Bush Beans Beat Me | My 2022 Garden Nemesis

I love beans in most forms (like green beans that include the pod or black beans that only include the bean), but how do you know which is which when buying seeds? I was pretty confused this season as I was mainly looking for the kind where you'd eat the whole pod. And then what's the difference between bush beans or a pole bean, other than of course one vines & one doesn't.. Thanks!

So a lot of beans can be eaten as either green bean or as dry beans but usually ones meant tk eaten one way or another are better. A green bean will say usually green bean or eat fresh where are dry beans will usually say dry bean or shelling bean. That’s sort of the primary way, scarlet runner can be eaten green, shelled and not dry or fully dry!

im 73 years old and have grown green beans for more than 50 years. From experience i can say that prolonged periods of high heat, 85+ degrees will cause green beans to drop their blossoms. Has it been unusually hot in San Diego this year?

It is a matter of timing : when you have had super hot temperatures, the flowers didn’t have a chance to form properly: they got burnt . They like the warm soil to get started but this year has been really hot , and the bees haven’t had the chance to pollinate due to the lack of flowers.

The bean struggle is real! I planted green beans and black eyed peas in the same bed this spring. The black eyed peas took over and the green beans were never heard from again (moment of silence)... at least new years lunch is covered. Your bush beans look like my struggle pole beans. It was a light and heat issue; Bay Area weather was just weird for a few months. They just stalled and have yet to flower. Bush beans planted two months later (more heat, plus finally added an olla) are doing much better.

Holy crap i thought i was the only one! My bush beans have not grown at all and didn’t pump the true leaves out for at least a month! Something also came along and ate the tops once they finally started going. My pole beans on the other hand are chugging along just fine! First year gardening and ive grown and harvested tomatoes and peppers but damn beans are just not working in my garden.

Bush beans like it hot but not that hot. I'm in Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺 I can grow them all year round but avoid Jan Feb as this is the hottest it gets. Also I drench the ground first, poke my seeds in and do not water again until they pop up, again a good drenching of water and then again once they start flowering, this produces a ton of beans. I've also found transplanting beans never give as good as a crop as when I direct sow. I use the birdies raised beds hugelkuter method 🙂

Hey , 1st. Its been a challenging growing year almost everywhere- I've had trouble getting zucchini, of all things! Late frost, early heat wave, flooding, pests, blights...you name it. I have had success with Tip Top green beans from Roughwood Seeds- fast growing, hardy and productive. Appreciate your evaluations and explanations, and your garden is looking great.

OMG. I had the exact same problem with my beans this summer. I had both bush and pole beans. I would get, like 2 beans every few days 🤬 Guess it wasn’t our year for beans!

I am in the mountains of SW Virginia and I am getting a bumper crop of bush beans this year. I only plant bush beans and I have a small garden but I have been able to can 21 quarts of green beans so far, we have eaten multiple meals and I have given some away. I have grown about 5 different varieties, some of the seeds I have had for several years!

The mountains had a lot more reasonable weather. I’m in the E TN Valley and we were getting temps like 97F feels like 107F. My peppers totally stalled. It’s finally cooled down - 85F feels like 95F - and they’re finally growing. Thankfully, the tomatoes and herbs did well.

Love your channel Jacques. As much as I love gardening it is a lot of work. So when the "fruits of your labor" never show up it is disheartening. My battle this year was with my tomatoes and prized 10 yr old avocado tree. I thought I had a bumper year for both, but this heat has really done a number on my tomato plants. Those tomatoes are done. I've planted a few more, but lets see how they handle the heat for the rest of summer. My tree was covered in baby avocados so I was thrilled. I was monitoring the water and watching them grow. Then end of July heat came and they started to fall off. Still have a good amount on the tree but I still have to get through August and September heat (I live near Los Angeles). I love gardening, I call it my therapy so I will plug on. I really enjoy seeing you share how you work at it like the rest of us. Thank you!

Growing beans here in Northern Oregon and I've got flowers and a grand total of three beans growing. Growing all kinds, too - Scarlet Runners, Akasanjaku, Blue Lake Bush, Kentucky Wonder Pole...nothing. We have tons of pollinators in the garden too, going crazy with the zinnias and borage, and already have a bumper crop of cukes and squash that got pollinated just fine. Weird! Thanks for sharing your experience, and good tip on leaving the root nodules in ground so at least there's some benefit to growing bean-less bushes.

The spider mites and the dry drought weather in tone 10s just wrecks my beans. I planted rattlesnake pole beans and they've been producing pretty decently. Mites still get at it, but not as bad as my bush beans

Western Oregon, same. Scarlet Runners are producing flowers but no beans. I have harvested a few Royal Burgundy. My kidney beans are covered though so who knows? Our sunshine didn’t start until mid- June so I thought that might have something to do it. Interesting to know that it’s happening to others.

