Bushcraft: Crayfish Trap & The Smoked Trout

I make a willow crayfish trap to catch the invasive Signal crayfish.
and smoke a Trout.
Signal Crayfish
The fishfarm downstream sometimes find a signal crayfish in their rists.
Signal crayfish is an invasive specie that outcompetes our seldom native crayfish.
It can spreads diseases which it can live with, but kills our native ones.
The Crayfish trap
In the beginning i started using some willow that is used for weaving, i didn’t store it correct and it became damp and dry, and damp and dry ect.
It broke when i used it. (i filmed the process when i hydrated it and started to use it, but deleted it when editing, becourse i use so little of it)
Instead i use green willow; White willow i think, anyway it is the best willow to use on the property. The problem with green willow is that it shrinks when drying and the weaving becomes loose, so i properly won’t be able to use the trap again. …but thats what i had.
At the time writing this, i have used another fishtrap for 5 days, and the one i weaved for 2 days. No crayfish. At the same time they have found 3 at the fishfarm. …Cody has ate them.
The Smoked Trout
I used way to much beech wood dust, there was only a little left in the bag so i used it all. The fish was bitter from to much dust, and i only ate what you see in the video. Cody ate the rest.
Cody
The black labrador is called Cody. He belongs to one of my best friends Tony, that has the fishfarm.
When Musen and me is at the site, Cody is with us. He loves Musen and me, and not least he knows i have food.
Cody is afraid of walking over the bridge.
Musen:
My dog eats raw chicken every night. Besides that she has dry food available all day.
Musen (the mouse) is a labradoodle
She is half brown labrador and half black/white toy poodle.
Her real name is Effie, but i only use that when her hearing is bad. ;)
Plet Mis
The cat lives at the fishfarm together with 15-20 other cats. But this one is not afraid of either us or the dogs. She is very attention seeking and as Cody, she knows i have food. She has just had 4 kittens, and they are becoming more and more tame as time goes. One day she was sleeping in the Hot tent, and she had one of them with her. I thought she only had one. And i called it Harry Mis, now that there is 4 they are all called Harry Mis at the time being, but that might change. …i don’t expect to have any mice living in the tent.
Color change
At some point where i have just finished the trap you can se the trees have changed color.
My tripod tilted and broke my lens (Canon LENS EF 50 mm. 1:1.4) It is the second i have broken in 1,5 year. I had to order a new lens, this time it became the cheeper and not as light strong: Canon LENS EF 50 mm. 1:1.4. It is cheeper but also more durable to being dropped. At the same time i had to get a new ND filter, as the old one didn’t fit the new lens.
Band Aid
I use a band aid at one point when weaving. At the same time i started to use a piece of wood to hit the willow with, instead of the backside of my leuku (knife)
…guess i dont need to tell more.

I totally agree with @the overlander utv! It's soothing and calming to watch, been saving your video's so I can binge-watch them on a relaxed Sunday ^^ Thanks, Søren, also thank you for the explanation in your description! Doesn't matter when some things don't work out as you planned, at least you tried, that's better than doing nothing. And btw, how is your shelter/fire cabin doing?? You had to move it and rebuild it. Also I had a good laugh @13:57 -> Musen is killing it ^^

(1960s) When I was a kid some old, rural guys would guard areas of flat, boggy, valley bottoms to encourage and copse willow trees to supplement their pensions- out grandfather had such a ‘withy garden’. The sticks would be used to support garden plants like runner beans and make baskets n stuff. A bill hook was called a patch hook and I thought it was called that because our g.father would use it to work his patch.

When you pulled that lid back I started salivating. Know exactly what that tastes like. Well done! For crayfish I found generally it's better if the fish or meat is a bit rotten. About the time it begins to stink (few days old)

It's fascinating seeing how much time it actually takes to make these ancient devices ! Our ancestors worked ALL day every day doing this sort of thing. Intimidating compared to our sedentary society. I love the design of that little veranda tent ! What an incredibly practical feature ! That smoked trout looked really GOOOOD 👍 Pity about the bitterness...
@humanistwriting5477
@humanistwriting5477 2 жыл бұрын
My friend, our ancestors worked less then the modern man. Hunter gather, living as a mountain man/ bush crafting only took me about a 16 to 20 hours a week working, on average But mixing the hunting and gathering with agriculture can shorten the work week further. We've managed to "high society" ourselves into a harder lifestyle!

Soren👍👍 Beautiful, pains taking construction of the trap, sorry the longevity will be short lived. Thought maybe there was reed grass at the river bank, now I know. Too bad about the invasive species, invaders show up every where it seems. Sometimes the camp just works against you, weaving the trap, smoking the fish, bandage etc., been there many times. Luckily we get to try again eh... Yeah, no rodents in camp with the tiny tiger around, cool that Musen and Cody get along with it. I still say as a woodsman/bushcrafter, you're at the top of the game. Camera lens..bummer...happens. Thanks for the work sharing the experience. Good health to all. See you next time.

The crawfish trap was absolutely amazing. If I could make something that cool I would be damned if I would throw it in the creek. Hang it up on a wall and show it off, yes. How do you learn to do all the outdoors things you do? Your videos are the most entertaining and peaceful for me, bar none. I sincerely wish you to take care of yourself and the family as I look at you as a true treasure. And the look when you pulled the trap was a true belly laugh! Priceless....

Even your fish trap is a piece of artwork in itself. You are a natural beauty maker of the forest. I’m sorry to hear it cost a little bit of your finger though! I hope it is not too sore. You found your cat friend again, how loving she is & a friend for musen, and the black Labrador, she is adorable. I bet the kittens are too! I cannot stand fish, or fishing, but still love every video you make. I’m sorry it ust have cost you a fortune in camera equipment recently & so frustrating too.
