Yep - they're what we used to call "sand hoppers". Very common on NZ beaches everywhere. They also nip bare skin, so beware...

Yeah this wasn't on DOC land so it was all good. But the reason I haven't used mine much is you have to get a permit from DOC for each area you want to fly in. Costs money and is a pain in the ass. Cheers

Great video I really enjoyed this very nice and relaxing video. They're called a sand scarab beetle. They are native to New Zealand, and are found on beaches throughout New Zealand. That was a great attempt on the spoon. Next time you'll get it (- ; Beautiful sunset scenery of the ocean. I really enjoy watching all your videos. Thanks for your great entertainment.

Thermarest Neo air x therm. It is pretty pricey, I got mine second hand and it still wasn't cheap but it is IMO one of the best mats out there. Hasn't let me down yet. Cheers

Hey Jim. The knife was made for me by Caleb Cox on the BCUSA forum. The style of knife is known as a tracker or WSK. A decent manufactured model would be the tom brown tracker by TOPS. Hope that helps. Enjoy your South Island trip! It's a beautiful place. Cheers

Take the ridges out of your ferro rod with a file. And coarse sander paper.
