A safety tip for anyone wanting to try this stropping method. Be very careful not to let the side of the wheel running toward you grab the axe blade as it will throw it at you in a nasty way. Always hold the blade against the side running away 👍🏻

Thanks for sharing this. Great informational video. I also have an axe that needs some love. A Helko I bought about 10 years ago for 45 quid and I realised it was capable of being an awesome axe if I spent some time on it. I have never got around to it but after watching this I'm off to dig it out from the back of the shed and give it some Swamp Valley love.

Smaller than the hand forged version, but this is a nice lighter axe. How much and where from. Finish like you do with the Husqvarna carpenter axe. That is a heavier zxe and very nice for £39.00! I thought they came with straight handles?

Yea they seem to have stopped making it like this one but Husqvarna make a similar one that's great too 👍

@@SwampValley i have the Husqvarna version, and all the rest of the axes. All just need finishing yourself, but i bought the carpenter, forest, and camp axe for less than a Gransfors small forest axe. I have one of those and the grain orientation is crap, the head is not on straight, and it had several steps in the grind, then stropped badly. All the handles on the Husqvarna axes were perfect! And the drop forged Hultafors have both straight and curved handles now, £54 from Knives and Tools.

Thanks, going forward I'd get a pack of 2500 wet and dry and get a really shiny edge again with the buffing compound but I'm planning on splashing the cash on a proper set of Japanese stones some time cos that's what the bigger boys use. had you sharpened that hatchet on the left side of that disc, there wouldn't be a bur.

It's very dangerous to do that, the edge can bite into the disk and get launched towards you, so I really would advise against that.
@pdufusc3 жыл бұрын
@@SwampValley That's the reason you use a stone grinder or belt sander on low rpm, and keep my belt tight. Been looking for one of the larger stones, 3" x 20". Stalberg model £85.00. tibro £85.00 to £89.00. So tthere is no difference in a standard axe or premium axe. Tibro are mass made, stalberg are suppose to be hand made ie:power hammer. Yet they are charging the same. A standard hatchet is £22.00 a premium is 90.00. All i can say is " the robbing f- - - - - g barstools!

@@SwampValley i purchased a husqvarna carpenter axe, spent 20 minutes sanding the handle, and i buffed the edge up a bit, didn't need to has it was very sharp. The fit was better than the GB's or hults. Considering they are all owned by same firm. It cost £40.00 i could buy two or even three for the price of the others. And it's a good axe, made in Sweden!

I tried this with a dewalt orbital sander, basically a grinder body but variable speed. it can be put on a slow speed. Then stopped, and it is wicked sharp. Try a plaster board sander and really fine wet and dry just to keep edge in good condition. Melt some beeswax and mix with boiled li seed oil, let it set, apply with rag. Leave for 5 mins, them buff. Also put on the head when storing stays on for ages and protects from rust. ! @@SwampValley
