A superb rendition. I've sung this version to my baby boy since he was in his mother's tummy and he still loves it at 2 years old. Beautiful

I've always preferred this gorgeous version to what I consider is a slightly dreary version on the so-called 'Original Sound Track' album. The film is one of the best films ever and the closest version of Hardy's original story.

The best movie version ever.Hidden Emotions, yearnings for love, most beautifully portrayed by magnificent actors and actress Julie Christie.As Bathseba, she is superb.A Lady torn between her reasons of being a independent woman with a strong men and her three suitors.Alan Bates and the other cast are gorgeous.The Soundtrack is lovely.A bit slow paced, but a 👍 great movie.

In the mid to late 60s, Julie mightve been the most beautiful lady on earth. Is this her actual voice here or is she dubbed?
@BeanUasal2 жыл бұрын
I had thought she was dubbed by Isla Cameron (because that's what it says on IMDb), but now I think it's Julie herself singing. Her tone is just too similar to her speaking voice, and I don't think Bathsheba's voice is supposed to be so polished as to require someone other than Julie to sing if Julie's voice is as fine as it is here. As someone else has commented, Isla Cameron sang on the album version and her voice is noticeably different: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKClkoxvi9l4orM

@@BeanUasal Of course, they always try to find great voice doubles who really sound like the person. For decades people assumed that Christopher Plummer did his own singing in THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

Compare this with the film soundtrack. I think you'll find this was sung by Julie Christie herself. And Alan Bates looks like he's actually playing that flute: at least, his fingers are moving to the right holes! Isla Cameron's voice is much higher, and more practiced, especially with the melismas!

Bathsheba had black hair.
@PeterOzanne2 жыл бұрын
If she was an historical character, I'd say yes, it should be black. For example, you couldn't, or shouldn't have Henry VIII or Elizabeth I with black hair in a film. But, since Bathsheba is imaginary, it doesn't really matter so much, does it?
@mandyg57475 жыл бұрын
Wonderful film and a lovely song but oh my goodness, could she not have sung a little higher? She sung it like a man.... Best version is the one by the BBC with Nathaniel Parker and Paloma Baeza. Dont watch the Hollywood version as despite fantastic actors they missed half the plot out!

@Jarred Knox I’ve always loved this song and I know that it’s not Julie’s voice but it kind of sounds like her
@PeterOzanne2 жыл бұрын
@@inertia2004 It is Julie's voice! I'm pretty sure. If you listen to the soundtrack version by Isla Cameron, you'll hear that the voice is much higher, different in character and pronunciation, and very practiced - especially the way she sings several notes on one word ("melisma")! And Alan Bates is actually playing that flute!
@PeterOzanne2 жыл бұрын
She has a typical woman's contralto voice, whereas the professional singer on the soundtrack version is a soprano - much higher. So, no, she probably couldn't have sung it higher. Also, it fits that key on the flute, B minor.
@Bella-fz9fy Жыл бұрын
Would have preferred it sung in a more regional ‘folk’ way.Why are English folk songs always slowed down and sung so precisely.I think they’d have sung it with more ‘flavour’ in the past.Still love it though!
