The Weedy Garden

Жыл бұрын

After the bush turkey demolished my garden, I figured it was time for payback. Bush turkeys make their nests by scratching leaves and twigs and bark together into a huge compost pile. When it heats up (as composts do) the female will lay her eggs in the mound. The male then protects the nest from predators and regulates the heat until the chicks hatch. Then the compost just becomes part of the forest unless it becomes part of my garden.
Next year it will make a new one from scratch, but in the same spot as always. The pile just gets bigger and bigger over time.

Hi Weedy! Gotta love nature and the way Bush turkeys are so integral to keeping the forest floor composted! Beautiful cycle! Hope that compost goes awesome in your garden 🪴 💐

Weedy, i noticed something. You like me, ten years ago the bucket would have been full when we got back up the hill. I know what you are going to say, but hear me out. You have a great method of carrying two buckets , but when you filled them up at the turkey nest, you must have tripped and spilled some or you just had to lighten the load. Because they were a bit lighter when you got to the garden.

Australian native bird that looks slightly similar to a turkey. They can fly short distances and have a reputation for destroying gardens. They are extremely prolific. We have at least 20 that live in our backyard in Sydney. Despite being a bit of a pest and in abundant supply they are a protected species

Hey weedy, what about plant them some of the food closer to their nest or right in it so they won't come to you. They might make a new nest further from your place. I guess you will have to fence your land.

Fences don’t stop them because they fly and it’s too much hastle to do plant food for them. I have resorted to mesh laid on the ground at planting. i can then easily remove it again at harvest
