large axe amzn.to/43NuFEw

dugout shelter with stone and brick fire inside. bushcraft shelter ireland ..in this video a built a under ground shelter using natural materials i find or dig up with exception of the plastic for the roof as it is very difficult to make a natural watertight roof everything else is from the surrounding area , this build took 6 days over the course of 6 weeks to allow time for bricks to dry ,hopefully there will be a part 2 coming soon ...

I too love watching these builds. I can watch them for hours and my anxiety melts away. But I don’t get why they so often build so little head room. If I was going to invest all that time I would make the ceiling tall enough that I could stand up fully in them.

@@utubeape I found that heavy rain tends to make groundwater seep in from the sides unless you wanna use good builders damp proof plastic sheeting on the inside walls as well . the roof is never a problem for leaking if you use good thick sheeting overlapped properly on solid support logs or similar & a turf covering over that. ive learned you need a wide 'skirt of damp proof extending a few feet outward all around you're shelter - this will direct the heavy rain further away from your shelter walls and keeps it a lot drier ....i also get the fire roaring well for a good while , whilst im messing about cooking & doin stuff outside the shelter, this dries it right out if it feels damp or cold & the heat from that lingers all thru the night , nice in the winter. the more of them you make , you get better and better at them especially when there a few mates together making them 👍👍🙂
@utubeape
@utubeape Жыл бұрын
@@endurance8910 thanks for that, I had guessed that extending the roof sheet for a couple of feet would help it stay drier inside, and I wondered about digging a narrow trench and feeding some of the overlap down there. DPM much better than the woven plastic tarps yes, but heavy. Do you know about rocket mass heaters? I thought maybe building that first then building the shelter around it, having the 'hortizontal chimney' part (made of cob) it under the bed, could be nice and warm in the winter because it would soak up so much heat and let it out slowly.
@endurance8910
@endurance8910 Жыл бұрын
@@utubeape ive never tried doing the rocket mass stoves but they sound good.......i just get a good fire on & my shelters are usually about 8 by 7 ft so they're easy to heat with a small fire - i use old gas bottles nowadays with an old cast iron drainpipe( for a chimney) going up thru the soil in the shelter wall . i weld or screw a door hinge onto the metal cut out at the front and there's a little door to shut when the fire is sweltering . i like the idea of a dpm lined little trench / gutter to guide the water away as well , good idea u could put gravel in it and cover that with moss to keep it all camouflaged - my main concern is keeping my shelters hid & just for me and mates i trust 🙂👍

Greetings, Take it from an old Native in South Dakota, you done damn good!! I live and grew up on the smallest reservation in South Dakota, lived off nature since the day I was born. Being close to the world you live in makes life complete. I think the cities take something of nature out of people and we are people of nature, it's natural, not trying to be funny. Thank you for the great video, I love your design it's nice and cozy. Ohan Mitakuyaoyasin ( we are all related)

Nice job mate. 👏👏. Every time I see these dug out vids I am thinking what are you going to do with any ground water that comes in and around the front door area, your plastic sheet on the roof will run any water off to the sides and it looks like your stone gravel path will act as a French drain and take any rain water down the slope. Impressive 👍
@PaddysBushcraft
@PaddysBushcraft Жыл бұрын
Any time you dig a hole in the ground water is a risk even with drains I think the key is the location this whole area seems to be well drained .I was there last week after 4 days of rain and its still dry ..too my surprise 😂😂 thanks for taking the time to comment and for watching 👍

What a great build! The clay with stones inset into it looks a lot easier to work with than splitting wider limestone or other rock you can fracture (just a lot more work to split rocks) then filling gaps with clay. I like the look of it too! Ever put anything over the top of the chimney to prevent snow or rain from coming in? There was another bushcraft channel I watched yesterday and the builder lashed some wrist sized lengths of stripped saplings together, then put hand mixed clay over the top. He then used it as a lid with narrow spacing between it and the top of the chimney for the smoke to escape. I had never seen that before, but it made a lot of sense when I saw it. I love that you used the modern ice & water shield for the chimney! I'm always interested in traditional methods, but damn, why not use modern technology where you can??

Brilliant build! Something occurred to me when you found the white clay and then built your fireplace: white clay is used to make the lining of kilns and furnaces, refactory qualities mske it ideal for this, so maybe worth thinking about making some thin bricks and forming a full white lining to the fireplace and chimney, perhaps a kiln to fire bricks properly too at some point!

Thanks pal 👍 I've definitely got plans for kilns and pottery a little bit further down the road have to practice first .never fired clay successfully before.thanks for feed back 👍👍

Great video. Even better to see you back on the real dairy... (in a big way). I thought I saw you drinking alcohol there, but I must have been mistaken. Keep up the good work. Pine lintel in your fireplace? Not the Paddy I know. What's wrong with a brick arch, after making all those bricks? Looking forward to seeing the short, where you change it out. Brick igloo?

That was great man. What a lovely place. I love the different textures of the walls. The door sucks tho. haha If you put plastic on the roof you might as well put it on the walls too. lol I get it, the roof (like the door) is hard. The sticks needs to be more tightly packed, shave them a bit flat. Could hammer some grass between them. When building anything I'm always quite dense about putting the materials as close to their destination as possible. The bucket can go much closer to the wall. If you have to grab plaster many times the extra meters take a lot of time and effort. There is enough to do already! Thanks for the video

Interesting and in some ways relaxing to watch, but it would have been more interesting to see this whole build being done without the use of PLASTIC! Recommendation: if you can, please build such shelter that would reflect medieval times. ;)

Great work, lovely build. But I was wondering, shouldn’t there be a little roof over the chimney? Otherwise, the fireplace will be soaked once it starts to rain more.
