I started building my first permanent shelter.
I have been learning how to build a permanent shelter in the wilderness using only materials I can find in thew wilderness. The very first step in building a permanent shelter is choosing the location. Location is important and you want to pick an area that has all the resources you are looking for. I have chosen to build this long therm shelter on a hilltop from where I can have a good view of everything around.
As with any other form of construction, permanent log shelters became popular because of the availability of necessary materials. Once upon a time, vast forestlands once covered this land. This provided an abundant supply of building material for those who chose to build in this way.
Properly made, a permanent log shelter is strong, well able to withstand winter storms. Even so, the walls don’t do a great job of providing insulation. In fact, it was not uncommon for the walls to have ice on the inside, even while the fire was roaring in the fireplace. But then, those early fireplaces weren’t all that efficient.
Were you or I to be faced with a survival situation, where we needed to create an alternate home in the wilderness, a log cabin would be a good alternative. While they are hard to build, they would provide a secure and durable home for your family. Just make sure you have the right tools to work with, as having the right tools will make your job easier and your log cabin turn out better.
A permanent shelter is a small log cabin built that has been built quickly using only what the land provides. With this five-step guide, you should effectively be able to build this cabin if you were in the wild, with a friend, and the only tools you had were your axes. It’s exactly that, the best house and shelter you can build without needing any large tools. It is a solid and dependable home that uses logs as a way to keep a strong foundation and shelter, and double as a way to keep the place insulated against the cold. A permanent log shelter is not going to get blown away, and if made correctly, will stand and remain standing for quite some time.
The structure of the survival shelter is made so that, if you don’t have them, there is no need to use screws or nails (although these are an option if you have them). Instead, most log cabins and survival cabins use carved locking methods that allow the ends of the logs to interlock with the others. This survival cabin uses a v-locking system, where ‘v’ shaped notches are cut into the logs and sit in the grooves of each other to create a firm wall for the log cabin.
There are many reasons for building a permanent shelter. You might be building in preparation for wilderness survival, or, you might be out in the wilderness and find yourself needing a semi-permanent structure that will last a few months - in which case, your regular tarp shelter won’t do.

@@BushcraftMood I have a idea 💡. Why not just get a lot of wood. Get a real tall ladder. And hammer the wood 🪵. Logs. Into the ground. Then build roof. Then add mud on outside. Then add wood going the other direction outside would that work to keep warm.

I’d make a dark bedroom , using the dark tarp, like you did ,on top of the roof , then I’d make ,a living room UDING clear plastic for light , on top of roof , then a kitchen ,,with a mud stove, and fireplace ,,in all of the rooms there , would be a fireplace to keep warm. I’d make a cabin ,where theirs fruit trees , nut trees , and a river , with fish in it. Then get chickens , and make a barn for them ,with 2 fireplaces ,on each side ,to keep them warm for winter. I’d use mud on top of the roof , and , in between the logs 🪵. I’d make clay pots and pans , and dishes to eat with , and make wooden , utensils to eat with . I’d put up mud and ,moss walls surrounding the cabin , for , extra warmth to get it away from the wind I would build an outer edge, to hide my cabin for wartime. Then I’d dig around the sides to make shure it wouldn’t flood , make shure the cabin , is high ground . I love watching , bamboo houses , or underground houses. Great ideas up there , YOULL love it too. Take a look. , have a good day. Good build .

"Properly made, a permanent log shelter is strong, well able to withstand winter storms." But will it make it survive the bugs and summer heat and humidity? You seem to have an awful lot of wood in direct contact with the ground. otherwise, a good sturdy build.

Hello Bushcraft Mood, thank you for all your exciting videos. So, if I understand correctly (correct me if I am writing errors) your structure is anchored approximately to two living trees? (or is the structure free of any living anchoring?) I'm trying to understand the basis of your construction. Thank you
@BushcraftMood
@BushcraftMood 3 жыл бұрын
Hello ! Indeed the structure is tied to 2 young oaks without affecting them (only tied with rope) and each pillar is buried at least 20 cm. I used a few nails only for resistance in case of very strong wind. Thank you for watching ! God bless you !

I don't know why more folks don't utilise existing trees for their uprights, I see it as Nature helping me out with the build and look for a 'scaffold' that's already there for me to appreciate.
