MTech knives at Amazon
amzn.to/2mVzRlT
I've always avoided Mtech knives like the plague. For that matter I've always avoided any 440 stainless knife. I got sucked into the fanboy craze and bashed these knives like everyone else. Then... I started researching knife steels for some of my videos. The more I learned about 440, the more I started to consider other knives. So as an experiment I bought 3 M-tech blades to test out. I found 2/3 of these knives to be an absolute bargain and massively underestimated. Some of the Mtech fixed blade designs are very nice blades. So in this video I discuss these 3 knives and why I think they are absolute value leaders in the $10-15 range. I think these knives are amazing for light use or as backup knives. Although they may not take the abuse better crafted knives, I think these guys can handle anything a normal user can though at them. I really think your average user can happily use m-tech knives rather then spending hundreds on dollars on the newest cool tactical and survival knives. These are great budget knives. I would definitely purchase more of the Bowie and dagger designs.

LMAO I love the way you said if you stuck that in someones gut they couldn't tell if it was 440 steel. Probably more funny to me because I instantly pictured someone getting stabbed and just asking what type of steel is in there stomach.

if it kills the enemy then it works, I broke plenty of tips off of military issued bayonets in my Army time using it for things it wasn't made for, as long as it can go thru muscle and a little bone it's fine. those ppl think cause it's not the strongest steel made or if it can't chop down a tree need to rethink the purpose of the tool. if you want to chop a tree use an axe

I mean, MTech has done right by me. Pretty good knives for what you pay for them. Far as steel goes, I don't abuse my knives. I use a knife the way the Lord meant for a knife to be used. I'm not cutting steel with a pocket knife, I'm cutting simple stuff like cardboard and rope. So it does what I want to to do. Really, I can't complain. As far as being made in China, not too relevant to me, long as it cuts.

@Omer Ahmed lol, mentioning god and knowledge in the same sentence ... Okay. Some creatures probably before apes noticed if you break a rock it shatters into pieces some of which have sharp edges and those could be used as a weapon or a tool for a variety of tasks. Which part exactly are you asserting required divine intervention from a floating invisible man in the sky who speaks to you telepathically at night even though you can't hear him all of which goes against all the knowledge man has accumulated about how the world works and has not a single shred of evidence to support it ... Do you know what parsimonious means?

Personally I own a few M-tech knives, but I also have a few Gerbers and Bucks, and a Kershaw. I own a Bowie and Boot style knife, I also carry 2 Tanto folding combat style blades. Personally I rank their knives pretty highly. To me most of these would make good self defense or EDC knives. They are very well built and nicely sharp, and if youre using your knife for self defense every day to wear down the edge you live in the wrong neighborhood.

I own two Mtech knives. One of them I have used across the Australian Outback. It did very well. The other, I gave to my son, who uses them for camping and roughing it. It also works very well. You get what you pay for, but in this case, I got good quality for a really good price. In cost benefit and cost effectiveness terms, these knives score very well indeed.

Not long ago, my husband and I purchased the Raptor. We are on approximately three acres in Florida and along with a few Tramontina 18" machetes, the Raptor has done very well. Was very sharp out of the box and even after cutting palm leaves and other vegetation, it was fine. I cannot answer for other Mtech products but the Raptor we purchased has been great!

I know that when I was a kid growing up on a farm we had two already ancient machetes that we used to do various things. We never oiled the blades or even sharpened them. Left them in the snow, mud, rain and everything else. They always did their jobs and I'm guessing cost about five bucks at the hardware store.

I have a bunch of Mtech fixed blades and folders. I like to collect them and it turned out that some of them are quite solid. They're the pick of the draw. I have no problem with them being cheap because I'm not a hunter nor a camper. For self defense and light duty they'll do well. Some of the higher end models are 440C steel which is good steel for the money. I have a few of those. I like em. There are times I don't want to carry my HK Turmoil so I have a choice.

440 has the capability of being an awesome steel if its properly heat treated. It does get a bad rep because many manufacturers don't do a very good job, and the performance suffers as a result. If they heat treat it too much the blade becomes brittle and can break, too little and it is too soft and wont hold an edge. IMO heat treatment is more important to quality than anything else. But no way of knowing how good they did until you test it ou.
@MrBluesluver

Funny. People hate on 440 steel, but love Buck HC 420. Regardless of good heat treat, 420 is still 420 and, with the same heat treat, 440 is still a bit better and not many years ago was considered decent knife steel. Good video anyway. I like some of these MTech's. Besides, I wouldn't cry losing one of these like I would a $50+ knife.

I only have two Mtec blades. a folding throw away that is nice and reliable. I also bought from a gun show, the Mtec Marine Corp knife. I have mint and used Ka-bars, but this Mtec is a good look a like, the cap is screwed on instead of pressed on. Could come unscrewed, which I have read about on other reviews. The blade is stamped with MT-122 Stainless. Not carbon steel, but has a nice edge out of the box. Like the author said, these are backup blade, use them, break them, chuck them in the trash. The sheath is cheap leather but will do the job. Overall, a 5 on the 1-10 scale, looks pretty, will not depend my life on it.

