we had kids growing up where we did started stealing polo, we felt like our parents weren’t given us what we wanted. They may have given us what we needed but not what we wanted. I felt the same way growing up and especially so attending school with filthy, rich kids that had everything. But I realize now that my father provided me with everything I needed. It might not have been the fanciest brands but it was everything I needed. I remember I got caught shoplifting With some buddies of mine out in New Jersey at these malls. I was not 18 I think I was 16 and my father had to come get me. He was furious the first thing he said to me was what the fuck do you need with that shirt that cost $92.50.!!!!??? Lol he couldn’t wrap his head around that shit. He thought that was the most absurd shit in the world.
