Too cold for anything but garlic outside, so I’ve started playing under the grow lights and in the south facing windows in the winter. Tried orange hat mini tomatoes. Good little producers but very tart. I’ve tried different greens, sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, strawberries, cat grass, micro greens, and sprouts. The lettuces 🥬 have done the best.

Great timing. Up in NorCal with my first overwintered eggplant and whew you pruned them more that I anticipated. Good to know.

I actually have some basil and a bell pepper plant or tree that I’ve already overwintered last year or maybe even two years that they’re in my house and in my garage I have my Meyer lemon in Texas have been dropping down to FROST so I have some plants out there covered But I did bring some inside 🌱🌱

Good to see someone overwintering eggplant, too. Its too cold here (pdx) to overwinter outside but they get temporary residence in the dining room. I've had some new growth but we're still six months from moving outdoors again. At what point do they start getting fed anything but water? Their 5g buckets are half to two-thirds full of mediocre soil, and they're getting about a quart of water once a month...ish. The other unexpected plant this winter is a tomato volunteer from the worm castings on a houseplant. I'll need to pot it up soon; a lanky 18" tall plant in a 4" pot is a recipe for breakage

Great info! I am VERY interested in in-ground over-wintering of peppers and eggplants in Santa Rosa, CA (9b). I am over-wintering about 25 pepper plants in the ground under hoop enclosures covered with clear tarps. So far they are all alive, despite ants, voles, deer mice, mold and sow bugs. I think I figured out how to defeat them next year. 🙂Getting a jump start on 20+ peppers this spring will be AWESOME! Any pointers on this technique are welcomed, especially since I am boldly going where I never went before!

I'm likely going to be doing this for the coming winter. Last year I grew chillis/capsicums in pots and managed to overwinter a few, the ones in ground I just let them die back in winter. This year I've invested so much in growing in the ground(with way better results) that I think I'm going to plant around them to try to let them overwinter in their original spot. My winter should be coming as yours ends so I look forward to seeing how this turns out haha

I got seeds for Japanese eggplants to grow this season. 3-4 varieties. I’ve been obsessing over eggplants and already looking for recipes online. I’m really looking forward to tasting the variety called Mitoyo and Nagasaki long. Can’t wait.

Jacque, question for you: will my squirrels eat my eggplants? I have a serious squirrel and bird problem. They eat all my kale, tomatoes, and brassicas. But fortunately they do not eat my peppers, okra, or squash. What do you think Jacque?

Now that the winds died down I harvested my eggplants today, got 8 big ones! This is a good reminder to cut the plant down tomorrow. My lemon peppers are still blooming and producing a lot so not sure if I will cut them back yet. Also getting 15 Roma tomatoes a day. The lack of rain in San Diego has made for a really strange season. Curious how the plants are going to react, I even have papayas blooming!

What are your favourite eggplant recipes? I only grow fairy tale eggplant and just throw it in whole in a roast or I stir fry it. Any other ideas ?

Salt planks to get rid of moisture and any bitterness, then pat dry. Then place them in a shallow pan of hot bacon fat and cook until crispy on both sides. Boom. Eggplant bacon 😊❤

Here are a few ways we like it. Chinese style steamed and seasoned various ways but usually something with black vinegar. Roasted with olive oil and garlic and then added to anything like pasta or bowls. Eggplant and tomato sauce is really delicious with pasta instead of just straight tomato!

Hey Jacque, I still have poblano and jalapeño peppers producing fruit on the plants how do I know if I should pull them out of my garden beds and put them up for the winter or leave them in place? Also, do you know when they’re gonna stop producing fruit? I’m in San Marcos California. Also, thank you for this video. It’s very informative.

I tried this several years in a row, but they always died. The eggplants got destroyed by white mites no matter what I did, and the peppers just withered and died. Both wasted all their energy putting out new leaves with no way to stop them, until the plants ran out of energy. It took me far less time and effort restarting everything from seeds the following year.

I usually just accept that some don't make it and that's ok with me. The ones that do will give me a head start and then I fill in the gaps
