In this video I compare 3 what I would call all around utility knives. One of the 3 has a major failure!
Oerla Knives OLK-D45 - www.amazon.com/Knives-OLK-D45
Gerber Gear Prodigy - www.walmart.com/ip/Gerber-Gea...
MTech Evolution Fixed Blade Knife - MTE-FIX009M - www.amazon.com/Tech-MTEFIX009...

I own three Oerla knives, two fixed blades and one folder. I love them, their survival knife is attached to my go bag and the folder is part of my edc. I don’t think that you can beat the quality for the price that they sell at.

The Orela is on the to-buy list and so so is the Gerber. I was rooting for the M-Tech. I have a few M-techs and most have been good 'for-the-money' knives. I may grab all three of these knives and repeat your comparison on my channel. Great stuff here.

I have an MTech Xtreme fixed blade that's actually pretty decent. I got it for like $26 at SMKW. Supposedly it's 440C, & it actually says 440C on the blade. The blade is also very thick & strong. The MTech "Xtreme" line of knives are higher quality, & more expensive than the main line, which are just MTech USA. I would stay away from anything but the Xtreme line. All in all, the MTech Xtreme I purchased is a pretty good for it's purpose. I threw it in my tailgate w/ a magnesium bar & flint for an emergency.

Great review, I've now subscribed to your channel. Your review has convinced me to buy an OerLa fixed blade. These look like great knives, and it even kept up with and in my opinion surpassed the Gerber. I'll be watching your channel for more reviews. Keep up the good work.

Def gonna try an Oerla, I’ve seen em around. They have some good looking models! Shame about the M-Tech, I used to have an MT-080 I think.... I used it to dig up an entire pine stump once, 2 feet in diameter, all the way down into the roots (for Fat Lighter). Hammering, stabbing, chopping, prying, abusing the shit out of it! 20 bucks, didn’t harm it at all!! Been thinking about getting one again, still around the same price. Just an EXCELLENT beater for the price!! I hope the quality hasn’t gone down in general.....

Hey man, I had to rod and strop my Prodigy when I first got it so that's probably how they "all" come, right out of the box! And I remember your previous VS videos on the Leroy and the United Cutlery's Spartan sword. I had a couple "oh no's" when those blades failed cause I had already bought em BEFORE seeing your videos! Glad to Schrade did you right! Oh and that Prodigy, cuts as good as an "Oerla" now lol! Great video as always man. And my choice, of course the Oerla too!

It's a Japanese origin traditional style chopper which is notoriously better than kukri and other machetes. I would really appreciate if you would consider making a review or comparison video of that!

Up here gerber and benchmade are everywhere, they’re local. I’d say other than having to sharpen my strong arm it went through the paces daily for almost a year, But that not the prodigy. Edge retention on most gerber a aren’t very good. That oerla seems sturdy so I’d pick that next to see how it holds up to daily long term use. Great video

Been watching your videos, I love how you don’t get your opinions involved, not saying people who do are less in quality department when it comes to reviewing something, but it’s nice you give viewers the option to make up your own decisions/opinions. I do dislike you at the moment for introducing the orela brand to me b/c now I want to order yet another knife lol.

I've rarely received a Gerber with a good edge. I got one of their hatchets with a saw in the handle and the grind didn't even meet. But their grinds are typically pretty accurate, so it is easy to finish them up.

I'd pick the Oerla due to the D2 tool steel. Easy to sharpen and good edge retention. I was secretly rooting for the Mtech (since I have one) and I have no issues with it. The chinesium steel didn't hold up this time.

@cubancigarman2687

Cold steel contracts to many factories around the world. Some of their good products come from Taiwan. Cold steel for replica blades vary from style to style and are generally a lower cost item compared to other manufacturers. You have to do a personal research before buying any particular historical sword before choosing to buy any. Your Chinese war sword by cold steel probably came from a factory that made it for less and made cold steel more money than what it is really worth. However if you like folding knives and fixed blade knives, cold steel has many very good survival knives. Cold steel SRK knives are excellent for their cost(under $100). I have 2 cold steel tomahawk axes that the price was low, but I also have 3 Swedish axes for real axe work. There’s many KZbin channels that can help you further your historical sword collection in your sword endeavors. Good day and good luck!

John, I have one more comment. MTech are definitely cheap knives, & I wouldn't recommend them to anyone for any other purpose than self defense. However, there's a significant difference between MTech USA & MTech Xtreme knives.The Xtreme versions have higher quality steel. They won't compare to expensive knives, but they're actually pretty decent value knives. I own one, and I like it quite a bit.
@lostcat9lives322
@lostcat9lives322 Жыл бұрын
A fixed-blade MTech is an "urban survival" knife. It doesn't have to be tough, strong or have great edge retention. As a self-defense knife it has to retain its edge for all of maybe 15 seconds. If the cops steal it (and they will, cops are thieves) or it ends up in a street drainage system, you're out $25.
@DDDYLN
@DDDYLN Жыл бұрын
@@lostcat9lives322 agreed. However, be careful about fixed blade knives in you jurisdiction. Here in VA, we can conceal carry any length of folding knife. I have a Cold Steel Voyager XL with a 5.5" clip point blade. It's totally legal. As for fixed blade knives, of any length, they must be open carried, or it's illegal.

...and so ends Mtech's reign of terror. Kinda sad. 😐 I have a knife from Oerla (though not the model you showcase), and Im overall happy to back a recommendation; mine is EXTREMELY sturdy. If I had to offer criticisms, they would be twofold: a) the Oerla is, for its size, surprisingly heavy. Perhaps unnecessarily so. b) This is of course subjective, but to me the knife feels like it was designed, produced and assembled 100% ENTIRELY via algorithm and machine, with absolutely no work done by human hand. This results in a knife that feels immaculate and extremely precise, but lacking a bit of...artisanal grace. All that said, thank you for another good & informative video.

I have found that the Mtech Xtreme knives that are made from 440c Stainless are quite good. Im pretty sure this one in the video is a lesser quality steel. Thanks for the input on the Oerla blade. Always find your opinions well thought out and informative. Have a good one brother.

I’ve gotten several knives with very expensive names that were very dull right out of the box. Protech, Microtech, etc. etc. Just because it’s expensive. Knife doesn’t mean it’s left the factory with a sharp edge. I often believe that sometimes the coding dolls deny but that’s not the only thing. I think quality control and a lot of places are lacking.
@DDDYLN

It's not really fair to compare a thick spined D2 steel bushcraft to a Gerber 420HC, or MTech mystery stainless. That said, this video is eye opening, because I've never heard of Oerla before, & that knife is a fantastic value compared to overpriced Gerbers (sorry Gerber fans, but they're definitely way overpriced). Thank you very much for introducing me to Oerla. I'm going to pick one up before they triple in price. BTW, I use BladeTech Tek Lok's for my gun belt holsters. They're awesome. The fact that the Oerla comes with one, makes it an even greater value.
