Ex marine engineer here. I'd say he was lucky - a bit more of this and you could be looking at a vented block. Unless they find bigger horrors when they get to the crank, it's "only" a major overhaul (bad enough but does not require replacing an engine which - on this boat - would be a real pain).

poor thing is in very bad shape. Reminds me of a Greyhound bus in Alice Springs Australia......that was sabotaged with valve grinding paste in the oil filter (disgruntled mechanic). Dam thing made it to Adelaide (1500km) and was blowing oil out the exhaust all over the bus. DETCO (Detroit diesel) in Adelaide discovered the carborundum contamination in every metal component.......entire engine went in the scrap bin. Not a single component could be re-used.

I bought my Hatteras 42 LRC with DD 4-53’s in her. Port engine showed some slight moisture in the valve cover cap. They said the cylinder head was reconditioned recently. No reason given however. Now six years later we have torn down the engine to find that it was overheated and the head wasn’t the only issue the Cylinder Sleeve seals were seeping coolant into the oil of course. So doing an in-frame rebuild now. If ANY moisture is present when checking out the oil fill cap either count on a rebuild or count your blessing every time you fire up and move… otherwise it has been a fantastic vessel and engine setup! Thank you for this video… I can feel for you with all the damage you have there!

Not necessarily, what should have happened is that thing SHOULD have had a fresh Survey and Sea Trial before the new buyer took ownership of it. If they didn’t that was a mistake. If there was an existing problem and it had been properly surveyed said problem most likely would have come to light. But freak things do happen. You might be correct but you certainly have no right to make that accusation about the seller. You don’t know what or wasn’t disclosed. It’s possible the new buyer may have wanted to save some money and not go through the survey process or they just didn’t know any better and if that was the case that bad on their part.

Yeah that's an awful lot of wear. I've pulled apart clapped out 4 cylinder 4-53's that were noisy, leaking, hard to start, and putting out a ton of blue smoke from worn out rings, and cam, and main bearings were still fine. Still a lot of crosshatch left in the original liners too, nothing scored, just old and worn. Rod bearings starting to show some copper but nothing ruined.

I actually worked as a mechanic at a marina in Washington DC. These guys who say that engines come out through doors in the deck must not have worked on many boats. We used to always bitch that the designers didn’t care about the mechanics who were going to have to work on these boats at some point. I have seen boats like that one your working on hit something in the water and tear up the skeg which required getting to the part from the inside but guess what was directly on top of the rudder box? A huge fuel tank. So the only way to fix it correctly is to remove the transom and pull out the tank or tanks. Most of the time if it was a bigger boat they would be totaled because of the work needed to do the repairs. The designers would put all the machinery in first then put the top on. I have worked on Carver boats where I had to hang upside down and reach back to pull a transmission out, not fun. If you have to jack the engine up to get at the pan you have to make sure that the prop shaft coupler is lined up perfectly when your done otherwise it will end up destroying the shaft and coupler. That’s why there are engine height adjustments on all four corners of the engine. I don’t miss it, so good luck and happy boating……

You guys are saints... those Detroits are extraordinary engines, and they're durable, but try to find someone to rebuild them was virtually impossible for me back in 1997 in FLorida.. Several diesel mechanic told me: "Run them until they won't start again, then find good used ones." I sold the boat to a broker rather than tackle my 871 ti's.. The start-up smoke belching from the exhausts was not tolerable, even though they ran perfectly once heated up. And I heard several horror stories of rebuilds that didn't work out, mainly because of fuel leaks under the rocker assemblies. Looking forward to each video with great interest.

For boats it's called a 'survey' and it does not usually include internal engine examination. It's often only external and functional checks, you can pay more for an oil sample and a sea trial, and on small gas engine boats some surveyors will do a compression check if its not a pita. Newer boats, you can pay for a mechanical survey to pull engine logs and do diags on the computer, which can do a 'contribution' test and QUICKLY identify a cylinder in trouble. I've not commonly seen it offered a sa standard service to inspect engine internals, but I've known very large ships owners to pay for another 3rd party to go into the crankcase. usually by physically entering it through a hatch!
@ThomasKuhar

Moral to this story: ALWAYS get a separate engine survey done in addition to the boat survey. I knew someone that STILL had a replacement for a CAT within a year of purchase even with a satisfactory engine survey. That was a nasty $50K surprise.

I worked on a ship for a couple of years. They replaced 2-12v71 motors with a pair of 8v92's. We didn't get far away from the dock when both motors started over heating & we faught with this problem for a month. It was determined that the cooling system in the motors were overheating because of vapor locks. The fix suggested by Detroit Diesal was to put a hose adapter into the block in one of the higher water jacket plugs & run a 3/4 hose up about 8 feet in the air. No more overheating issues.

I have a Nissan pickup with 330k miles so when I finally found a Nissan Xterra with just 159k miles I was excited as I hadn't found a manual transmission model for sale. I needed it for a daily driver and rv tow vehicle. Went to check truc, I listened to the engine, took for a bit of a ride flooring it, everything I looked at was fine. 30 mile trip home was fine then another day went to drive and it was bucking, crap power. My mechanic said it had a rod knock which I hadn't heard till later driving between 2 brick walls. Had to get a remanufactured engine...I know the feeling, got to get an inspection next time as I must be getting old. Now it's a nice truck at a nice cost with the new engine and clutch. Peace

Being in the market for a boat like that, I am curious if he bought it as a fixer upper, knowing there would be engine work. Or, if he had a survey done that checked the boat off as good to go and he was surprised to find the problems. I'd also be curious as to what kind of testing was done on the engines during the survey.

