Another tidbit of advice for beginners: don't get overwhelmed and don't overcomplicate it. There is no "perfect setup". The fact of the matter is, you will learn what does and doesn't work.

Good philosophy of the tools. It is easy to get hung up on knives. I know I'm guilty looking at knives, watching review's, and reading knife forums. Thanks for all the good videos this past year. Looking forward to more this year. Take care.🇺🇸🔪🔥🌲

73 years old and still learning. I'm going to give up my search for the perfect knife, pick one or two, store the rest, load up my saw and pick up an axe or two....

I agree with you..you're better off investing more on your saw and axe/hatchet. Very good video topic. When it comes to energy/calories burned, a good saw and axe are worth their weight in gold, especially if you are camping out in cold weather and need a lot of wood to get you through the night, or building a nice shelter. I actually like my Bushcraft Black, enough so that I own 2 of them ( one permanently rides in my pack as a back up). I have many "bushcraft" knives up to and including a custom that I paid almost $400 for ( I'm a collector ), but those expensive knives don't really do any better than the Mora. They look better, but they don't cut better notches or carve better feather sticks. They just allow me to be the best dressed guy in the woods, 🤣🤣🤣

Great comment! Whenever I look at my unused knives I also refer to myself as a collector. I used to say I was filling a niche when I went out and blew more money on a knife. That story went bye bye a couple knives ago. I now only buy cheap knives and refer to them as toys. Affection without pretense. My favorite if I had to pick one right now? Lt Wright lagom. Mora on steroids.

Great vid!👍🏻 I’m new to bushcraft myself but it seems the main takeaway I’m getting as a whole from all of you veterans is to focus on the essentials and basically “keep it simple”!🍻🔥

So what’s you’re thoughts on a large knife like the junglas and a saw ? I usually care e hatchet also but last outing I found the junglas and my saw to be efficient for firewood

Nice vid. I have expensive stuff including that hatchet and the silky saws. I like my lt Wright knives but don’t need every new one he comes out. I don’t get out much but like having them. As a prepper I have cheaper but decent backups. I suggest a video about the 5 essential by a guy named jediknightofthewoods. He goes through a similar decision making process. He concluded that if you only had one blade, it would be a hatchet not a knife. A hatchet could accomplish almost every knife function, but a knife could not perform most hatchet functions. If you’re in a situation where spare calories Count, a saw is also essential. Chopping wood takes a lot of calories. One piece of advice: get a spare handle for your hatchet and a spare blade for your saw.

There was a video made by lonewolf 902 which said a knife can achieve the same task as an axe especially for beginners. Thoughts?

Yes and no. There's a chance when you're starting out you're going to mess things up or break them. There's a Mora Heavy-duty I own I still wince when I see what was done to it. You don't always know what it is you prefer and what suits your environment and activities either. Someone who's hiking 15 miles to get where they're going will have different priorities than someone who can see their vehicle from their campsite. Then again, it can be easier to learn with decent gear. Learning to sharpen a cheap axe with a terrible grind is not going to do you any favours but you're one up in the skill department if you do succeed. It's nice to have that reliability factor in your kit decent gear may provide too.

Try cutting fat wood thats heavy with pitch with your Silky! The teeth load up and stop cutting. Then do it with a Laplander, the laplander does not load up and it keeps cutting. That said, I do have several bow saws that I use a lot!

The irony of buying and collecting expensive knives to go into the woods and operate on minimalistic principles and gear is pretty funny. Good quality tools are essential, but not something you need 10 of for the same purpose (a lesson I would do well to learn). Great video and argument

I wouldnt say BRKs are for more dedicated bushcrafters. Id say they are akin to jewlery for knife lovers. Haha, and even then, ive seen some dinasaur bone and mammoth teeth scales on some quality damascus steel which isnt any better and probably worse than a brk knife, but god do they look ostentatious

"Axes and hatchets do the lion's share of the work" Yet you don't really say why those two axes do this work, or what work it is (pointing to the wooden structures behind you). Now, those two axes weigh a pretty bunch; I'd guess around 4+ lbs? In my experience, a little hatchet like that is seriously limited in what it can actually accomplish, that my Cold Steel Trail Master cannot get done. So why add its weight? I would never use that other axe for felling trees or cutting trees into logs - just too many calories, and untidy end products anyway. I'd much rather use the Silky (but a Bigboy!). To split cut logs I'd rather use wedges and a baton (cut with the saw and TM) . Much more bushcrafty! You seem to favour Scandi grind knives, and that's fine, as personal preference is a major factor in selecting and using knives. For me I'd favour a CS SRK (sabre grind, in CPM 3V) or a Victorinox Venture Pro Bushcraft knife. So there you have it, my penny's worth! I'd love to hear your opinion! Cheers amte!
