Many people have an idea about living "off-Grid". The truth may be quite different. Living in a tiny cabin in interior Alaska for many of the last 20 years, I know a bit about what its really like.

I have a Ph.D in observing envious trolls and haters. There are people who actually DO something, and there are people who sit and assume the role of critic, which is way easier than doing something. There's always an ample supply of folks who can't tolerate anybody who doesn't conform to their own ideas.

23 years old, and you hit the nail on the head. I did feel like I was wasting my life when I was working 60 hours a week as a cook! I wanted something more, I want to build something cozy, make it beautiful inside and out, and have a family. Make technology a little luxury instead of it being so intrusive in my life. I find you so inspiring, I hope I get there one day.

"The pigs and chickens would roll off..." made me laugh so hard. Don't mind any negativity. You and Brooke are just doing fine and each of us has the own responsibility for living our own dreams (or decide against it for whatever reasons). You are not there to live other people's expectations. I enjoy both of your videos and am very fond about your wife's channel. We all can find our little nature islands, no matter how often and how intense, just nobody can make me do the first step. I have to do myself. And is it not wonderful being able to switch between offgrid and a life, where you enjoy more comfort? Why should it be either / or when it can be "and".

I dream of living off good one day and I hope to be able to have as many options as you and Brooke have in your off-grid adventures. Keep on doing your thing and don't worry about anyone else. Hi Dave, I found your channel through your wife's channel. When I was a teenager my family lied in an original log house from the 1800's. It was all one room, except for a small back porch. It had a bar that separated the kitchen from the rest of the cabin. We had an area for the dining table and across from that was a tiny living area. the rest of the log house was sleeping area. All six of of slept there. My sister and I shared an army bunkbed and so did my 2 brothers. My parents had their bed in the back corner. At night when we went to bed we all talked to each other. We had an outhouse in the back by a small barn where we had a milk cow and chickens. We cooked on an old cook stove and heated the log house with a wood heater. We only had cold running water from a well. The old modern convenience we had was electricity. It may not be "remote living" for some people, but until you live it yourself you can't judge. We grew very close as a family when we lived there. We washed out close in the back yard with an old wringer washer my dad hooked up with batteries. We ung our clothes on the clothes line. I don't regret my parents decision at all for moving there when our home burned in a fire. For showers/baths, the kids had showers at school after P.E. My parents bated in galvanized tubs we used with the wringer washer. It was a simple time in our lives we all remember fondly. :o)

that took my breath...you've experienced what many will not. my family life: we did have a bigger house: but so old; but i loved it, with the open fire in lounge and coal range in kitchen. for me being such a small child: having the long drop down bottom of section past the house and orchard: seemed like eternity to walk there and fairly freaky sometimes; when the creatures scattered about in trees and ground, branches scratched the walls and windows, but that is the way it was. my parents, us, and often others and our dog all lived in that house which still amazes me to this day how we coped. mum had a large vegetable garden so we ate healthy, farmer either sold, gave us fresh milk and my brother and i caught a duck...more don't have to live in whatever shape fancy expensive house when your life can be as happy or happier in homes we had.

