All weight stays on the engine beds....lifted up with two chain falls fore/aft So, the boat doesn't see any stress. Can pick up to above cabin floor....so plenty of room to work below...transmision comes up with it too. Retired now, but happy to loan you this fixture, under your supervision Knoxville area

I did pistons and liners in a 38 foot Hatteras when i was younger (this was in the 1980's).My advice is get it off that outside slip and see if you can dock it with the stern or bow facing the river and not port or starboard side facing the river like it is now. It would take the wakes of anything going up and down the river better while you have the engine up on blocks working on it. I was on the Hudson right across from NYC. This brings back memories of my years working in a marina. Some not so good, but it got me to where I am today.
@chrisclark621213 сағат бұрын
Acutally, it is pointed bow to the channel. That dock is actually facing a "cove" that the marina is in. It is actually a reasonable distance inside a no wake zone as well.

I am surprised that engine didn’t runaway at some point. Hopefully the buyer knew what he was getting into and the price of the purchase reflects the anticipated repair. Most certainly a survey was conducted. I am getting claustrophobic just thinking about climbing underneath a jacked up motor. A buddy of mine has a 21 foot cuddy, and me changing out that oil filter gives me an anxiety attack because of me being squeezed into a tight compartment. Boats are certainly a labor of love.

It’s more common now’s to cut the hulls and take them out sideways . We went through through this on a Grand Banks after our newly installed Fram oil filters split wide open underway. It’s a massive job and can’t imagine what that would cost today. Up through the flybridge and out the top . He should have called you before he transferred the money. The previous seller absolutely knew about that beforehand.

When I did the repower on my Cheoy Lee sportfish 50 I fabricated a lifting frame that I could bolt together in the engine room. I designed it to sit on the stringers to distribute the load. My boat had the 735hp 8v92TI engines. I stripped the engines down to short blocks before lifting it as high as possible so I could line the bilge with a bunch of sheet metal before stripping the short blocks and using a cutting torch and sledgehammer to break up the engine blocks into manageable sized pieces. The engine hatch was just large enough to bring in the 12.7 series 60 bare engine blocks which were around 650 pounds each.

I have owned three classic Hatteras with Detroit power. Those flush deck Hatteras models are designed with hatches above the engines that open into the salon floor for easy engine removal with an A-frame in the salon and a boom coming in from the aft deck. Often people build bars and counters on top of these hatches over the years which makes engine removal difficult. Since he just bought this boat, he should have a fresh engine survey report from a Detroit expert that was supposed to report the condition of the engines and any major issues so the buyer could negotiate the sale price down to include any major repairs such as this. I doubt this problem happened since he bought it, but I guess anything is possible. VERY cool of you to help him. Best of luck!

But that means all the floor stuff in the stern cabin has to come out. Same goes for the back stern windows so you can get a crane arm in. I was called in just after they had lowered the engine in. But they had to lift it out again so i could repair the harness first. Then hang around till they put it back in so i could test the wiring before leaving.

I've been around boatyards most of my life. It's not unusual for the yard to cut away the hullsides, lift the engines out of the boat that way, just replace the hull sections and re-fair after the engines go back in. In my Sportfish, had they needed to remove the engine blocks, they would have taken out the rear cabin wall and lifted the engines up through the main cabin. When I needed a major servicd, my mechanics could rebuild the engines in situ, only the floorboards in the main cabin needed to come up and they could do pistons and liners without removing the blocks.

I would hate to see what turbo service will cost IF they can be serviced. One thing for sure is that boat architects don’t give a hoot about the mechanics who will have to work on the mechanics of that craft. It should be mandatory that access panels must be provided where the complete engine can be removed from the craft without cutting any parts of the craft.

I feel sorry for the owner. He really got screwed buying that boat. For the kind of money those sell for, I’d have insisted on an engine inspection and at a minimum, oil analysis. There’s no way the seller didn’t at least suspect there was a problem with that engine.
