No one started Grime, it was a process that involved several factors, like most movements. Around 2001 the Garage scene was thriving but the sound was changing and crews like PAYG made it solely about lyrics and aggression whereas the prior generation was just about having a good time - it was about the music primarily. But more bassy, vocal-less tunes were appearing for the MCs, and the seminal Musical Mob tune changed the game and began the permanent shift towards these types of tracks, and MC-only type of vibes. On top of this you had the Heartless-PAYG clash which was huge, in addition to the growing beef culture in American rap (Jayz/Nas kicked it off over there as well) and the focus on MCs just carried on growing with more and more crews emerging. Before 'Grime' really had a name and before WIley got credited with everything because of Eskimo, the culture had already existed for a year at least.
@Nainocard9 жыл бұрын
What has Hip Hop got to do with Grime in that respect? You clearly have never seen Dancehall events like Reggae's Sting in the late 90's or the 2000's. Emcees like Gods Gift, Riko Dan, Flow Dan, Killa P etc had that Jamaican flow and Skepta even mentioned how he studied Ninja Man (KZbin him) at many Dancehall events. The term 'Grimey Garage' actually did come from Wiley when he use to write in forums on RWD Magazine when describing his sound. Pinnacle tracks of that darker transition of UK Garage to Grime are the obvious ones, Pulse X, Eskimo, Oi and Cha (by Plasticman) to name a few. Jamaican music has and will always have a stronger influence to British music.
@hurley319 жыл бұрын
The beef culture that was permeating through hip hop at the time was clearly being adopted in the UK scene as well, that's what I was saying, that it was an influence. Not sure what dancehall has got to do with anything, I never denied it's influence.
@Nainocard9 жыл бұрын
I'll give you that about you not denying Dancehall, but the whole clashing thing didn't come from Hip Hop. Remember Grime has strong Dancehall influences and D&B. More than Hip Hop because alot of the Grime emcees are of Caribbean descent or grew up on music like Jungle. Hip Hop did have an influence on Grime but not in the way you're stating. You should watch Reggae Sting events with Ninja Man vs Merciless vs Bounty Killer for example.
@A4ANT5 жыл бұрын
Nainocard - I remember “grime” coming after the demise of so solid when the garage scene had really died down. So solids era marked the start of the new sound / generation in garage, where you had less vocal house orientated tunes and it was more hip hop / baseline type songs with more lyrics. Compare the garage song Gabriel, to so solids ohh no.. where Ohh no was literally big in the garage scene when I was raving for at least a year+ before they got singed and it hit the charts. I remember big garage artists being unhappy with so solid bringing the “attitude” / grimier sounds to the genre... In my opinion grime originated from the demise of garage and then so solid...Grime was heavily brought to life with Wiley’s relentless instrumentals that just kept circulating around (when there was nothing else fresh coming out) and was used by the next generation of mcs. It was then cemented by Dizee Rascals rise to fame with the boy in the corner album which was the next set of youngsters after age group of the so solids etc

These posts are an interesting take on history and people's memory. We all know that this art form comes from Yard, but even that is questionable because you cannot exclude Rap from the debate. However. man HAS mentioned Pulse X. But no one HAS mentioned Musical Mob(NORTH WEEZY). I say this coz they made Pulse X and I think it just evolved from there. But one of the last points I'd like to make about grime is, East yutes pioneered the scene of grime, Wiley and a lot of the main contenders were all from the same area so there has to be a figure head of grime and it Must go to Wiley's Eski sound. It was rife in East. I am a House 'n' Garage hed and the truth is we didn't wanna know bout grime but da yungerz kept it going from all parts, N. S. E. W and have produced something the UK can be proud to be associated with. Big up all trail blazers... can't wait for the next interview and the Xmas special

S Kay Kind of, that grime sound was part of any graveshift UKG set on radio, it was just not mainstream.They would play that sound when they are warming up. The first version of grime I heard properly was Hoe by Dizzee Rascal and then Eskimo. Wiley and Dizzee both popularized grime and are responsible for the birth and both produced. Wiley held up grime through its whole life. Dizzee was instrumental in the early stages. No one even called it grime until Channel U days. It was known as Garage or 2Step riddims.

+Jamie Burnett It is technically black people slang. It's patwa. Because it's been spoken in places like London, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester etc for at least 40 years, there's a bag of white people from those areas who've been born & raised around it & so naturally are going to pick up elements of that dialect in their speech.
