Hello Des, I see that you're wearing a Swazi coat, I live 20 mins away from the levin factory here in NZ, very good coats. I agree with you on the subject of fire lighting, we learn from a very young age about bushcraft, especially fire lighting. bowsaw and flints are good to know about, ( I still teach it) but why struggle when we have modern means, I always carry a hip flask full of kerosene, (well labeled, I might add) and I pour some over the unlit fire and let it soak in for a while, then I light it and it never fails to blaze into a roaring fire. When I saw your fire in the first stage, I make a little shelter out of green ferns over it, this keeps the rain off and gives the fire a chance to grow. I have been teaching bushcraft and survival for 50 years and still doing it, when it comes to pack weight, I have just got back from a four-day camp where I carried just on 25kgs, this is not bragging but common for me to carry such weight, it has been a lifetime of conditioning, and I don't recommend it for anyone, not use to it. You will seldom see a true Kiwi in the bush with long pants on. we prefer shorts, legs dry quicker and we wash our dirty knees in the streams. That's my two-penny worth. Enjoyed the video. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺

Fire by friction, bow drill, flint n steel are to be learned and practiced for those just in case moments and for fun too, it’s good to have these skills. But a Bic and a fire steel much more convenient and makes more sense on a day to day basis, my fire kit is pretty extensive/several methods to produce ignition/fire. This is common sense, it’s good and fun to have the primitive skills in reserve knowledge IF needed. IF needed. That’s just me though. Great video as always Des

I was making bow drills, in boy scouts Des. It is good to practice. But, I have been in situations. Where fire had to be immediately. So no holds barred. But couch campers, don't know that. Lol Cheers 🍻 mate.

I was being really patient watching you and then you had to bring out the Vaseline and cotton wool. A true Bushcrafter like myself would rub the stick up my butt cheeks until I had red hot embers and then light a submerged log from the river. Tsk tsk People like you and welsh Rob, give true Bushcrafters like myself a bad name. Shame on you Desmond of the Catty family. 🐻👊🔥

I start damp wood with Vaseline& cotton balls, or I’ll use an oz of methanol. It’s good to know other methods but if conditions are shitty it pays to have a quick method of fire lighting
@descattysBushcraftbydescattys7 ай бұрын
All good points mate 👍

Totally agree on lightning fires, the quickest way is always best, I always carry a means to light a fire so I never have to rub sticks. I have practiced the old bow drill in the past and still do from time to time but most times a lighter and a little fire starter is the order of the day. I've tried a few titanium things but to be honest I much prefer stainless much more robust.👍🏻 I still have my original Pathfinder stainless steel cup and bottle from when he first brought them out, still going strong.
