Is the top of the oven on the right way round? Normally the chimney is at the rear to draw air in the front across the fuel and out exhaust out the back.

Try putting the roof of your heater with the tube to the rear; that way, the air will draw along the wood and burn hotter. Also, cut some thinner tree limbs and put them on the floor to stop you from standing in wet mud. Cut your firewood from dead-standing trees; the wood will be drier than the wood off the forest floor.

Thanks for posting this. Very cool. "The snow was white everywhere". Yup snow IS white - I haven't seen snow any other color outside of the dreaded "yellow snow"- don't put that in your cooking pot. Waterproof boots and an extra pair of dry socks. Try to get off the ground for future sleeping. Hamock or folding cot. Hot pasta meals matter. If you plan to come back to this spot at some point later, leave a small pile of cut up wood, under a trash bag, weighted down for quick fire starting in damp conditions.

When I don't use a long pipe, there's no need for the chimney to be on this side or that side. It doesn't matter. Because I wanted to direct the smoke inside.
