I started out with the small one about 7 years ago. It was OK, but you really have to nurse it all the time (as you see with yours, only more). I got the large one after a year or two, and tend to use it with a handful of charcoal to prolong the burn time. I'm glad they didn't do the LF back then, otherwise I'd probably have bought that too, and wasted my time money before I figured out it has the same problem, and ended up getting the XL anyway. The small one works great as a holder/windbreak for a meths burner. You *could* use it as a wood burner, in a pinch, But... The XL (IMHO) is about as small as you can get *and* keep a decent fire going without having to constantly babysit it. I do love the XL. Had it for years now, been all over with it. It *is* a bit on the heavy side for backpacking. It tends to live in my van these days. I did consider the titanium version, but I hear grumblings about it distorting with the heat (a bit of a problem for a stove).
@SummitOrNothing4 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks for the feedback. I think this would be fine for what I need - stopping for a cuppa mid route or what have you - and as you say the XL is probably heavier. Interesting that the titanium isn't all that though! Cheers for the heads up!

With any wood box or gasifier stove, it always works better to load the stove up with fuel and then put your kindling and tinder on top. It gives it material to burn into and helps build up an ember base that is easier to manage and maintain. Also, because of cook times, try cooking the bacon first and then cook the eggs in the bacon grease.
@SummitOrNothing4 жыл бұрын
Cool, cheers - I will try that with the kindling next time... thanks for the tip... although, I did cook the bacon first and then the egg?!

I’ve been using the bush box LF a couple years now mate, never let me down, lots little tricks that they don’t tell you on the box, if you look at the sides you can slot the two metal pan holders through that an use a trangia inside it, also the holes are the correct diameter for tent pegs in case you lose the metal pan holders, you can also use those (pan holders) half way through the side slots incase you need to move the box while it’s lit 👍👍 namaste mate

Hi Trev, my brother and I have been cooking on something similar for quite a while now and can even do fish and chips, steaks etc as well as having a tripod to put over to do stew and dumplings. we tend use it at the beach, in the woods or farm fields in cornwall. However we generally don't take it too Dartmoor as they can scorch the ground, we even invested in bunsen burner mats to try and stop it but they can crack with the heat. They are a great fun way to cook and we love taking cooking photos on our days out.

We've recently bought the XL, have used it at home just for the fire and heat. Today is our field test day as we're heading out for a hike and will be cooking bacon and eggs on it. Especially during the winter months when we get a lot of snow and very cold weather out on the Sperrins.

Great video Trev. I've got the Firebox stove which is pretty much the same thing, slightly bigger. They are great. So versatile and from a survival point of view, as long as you have means to start a fire ( ferro rod etc) and one of these, you're sorted. As I said to you about the Olight torches and collecting things, you're on the slippery slope now mate. Won't be long and you'll have a shed full of stoves lol. You and Mark are right about eggs, for the reason you said. Also, fish lay eggs and so do amphibians and the reptiles which preceded the dinosaurs. I wonder how big pterosaur eggs were? Your stove does not look small to me but I was thinking how much wood would be needed to fill it. Lots, particularly after a long walk on a damp day. That bark you had was lovely and dry. If you roughed it up by scraping with a knife so it becomes furry, it would light from a spark. Paul Messner packs the twigs in vertically and gets a very long burn time but I haven’t tried that. I’ll have to look at the small stove. My Ti DX is too unstable and is a poor shelter for an alcohol stove. Maybe a Bushbox would solve those problems. A good, informative video. Thank you.

Summit Or Nothing - Trev if your interested I’ve just done an interview for BBC Radio Devon about Dartmoor wild camping. It can be found on the BBC sounds app - search for the Breakfast on BBC Radio Devon at 0710 this morning. I think you would be interested to hear it.

I have two of these but the Chinese copy’s , one is ally and rather heavy in my opinion but larger the other is a small titanium one , very light , I got for bikepacking , however as they are Chinese copy’s , they are a f**king nightmare to assemble, as you have to clip all the pieces together and they don’t bloody fit nice at all 😹 gets what ya paid for right ! wicked little stoves when they don’t take half an hour to assemble ... I would definitely invest more money in one that doesn’t need to be pieced together just to save my stress levels !

Haha... A natural I'm sure lol. Yea it looks a decent bit of kit. More for my coast camps, I don't think this would be acceptable on Dartmoor to be honest. Cheers for watching, Ash.

Trevor,having just watched the news, I was wandering if you felt any kind of guilt or even partial responsibility for the recent announcement about the shutdown of some wild camping spots on Dartmoor? As you,like many others on KZbin do broadcast to all and sundry where to go and free camp there? You are trying to make yourself money (like others) by potentially and I guess unwittingly,aiding the ruin of many natural beauty spots for future generations. Maybe you should at least make a video asking your viewers not to go there and leave their rubbish and toilet waste etc everywhere before they make Dartmoor a no go area for any kind of camping activities. And actually donate any moneys made towards the upkeep of Dartmoor national park rather than buying more un-biodegradeable plastic items for you to review. Regards,a disheartened and worried Dartmoor lover for over fifty years.

Barry - that is a valid point you make, but I have always encouraged leaving no trace, and respecting the rules of Dartmoor, as I explained in this video here when I realised that I was becoming an influencer and many were wanting to experience the moors for themselves - if you haven't already watched it then I hope it will set your mind at rest as to what I am promoting- kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXeUdIqgpbB-r5Y - I do not feel responsible or guilty as I am almost certain that those who are tearing up the moors are most probably not people who watch my videos. I think they are most likely festival goers and youngsters who have no where to go during this time with festivals and social gatherings called off at present and they certainly have no sense of the beauty and history of the area. Of course am saddened and maddened by the behaviour of others. We took our children down to Bellever last friday and left within minutes because we were disgusted by what we saw. They were not wild campers, they were not there to appreciate the beauty as I always encourage in my videos, and that we are all luckily entitled to. Remember that Bear Grills and Ray Mears, Two Blondes Walking and Country file encourage us to explore Dartmoor, too, as does the Dartmoor's own magazine and website, and to a far greater audience than I do, and Trail Magazine, Country Walking, The Great Outdoors Magazine.... I can not be held responsible for the actions of the ill informed. The spots that they are going to are not the locations where I have been or promoted in my videos either, they are the popular spots advertised and well known to others. I am not just walking Dartmoor to make money, I am walking it because I, like you love it and I will encourage others to make the most of what we have. The fact that I buy and review budget gear is niether here nor there, and although I do appreciate the point that you are making I certainly have never felt that my videos encourage people to go and treat the Dartmoor with any disregard.

Mr Walnut, Seriously, you wish to try and lay all the blame on the head of one man who actively promotes responsible outdoor activity? What is your problem? Do you want the place all to yourself? Are you that entitled? I know of places all around the world that face these issues, being almost loved to death by people visiting them. But none of the visitors can be put down to just one you tuber. In these times of economic uncertainty, a man who promotes healthy outdoor activity, at a price people can afford, should be applauded. Not made the focal point for your own particular brand of sanctimonious elitism. You sir, are a wanker. Keep up the good work Trev! When travel is opened up again, I intend to come there, spend my money in your country, admire the beauty that exists in your nation outside the metropolitan areas and enjoy some of the places you have given us just a glimpse of. I will do this with the "take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints" mantra that you ALWAYS promote. (And you're still a pommy git.😂😂💋♥️.) Respect and peace from down under.
