I was shocked about how good this one is and how everything down to the smallest details accurately depicts the late 1990s - early 2000s in China, then I clicked on the description and understood: This film IS made in 2001, IS based on a true event from 1999, and is directed by Dayyan Eng, featuring his wife as the female protagonist. If you do not know about Dayyan Eng: his [Waiting Alone] is one of THE best films made in modern day China. Please enjoy, for if for nothing else, this one is like a time capsule straight from 2000s Chinese cinematography.

I just realised the director already gave the audience a clue that the driver and her passengers would die. The Chinese characters”四十四”(44) and “死” (dying) sound the same. 4:58 "Why is everyone just sitting?" You know, that's a good question. Why is everyone just sitting when our collective bus gets hijacked? Why don't 12+ people stand up to just 2? Why don't we all team up against tyrants? Individuality in a society is a great thing. It means you get treated as a person rather than a replaceable cog in a machine. But on the other hand, it means that on a hijacked bus you feel alone against your attackers, despite there being many other people in the same boat as you. Society needs more cohesion. We all need to look at the people around us and understand that we're all the same, and we're all in this together. Tribalism is a very bad thing, but being alone is also pretty bad.

So essentially we need to learn when to look at ourselves as individuals and when to see eachother as a group?
@CristiNeagu3 жыл бұрын
@@seraphim108 It's a tricky one. People are individuals, and treating people just as part of some group rather than as individuals has led to the atrocities we saw in the 20th century. So we must belong to a group and feel some sort of pride in it. It's a very difficult question of morality and group belonging.

I loved this film because of how well made and straight forward the story telling is. But the fact that 20-30 people just stayed in place and didn't help the most important person of the group (the driver they're all relying on to get them to their destination) fills me with such anger. These people on the bus that didn't lift a finger to help the driver are the same ones who criticize strangers for not stepping up and doing more to help other people. Be the change you want to see in the world isn't just a saying it's a lesson. Do something. 20+ people against 2 idiots with a knife is great odds if you ask me. Bittersweet ending with her refusing to let the only passenger who helped (even though he failed but he tried which is more than anyone else bothered to) and she spared his life knowing she made up her mind to get revenge on all those passengers that didn't help her. Sad how we can prevent a tragedy but we choose not to get involved. Only causing us more pain in the end.

Very powerful - as old as it looks (2001, IS based on a true 1999 event ) directed by peerless Dayyan Eng, his wife as the bus driver.👏🏻👏🏻💔

How was justice served? Cowardly but very innocent people including the poor guy that was beaten up for his money all died.

She didn't stick up for the passengers. When the one guy resisted she yelled at him to: "Just give him your money!". I wonder if this is why none of them stuck up for her...

I’m obsessed with these videos. You guys deserve way more subscribers than you already have. As for the video; this is very accurate in reality. When most people (especially women) are in immediate danger, bystanders are scared to do something to help. And instead just take out their phones and wait for the police to arrive. ACTUALLY HELP. You can save their life.
