Bushcraft Survival Australia: Raised Jungle Shelter
This how to video shows a raised jungle shelter that was built in 2014 and how it was constructed using a raised platform, lean-to framework and thatched with dead cabbage tree palm fronds.
The video is presented by Gordon Dedman, founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA). Gordon has travelled extensively and completed numerous Survival and Bushcraft Courses worldwide at schools run by Ray Mears, Dave Canterbury, Paul Kirtley, Lofty Wiseman and Bob Cooper.
Gordon is a former member of the Australian Army 1st Commando Regiment and is presently a survival instructor in NORFORCE, an Australian Army Reserve Regional Force Surveillance Unit (RFSU). NORFORCE conducts patrols in the remote areas of Northern Australia, working closely with Aboriginal communities.
Please follow all safety procedures when lighting fires outdoors and always adhere to the laws and guidelines set down by your State or country of origin, governing fire regulations.

I bought Richard Grave's book, simply called "Bushcraft", as a teenager back in the mid 1970's. I was surprised to hear Les Hiddins say he had no idea who Richard Graves was (Paul Kirtley Interview). Much of his techniques, firemaking, rope work, raised fire altars, navigation (Southern hemisphere of course) etc, are applicable globally, yet, Les never heard of him till Paul mentioned him. Good stuff as always, Gordon. Cheers!

I know, I was very surprised as well! Richard Graves' 10 Bushcraft books are listed as a reference in the current Australian Army Survival Pam. Thanks for watching.

Another great video! Than you! Gordon, I was wondering about practising building these shelters in the bush. Could you please inform viewers here in the comments, or, even better, in a separate video, what is permissible in state forests and national parks. For example, was this built in either of the above or on your own land? I think a lot of your viewers would value your comments. Thank you. Keep up the good work - love your channel!

Thanks for the great feedback. That is a very good question and a very relevant one. These were build on private property. There is a difference between what you can do in a state forest and a National Park. State forests are much more lenient with what you are able to do, however you do need to obtain permission first. I will outline this the next time i do a shelter video. Thanks again for your comments.

Thanks for the feedback. The dead cabbage tree stalks last a long time….sometimes longer than the framework! Dead stalks are also good because you are only taking what is dead anyway.

Awesome video as always mate. I was just wondering what you used for cordage, in a shelter like this. From experience, regular paracord eventually perishes when exposed to the elements. Interested to learn what you use that lasts so long, especially in a load- bearing setup such as the raised bed. Any help appreciated, thanks again

When building natural shelters I only use natural cordage. The cordage used here was the ribs and outer layer of cabbage tree palm stalks (Livistonia Australis) which have a natural veneer type coating to them which helps them last longer. Thanks for watching.

Hi Gordon, ive just started out at having a crack at bushcraft and found you're videos very helpful. Do you only use dead/fallen wood for you're shelters? just started a shelter in NSW (south-east coast area) and I am struggling to find lengths of dead wood that are long and thick enough to make the framework out of and dont want to be cutting too many trees down. Any ideas for other thatching that I could use for my area?
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia 5 жыл бұрын
I try to use dead fallen branches as much as possible, and if I have to cut something i choose something that i can use for a variety of purposes and from an area where there are lots of them. You need to be selective and choose a shelter to build based on you needs and what resources are available. If in short supply then maybe it’s not appropriate to build a shelter at all! There are various methods of thatching but it depends on the resources you have. Richard Graves’ book “Bushcraft” has a variety of thatching methods for Australian plants and conditions.