I'm in northern New Mexico and I had great bush bean production last year. This year, only a small handful. I planted some from the previous year's packet and saved seed from the harvest to plant this year. Both were as you describe.

I am having the same issue this year! I'm also in So Cal, and I have 4 types of pole beans growing that I started in MAY... and it is now AUGUST... and still no beans. Lots of flowers... but no beans. The flowers just eventually dry up and fall off.

Provider bush beans have always done the best for me...so far anyhow. I don't have very many varieties under my belt. But I had a real issue with my Marvel Of Venice yellow pole beans...only a few plants out of 20+ seeds actually germinated and are growing beans. I did get a purple variety from someone local(unsure name-im in Ontario Canada) and they are BEASTS!!! Theyre going nuts! But yes Provider..which is from Johnny's ..I'm on my third crop this year and I'm in zone 4B..short season

South Florida here, and the beans that I have been growing have been such a disappointment. There are several factors for this, for me. It has been so HOT!!!! I usually say I live on the hinges of Hades, but this year has been worse, by about 5degrees. Second, we discovered root know nematodes, and are dealing with that. Can't wait to see how this works out for you!

This is a really useful experiment thanks for sharing. Literally with the strange weather everywhere like for instance in Northwest Oregon we had a really cool beginning to our summer it was like a high of 67 for a while and then it jumped up to over a 100 and up in the upper nineties for days at a time. I'm gardening on a deck a covered one mind you; And my beans are just now growing up so not even flowers yet.

I planted golden butterwax bush beans for the first time earlier in June (also it's my first time gardening in general) and this video popping up reminded me to go check on them. I got a pretty decent harvest of fully grown beans, and I left on the smaller ones. In some other epic gardening videos, Kevin mentioned that harvesting them helps them to produce more. I don't have anything to compare it to but I did think that today's harvest was smaller than what I was expecting for this time of year. I'm sorry that this hasn't been the year of beans for you, but thank you for posting this video! It reminded me to get into the garden, and now I've got dinner.

I had high success with bush beans just soaking the beans overnight and direct sowing them. I probably watered them a total of three times all season and they loved it.

Green beans have a mind of their own!! Some years are great, the next, without any reason at all, are terrible!!!! I’ve started using 1/4” drip with emitters every 6” and winding them along each row, securing them with garden staples. I also link the line back into the main supply line. Jacques, like some of the other commenters mentioned, it may be a heat issue. Some bean varieties just stall out when it gets too hot. Maybe shade netting can help? Regardless, your garden looks very productive overall. A second round of squash is always nice.

Western Maryland, zone 6b. Late, cold spring, then birds went for my seedlings so that I had to replant and net the next round. The second round grew wonderfully, but heat knocked the blossoms off, and then were additionally challenged by Japanese beetles. Both bush and runner beans have struggled, except for my cowpeas. Local farmers tell me their beans are having a bad year, and we are all hoping for better luck with our latest round of planting.

Did a succession planting late July. Some insect is eating the germinated seeds. I can't win. I put down food grade diamectous earth, I think to late. Sigh. I am in Michigan and time is growing short. Going to try one more time, use a different pot, hopefully will have some success. 3x is a charm right?

I’m in Central Coastal California, my beans didn’t germinate until the beginning of August after successive plantings, but now they are looking like they should in April. Weird year for green beans, by this time last year I was sharing my surplus harvests with friends and neighbors. My tomatoes have just now starting to ripen. Again tomatoes are really late this year. I haven’t done anything different this year, so maybe weather is to blame? Zucchinis and peppers are doing great!

I've had a terrible bean season, too. 5 weeks of 100+ degree weather after a rainy, cold Spring didn't help. I planted 6 different varieties of beans, and the only one to produce was the Red Noodle beans. I yanked all beans, and even thought I have time for one more crop, but I'm cutting my losses and preparing for fall brassicas.

Might have had to good of soil nutrients. I've only had issues with beans a few times . Put in a heavy feeder afterwards and they did great. Also put in beans after a heavy feeder, like you did after corn, and the beans did very well. I treat beans like herbs now and they do well. I don't measure when I fertilize, have a feeling I over do it. But for beans I use no amendments at beginning, nor the inoculation. But after they start growing only compost tea or worm tea and they thrive. Beans always do better for me direct sowing vs transplant and I've never used the inoculation powder.