I have two Mtech knives that I got for a great deal at the flea market. They were new with a sheath and a LED flashlight. One of the knives is a lock-back folder with a quick release stub to use to flip open the knife. The blade has good thickness and durability. The other knife is a fixed blade knife. The blade is quite thick with no chance of breaking. I sharpened the factory edge off and removed the cheap handles which I will replace with cherry or Hickory. I expect good things.

For the average user cheap/inexpensive knives are the way to go. For EDC or campground camping you can't beat a budget knife: "lost" (stolen) or broke you aren't out much. If you have the spare cash buy better, but I doubt the average user will be in a real combat or survival situation. If you are going into war or a 3 day hike buy the appropriate knife, if not cheap is just fine.

The reason why people usually roll their eyes at a 20 dollar knives is the heat treat. 9 times outta 10 if you are charging 20 bucks or so for a blade then most people with common sense will realize that it has a funky heat treat. To put a really good heat treat on a blade runs about 15 dollars per unit. I happen to think that 440c is a decent steel especially when you give it a great heat treat it can be quite good indeed just like Bucks 420HC with the Paul Bos Heat Treat, but a 20 dollar blade is not gonna have a great Heat Treatment and thats where it falls short.

Also 440 is the softest steel, if you perfectly heat treat 440 and do the same with 8cr13 or vg-10 the latter two will always produce a better blade.

I survived 6 months in the jungle with a 9 dollar m tech knife. they are good knifes if you know how to touch up the blade once a week.i trusted my life with one and I am still alive. most people would never put their 200 300 dollar knife through the punishment I put my m tech through and I have a 5 dollar master knife that is just as good.

440 holds an edge as well as aus8 or a few others steels reviewers say is mid level steel . Most daggars are thin light easy to stick .and most you can break easy .

i have 1 MTech in my collection, a 13 inch stiletto. it's decent, the steel's good, stays sharp, but after many an opening/closing the blade gets a little loose for my liking, and find myself reaching for the wrench every few times i pull it out.used to keep it under my pillow for self defense until i got an 11 inch fixed blade black Frost Covert Mission Fighter. It's an inexpensive knife itself but I'd trust my life to a thick, fixed blade military style knife over a long flimsy toothpick

440 can be great ... The GERBER BMF, was and still is, for the happy owners, a great and unique knife. It was from the time when Gerber was made in America.

I'm a knife collector, I two mtech knives a ka-bar and a copy of a cold steel recon 1, I have BARELY used these knives the kilt wiggled off on the ka-bar, and thy thing will not hold an edge, the cold steel recon one copy also refuses to hold an edge and the tip broke instantly when I tested the durability. I would rather get gerber if you want something cheap, I prefer kershaw or sog for the average knife guy

I just bought an Mtech fixed blade knife, a big, thick, heavy bastard. even if it was dull it is still heavy enough to brain somebody with it. No it doesn't hold an edge very well and I haven't tried battening with it but I'm pretty sure it could stand up to a good beating. I'm also pretty sure it would NOT hold up against a strike to the flat of the blade. I would probably use this as a base camp knife until it broke and save my Cold Steel or Ka-Bar for tasks that really matter but I still think it was worth the $50 I paid for it. I wonder if I could blacksmith weld it to a piece of high carbon steel and get it to fold a few times and reforge it into a better blade? Any thoughts? please don't act like a prick and bag on my question, it's just a question.

In my opinion they're combat/tactical/defensive knives that's all. Their fixed blades are strong but with soft steel, same for the folders, they're reliable, strong and with a decent lock. On the other hand, steel is very soft. But for stabbing and cutting flesh and skin, it will do it.

Mtech is the Shizznet buddie and you get a bunch for so so little ,buy them and collect them as they have many designs so much better then other and a few not worth being bothered with , but all companies have those.

I dont know much about MTECH knives, but I ordered their Extreme Fighting knife. Full tank with G10 slabs for $25. Its also the 440C steel. I guess when it comes, I will put it to the test. My Schf9 is my go to knife since it has been beaten to hell and still in good shape, having a knife for other purposes like pretend to be Rambo(lol), or just as an emergency, or a loaner. Never have too many knives!

The self defense dagger is garbage but the blade is ment for a stab and run not to be used again that is why it is so thin and sharp

Watching some of the videos on these budget knives has people beating the crap out of them and some of these knives actually hold up well. So I guess having a few of these knives in your collection is good. Especially if you have a "beater" type job to do, I notice a lot of people will grab for this kind of knife because they don't want to put a scratch on their $200 knife.

440c is a decent knife steel WHEN PROPERLY TEMPERED. The Early Buck knives were 440c and well-tempered, and made Buck's reputation as good knives. Paul Bos -tempered Bucks were really second to none back in the day, and were to my knowledge highly prized in the later years of the Vietnam War...

ya know, I here you about the cheap gold knives, but my experience with cheap gold is that it usually is fool's gold. for me, there is no "light use knife", it's gotta be something I could trust my life to. I don't have a problem with that since I can make my own knives, but still, all the knives I use have to be tough and able to stand up to heck.

I don't buy the smaller Mtech knives. I have the Mtech Xtreme Raptor and this knife is The Best knife I have ever owned. This knife is proof you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a more expensive knife such as Becker, Ontario, etc. The Raptor aka MX-8070 is the most Badass knife you will ever behold. instead of doing old mtech knives, you should review the Raptor Bowie, I doubt you will have anything to say about it.
