Don't see a lot of canoeing videos in the bushcraft community, good to see it. If ash is none existent in the area you in other species can work, too. I don't have a lot of ash but spruce work well, it grows long and consistent in its length, for the most part decent strength too. Log drivers used poles for moving up river, most likely picked up from the French traders and natives.

downeast primitive skills right on man. Ash, Spruce, Fir and the likes are good. Im guessing anything along the banks of a river were used, as the trees close by arent fighting for sun and typically grow straighter. Thanks

I usually make a pole when I fish the river. walking stick, poking stick, fire stick. tackle untangling stick. I use a carpenter's hatchet because it is usually along with me. The one I use has a 3 1/2 inch cutting edge tomahawk style with a hardened hammer poll section. 10 bucks at the hardware store. Things tend to end up in the river when I go fishing. I dont take my expensive gear to that location.

My friend makes a "switch" every time we go out a small alder sapling about half to 3/4 inch about four foot in length . We always laugh about it but we are always surprised with what it can achieve

Good thing to pass along to those who only know about paddling a canoe. The poling tradition is not as deep-seated here in the upper Great Lakes as it is in the Northeast, except with guide boats on certain trout streams. Any particular tips on drying the green pole so that warping is minimized? For a hiking stick, I'd hang it from the narrow end, but with that long a pole, will simply standing it as straight as possible be enough?
@sargefaria9 жыл бұрын
Random Button Pusher Thanks man. If you could lay the pole flat somewhere, that would work...opposed to standing it up, or hanging it.

I've had a pole curve on me drying it flat -- perhaps taking care to rotate it regularly would help.

The only thing that could have made this video better would be you shaking the ash pole while shouting "shake some ash, shake some ash" Although, it did involve you shaving your ash, which is also good :)
