Bushcraft Survival Australia

7 жыл бұрын

This presentation gives a brief overview of the Australian bushtucker - the Wild Parsnip. It details how to locate, identify, harvest and cook one of Australia's tastiest wild foods.
The video is presented by Gordon Dedman, founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA). Gordon has travelled extensively and completed numerous Survival and Bushcraft Courses worldwide at schools run by Ray Mears, Dave Canterbury, Lofty Wiseman and Bob Cooper.
Gordon is a former member of the Australian Army 1st Commando Regiment and is presently a survival instructor in NORFORCE, an Australian Army Reserve Regional Force surveillance unit.
NORFORCE conducts patrols in the remote areas of Northern Australia, working closely with Aboriginal communities.
Please follow all safety procedures when lighting fires outdoors and always adhere to the laws and guidelines set down by your State or country of origin, governing fire lighting.

I am growing Yam daisy or Murnong, I tried a tuber and whilst nice and crunchy I am not a big fan of the Flavour, currently also growing Chocolate Lilly of which I have one plant and waiting for more seeds to plant. I also have an apple berry which is currently in flower and doing extremely well. I planted a few others whose names I forget which haven't progressed very far.

could you do a video on shelters and good natural resources to use in Australia
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia 7 жыл бұрын
Its definitely on the to do list. I have made many shelters over the years but only taken pictures. Shelter building is very time consuming compared to other skills, so as soon as i find some time in my busy schedule i will get onto it.

Could you do a video on the fire hardening process for the digging stick please? Also your digging sticks doesn't seem treated with emu oil?

I will try to get around to your request at some stage. Time is something I don’t have a lot of and filming and editing is extremely time consuming. My digging sticks are not treated with oil. Thanks for watching

Greetings and salutations from the US, I was wondering if you have water hemlock down there as we do here? It can look a lot like wild parsnip and wild carrot (i.e. Queen Anne's Lace) and is poisonous. I am often curious about the flora and fauna of other places.
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
I am vaguely familiar with that plant but it is not native to Australia and if it does occur in places (which I have not seen) it has been introduced. I have seen it in the UK where it also grows. Thanks for tuning in and greetings from Oz.

Are there any poisonous plants that could be mistaken for this ? That is always my concern when foraging wild food plants, yet no one seems to address it in these types of videos.
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia 3 жыл бұрын
The wild parsnip (Trachymene incisa) is a member of the Apiaceae family (cellery, carrot, parsley...also known as Umbellifers). There are poisonous members of this family world wide so positive identification is key, but in the area where wild parsnip grows it is quite distinquishable due to its toothed like leaves. Positive ID is always key. Always collect the whole plant, roots and leaves so that it can be positively identified. If in doubt, leave out! Rather than worrying about which are the poisonous look alike's which often there are not, worry about identifying it correctly in the first place. Purchase as many plant ID books as you can and cross check. Hope this is of help. Thanks for watching.

The wild parsnip (Trachymene incisa) is a native plant and is also known simply as "yam". It is also classed as a perennial herb.Some books it can be found in include; Wild Food Plants of Australia by Tim Low, Native Plants of the Sydney Region by Allan Fairley &. Philip Moore and Burnum Burnum's "Wild Things".

Younger ones are generally more juicy. Cooked in the ash for 5 minutes or blanching them for a few minutes also softens them up, depending on their age. Thanks for watching.

looking about you tube trying to find channels I can learn from, found yours and believe I can gain knowledge from your channel. I always try to meander about my subscribers list of their subs, always a great place to start. Plus it is a great way to try to promote and spread my channel across you tube as well. Subbed your channel and hope that you find the time to come over and check out mine as well.

I love your content, but I have to say your continued reference to Aboriginal people, culture, knowledge etc, in the past tense is quite disturbing. There are thousands of First Nations people on this continent who continue to use these tools etc. And I'd be surprised if a lot of your knowledge doesn't directly derive from those people who are themselves still using those tools and knowledge.
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia 5 жыл бұрын
I work quite regularly with First Nations people in Norforce as well as time spent with aboriginal people in northern Australia. Up north many plants and traditional skills are still being used but this knowledge and practise in some areas is fast diminishing. Aboriginal culture (on the whole) was destroyed by white settlement in the south east of Australia and sadly much knowledge and traditional skills along with it! Many plant books published today, (eg. Wild Food Plants of Australia, Aboriginal Plants Use, Bush Foods of NSW, Useful Plants from Temperate Australia etc) even quotes used by First Nations people themselves use words and phrases in past tense...”used, made, used to, cooked, etc. Aboriginal people I have learnt from even refer to “the old ways” and “we used to do this” or “ my parents used to use this for that! Sure, many plants and skills are still used up north in areas where aboriginal culture is still intact and knowledge strong but on the whole much of that knowledge and skills are sadly being lost. Whether past or present tense is used, acknowledging where that knowledge comes or came from is the most important thing 🙂