Rollie Pollies Actually eat bean leaves if they're close to the ground, to get rid of them use an old damp rolled up newspaper on the garden bed, they'll collect under and in it, dispose of roll often as necessary. 👍

Oh dear if you hit home here . My spring beans either pole or bush did so poorly that i found my self planting noodles beans and now i got beans , anyways got to hot in southeast around may and the flowers would fall off . Could that being the issue? I have heard that the fava been can do wonders to poor soil , i got to admit i love the flavor of the fava been so i am will to try this winter , eat some , and sacrifice the rest to help my soil with awesome nutrition. Contender , is a bush bean and i planted for the fall harvest. It's doing alright. Keeping my fingers crossed. Ai ai 🙄

Hey Jacque, Talk about bean woes! In years past, I have had great bean harvests. This year, not so much. I saved Kentucky Wonder pole beans from last years bumper crop and got absolutely nothing. They all came up, even flowered, but produced NO beans. I did have a problem with Japanese Beetles, but used traps to catch a multitude of those buggers! Nevertheless, no beans. My other nemesis was bunny rabbits. My Jade and Contender bush beans gave me a couple of great harvest, but once the bunnies found them, every bean sprout was eaten off.😡 My fall starts of lettuce and broccoli are now covered with an insect/pest barrier. Bush beans don't do well in summer for me. It is too hot and humid. I had better luck with Asparagus beans and heat resistant pole beans. However, while the beans flowered, the birds ate the bean tips and the beans. So, I will need to use bird netting next time.

Man. I felt that frustration for you. I'm still learning what my plants like. Last year's explosion of Indigo Cherry tomatoes' (assumed to be heirloom) saved seeds never sprouted in the amended, watered, protected garden. Except in the rocks next to my flagstone, with no water, surrounded by weeds and only morning sun. I know it's the indigo cherry from the blue stem. Though I saw two little flowers today, I think it's too late for fruit to form. I'll pot it up and hope it makes it to the garden next year. It's offensive, how beautiful the plant is, considering where it planted itself. lol

Rollie pollies ate my store bought plants roots last year. Sooo I bought the plants put them in a raised bed and within days one died. I didn't know why thought the sun cooked it but then another one died and I pulled the plant and guess who was comfortably digged in the root ball. It was a family of stinking pill bugs. They were young plants with healthy white roots.

Hello! Love your channel! I planted bush beans and they germinated fast ,we're growing fast then bam slowed down drastically. Then they started getting these tiny brown spots all over the foliage. The new growth is fine the. A few days and it's covered as well. It looks like they have bloomed but im afraid it will spread if I leave them. Please someone HELP! LOL This is food for my family , grocery prices are outrageous and green beans are one of the only veggies my kids will eat.

I had the worst luck with beans this year. I’m on my third try so far. Some fruited, but they are so puny and not growing fast at all. I started some AAS winner variety in a greenstalk, so fingers crossed. My neighbor had her crops fail, too. I noticed quite a few gardeners having a hard time with beans this year.

We had the same problem two years ago. I planted my peppers right next to the beans and not one single bean formed. I found out that something happening underground prohibits beans from growing when planted next to peppers. The year before we planted beans next to squash and had 3x massive harvests.

My beans are struggling as well. Glad to see I am not alone. Unfortunately, our first frost is not far away so I do not have time to replant.

My 2022 beans were off to a good start and then one day I started to notice a leaf issue that just took over and effected all four varieties. I thought I might try a Scarlett pole bean and Contender bush beans this year. Even these fail, I'll be finished with wasting my money and time on beans.

i live in escondido, and my beans have been struggling all year. i put up a 30% shade cloth and they blew up and the beans i grew with my corn, once the corn was tall enough to block out some of the sun, then they blew up as well. i have a dozen bean in red solo cups since may, and once the shade cloth went up they have tripled in height and are producing beans.

Could be the sun or heat but they get a fair amount of shade

We haven’t gotten green beans in 2 or 3 years now bc the rabbits eat all the seedlings down to stems overnight

The heat..beans if heat stressed will drop blossoms. Any heat over 85 F..will do this. When it cools they will set fruit.

It hasn’t been over 85 except for the past 2 weeks! That’s why I excluded heat

I’m in SoCal, inland empire, and I lost all my summer squash, two spaghetti winter squash and two watermelon plants to rollie-pollies this year. They chewed through all of the stems of these plants. I tries beer and/or fruit rind traps and got at least 1000 of them. I resorted to DE around the stems of my remaining plants. I have no idea where the rollie-pollies came from, I’ve never had this particular pest problem before.

I've had bad luck putting mulch over bean seeds...the roly-polys like the moisture under the mulch and completely trash the seedlings as they emerge. My pole beans are producing faster than I can eat/freeze/dehydrate them but I have no success with bush beans. Let us know how this works out!
