Great video, tons of info and a ton of options.There is something very attractive about a flat stove taking up very little space in a pack.

Good review. I bought the XL Ti very early after its launch. I had been undecided whether to go for the BB or the FB but I was sold on the Ti and it forced me to bite the bullet. Years later, I still admire the bravery of BE to go ahead with the Ti version when FB wouldn't but I do have some reservations. At 6:00 you introduce the baseplate (better named than BE's own "multifunctional case"). To be honest, I think that this is a marketing ploy from BE, to introduce a fix for the warping problem. 147g, fully 30% extra overall!, for something sold on its weight saving virtues. Their sales blurb talks about it being a " kitchen cutting board", a fireproof dry surface for preparing feathersticks and a stable base in sand and snow...... Really??? I bought the XL for 3 reasons, the ease of deployment, the light weight and the big feed port. This last, is, I believe the source of the BB warping problems, due to asymmetric heat expansion. The baseplate provides the guide and clamp to contain and correct any warpage in the feedport plate and its opposite trivet holder plate. Personally, like yourself, I've had minimal distortion, because I've used the XL as advised. Perhaps if BE had cut the feed port oval instead of square, there'd be fewer problems? On the 2 hinged plates right at the top, there are a couple of drilled eyes. Are these for hanging wires? In a wetland perhaps? Thanks again for a thorough review and I'm really looking forward to the Gen 2 / XL shootout when you can get round to it. Paul

I can see you point about the baseplate not being all that great to carry. I have not used it as a cutting board but have found it useful on top of snow but importantly, it does help with embers that fall out the feed port. Of course, so would a piece of aluminum foil. Thanks for commenting

Very neat unit. Bushcraft Essentials have certainly tried hard to create enough options to have you work full-time to explain them all. As a flame 🔥 video lover I keenly await your next video.

Thurough review. I would think if loading it up with briquettes doe not cause warping a Swedish fire torch shouldn't. Firebox Steve sure inspires lots of people. Waiting for part 2.
@jimf1964
@jimf1964 3 жыл бұрын
Steve and the firebox are unbeatable. All I could think of, for every feature, is the firebox does that exact same thing, and often better. I e thought often about the high feed or low feed, and I think Steve hit it right on. The loser feed helps with a chimney effect, but the high feed of this will let heat escape, or be unfocused. Man, my firebox is like hotter than fire.

@@jimf1964 I totally agree, my Firebox stoves provide me with everything I need. Not sure if you have seen the "Kettle Camping" KZbin channel. What that guy does with his Firebox is AMAZING. I have watched many of his videos several times and learn something new each time. How flattering for Steve to see so many stove manufacturers attempting to copy his stove.

Thoroughly enjoyed your informed, detailed account of how flexible these stoves are. Please can you tell us what was the 'sweet spot ' diam. of the stainless steel tent pegs that you demonstrated as supports? It looks like a 4mm diam.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
The rods I used in the video are about 3mm. The holes in the XL are just over 5mm. I think anything over 4mm may be too big if you want to use them to support a Trangia. Thanks for commenting

Well Mark, I'm sure you've anticipated this comment, but....all I see is what the firebox can do, and has done for a long time....but less. The proof will be in the testing. I do like this product though, and I thought long and hard before deciding on my second firebox. For the nano, if nothing else, I went with firebox because it folds. I'm sure everyone will be happy with either, but for the most performance, it won't beat firebox.

That's also what I was thinking. Its design seems very similar to the Firebox design, but with a few improvements. Still, overall they are very similar designs. I've been curious about that, since they're as far as I know the only two wood stove designs that fold up rather than disassemble for packing.

If you could only buy one... would buying a XL over LF be more useful/worth it even as a solo camper? I mean other than larger fire, convinence of feeding wood/twigs leff often?

I think the smaller stove will suit most people, especially if you do not plan to cook things like steaks which need a wider surface area. Thanks for commenting

definitely a good attempt to copy the firebox stove, but doesn't cut it. i still prefer the firebox as you dont get the gaps in the side walls by grate when open, and the metal is sturdier. firebox stove recommends the swedish torch method, which this stove recommends not to do for fear of warping.