Nice flame pattern . On the EMDs we would insert a lead plug into each intake port,,bar the engine over and then remove the plug and measure the thickness . This would tell us if the bearings were ok . EMDs are too big to just remove the crank to mic it .😅

I had a forty one foot power trawler and it had a 4-53 in it. The oil pan had rusted out and the top of the engine was about maybe a eight inch gap from the kitchen (galley) floor. I had to remove that engine in pieces to get it out and replace all the stuff that had died (failed) as salt water just is not a good lubricant. Sorry if the next part hurts a guys feelers but as anyone knows, old boats made of wood and it was old, built in nineteen twenty seven for a governor in maryland. Really fancy and man being a eccentric sort and all, boat is my problem. I put a small block chevy pickup engine in it to do most of the work for running pumps and all. Surprisingly the prop did just fine and if ya didn't get in a huge hurry moved that boat around fifty plus miles from where it was setting on the beach to ketchikan. I did not have a place to live at the time so gutted that boat out, and left that gas engine in it to just move around in the harbor. Gasoline engines and boats is a recipe for dying. I finally found a job in camp come spring... got my brother to meet me out around the inlet where no one was wise to me... and dang.... she caught fire and within just minutes was a total loss so that my brother could bring me back to town and we did the act of huge loss of home thing. I wouldn't of done that but no way to insure a old boat like this that had been fiberglassed on the deck sealing moisture in the deck wood up. It had lasted that way for a good many years but by now no saving er. I saved the bell and wheel for a memory thinking I was good to go. Na, that never flies and the boat cops... can't think of their proper names told me "Morgan, we understand your situation" so no jail time, just pull your scrap out of the water. I go back to scene of crime, and sure enough, picked the only dang spot out there that had maybe six feet of depth when tide was out meaning my junk was quite visible and so removed it. I stood in the water and hooked up my recovery methods, brought it to shore where those water cops took me to a bar and bought me a couple drinks, and we laughed it off. Ya, I did like the boat but there is a time to cut the loss. This boat your tinkering on is a tad nicer for sure/LOL. I know if it were me, I would drag it out of the water to repair it. If oil did not make a huge mess, most of that detroit might of fell off the dock had I been there.

At about 12:42 you point the camera at the overhead and comment "See, no access..". What you are seeing is the "headliner" which is below about 3-4" of hard-foam insulation. The structural deck is above the headliner and foam. Remove the headliner, and you will see the outline of the soft-patch that needs to be cut. Originally, Hatteras motor yachts had carpet in the salon. Roll up the carpet, and again the soft patch was visible from above. You mention "hardwood floor", so that has probably been added. If it were my job, and I HAD to get it through the floor, I would locate the corners of the hatch from below, drill the corners, then from above use a skill saw to cut the floor and soft patch from the guide-holes.

Is this why the seller possibly sold it because of knowing the issues with the motor? Could the buyer had an inspection done on the engines before purchasing it?

What's with all the Delo 400 bottles around? I thought everyone knew you never ever use Delo 400 on a 2 smoker Detroit. Delo 100 is the right oil, or some other straight 40W low ash oil. Someone ran that thing into the ground, and then sold it cheap, and knew full well what was going on. There's no way an 8v92 gets that much camshaft and liner damage just overnight.

I ran Delo 400 40W in the 8V71TIs in my Hatteras 46 Convertible for 13 years from 950hrs at acquisition to 3,150 hours when we sold it. 100-125 hour change interval. Our cruising RPM was 1800 for 16 GPH burn (each) for 16 Knots boat speed. 1/2 Mile per Gallon. The wear grooves in the pistons were still there when the air box covers came off for the survey. Delo 400 40 did just fine for us. And it was readily available.

@@davep800 Those are also a 4000 hr engine so you were still well below the recommended time @ 3150 for an overhaul, or at least a maintenance tear down to check everything.

delo 400 used to be cf2 rated and a great oil for the detroit diesel 2 stroke. However they reformulated it and it is no longer a cf2 low ash oil. It is not approved anymore for the 2 stroke. It used to be one of the best but not anymore

Man there is nothing worse than working on Diesels in big boats.. i grew up with my old man working on these at the marinas i used to get sea sick just from the motion of the boats rocking back and forth while tryin to scrap down the heads and stuff for dad.. he hated working on them but work is work

Should find a restaurant supply house and by dish boy pans. The plastic pan used to empty dinner tables. Or go to Lowe’s and buy a cement mixer pan. It will make it easier to move things or catty liquids. Have fun.

I'm sure you know this but just in case, be aware, those high HP engines are set to run with advanced timing on the cam gears. those are 2300 to 2500 rpms engines, pleasure rating. make sure the blower shaft is in good shape, same goes for the forks for the fuel pump. they do forget to put the R80 on the fuel line return too. Are booth having the same issue? are they both RH or is the other one LH? How many hours on those? Hope he did get the boat cheap and has a bunch of spare cash, it will be needed, what kind of gears on them, MG514 2:1 probably