I'm new to you and your wife's videos. Loved watching them all. I like being outdoors. Your honesty and capacity for the graft, to get you where you are, is more than evident to ANYONE who has even the SLIGHTEST appreciation of what you guys have worked so hard to achieve. Consequently, I was literally laughing my head off - when I wasn't shaking it in utter disbelief that is - that there are clearly, genuine eejits (...I'm Scottish but please don't hold that against me) out there, who would take offence at how you cook bacon and eggs! Honestly? They're obviously watching the wrong content. You can simplify your life without going to the extreme, to be totally off grid, unless it becomes necessary. To me, the key is preparing, testing and being ready if/when it comes to that point. Until that happens, I intend to enjoy my creature comforts, since there's no reason not to. I'm a 70 yr old, female, living in northern Mi on wooded acreage that has a mobile home, pole barn, and shed on it (I've also added a small travel trailer). I have two wells on my property, but also have earth straws to be able to turn them into hand pumped wells (if no electric) and a river nearby. To me, this is heaven on earth and I love it! I'm in good health, but not dumb enough to think I can handle building a cabin on my own, so I chose other ways to fulfill those needs. (I have a 50 yr old son, but he knows mom likes to do things on her own.) I bought this property a year before I retired in 2019 (took me 4 years to find the right place and I paid cash) and sold my site-built house in 2020. I periodically shut everything down for a few days or so, to test my systems, to see what needs tweaking and I see any disruption in power as an opportunity to do the same. I have backups for my backups and I mix modern backups, such as solar, power stations, generators, chainsaws and propane, with old school backups, such as oil, kerosene, charcoal, handsaws and wood. Some of my preps are over 100 years old and still work as intended. Some people will never get it, no matter how it's explained to them, but for those of us who do get it, my hat's off to you!

In the 80's, my grandma lived by herself in the mountains about 15 minutes outside a very small town called Front Royal, Virginia. Front Royal at the time was considered really remote for those of us living 50 or 60 miles away near Washington D.C. To me, it was remote enough. At night it was super quiet and no light pollution from any city, so you could see all the stars in the sky. My grandma had one neighbor in a house right next to hers, but the next neighbors were a quarter mile down the road. She had electricity and running water (from her own well), but she stocked up food to limit her trips into town. She used to freeze most of her food to make it last. So, my grandma wasn't "off the grid" or living as a caveman, but it was simple enough and remote enough so she could enjoy the benefits, but still get to town in 15 minutes if need be. I think most people can do the same as well. You don't have to choose between city apartment living or a Survivor man type of lifestyle. There are many ways to live and find your own happiness.

There is no power going to the cabin just a generator and propane tanks to help heat the water and cook. @Svetla Nikolova it can be very hard our first couple years here were very hard but we've dreamed up little contrivance has that helped us and there's a lot of good videos out there about contrivances in shortcuts that can be helpful and eat ultimately we purchased a small generator couple solar panels a propane stove and we even have a propane heater for backup it always saw chimney gets clogged or something like that so you know it's actually not as hard as it used to be and it's going to get easier with every new thing that we add. I'm not going to lie if you start with nothing I mean we started with a garden shed and a couple very primitive hand tools and that's it and if you start with nothing it is very hard indeed but it doesn't have to stay that way and if you have a little money it doesn't even have to start that way

I know this is an older video but I wanted to thank you for defending those if us that are doing what we can afford and what we can physically do. I'm 65, retired and had a small cottage built out in the woods. In order to find land that I could afford I couldn't get a lot that would work for solar, so instead I super insulated my house with double walls, triple pane windows, and R-60 in the attic. I hear with a wood stove, grow my own vegetables, and raise hens for eggs. I still cut, split and stack my own wood but I use and electric chainsaw and splitter. I use the electricity for lights and to run the well and my cooking stove runs on propane. It's just me and my 2 dogs out here but the way I have everything set up I hope to last another 20 years out here. My life is simple, I have as little impact on the environment as possible and I'm living my dream, modified to fit my age. I do wish I'd been braver 40 years ago but you can't regret the path you've walked. Keep doing what you do.

Off grid is noone knowing where you are and being disconnected from society, and institutions. It has nothing to do with cooking on a wood stove or building your own home. A multi millionaire could privately contract a team of builders blindfold them fly them somewhere remot and have them build a mansion, that has its own power, water supply, sewage, satellites for phones and wifi, nstural gas drills, etc basically all modern amenities, blind fold them and fly them away. Then fly their helicopter out there by themselves, and that would be more off grid than anything this man has done.

Excellent. My son recommended your site about a week ago and I'm glad he did. I got "infected" with back-to-the-land fever in the early 70's and did a lot of reading but in the end life took me in a different direction. The idea never left me though. Now, at the other end of life, my son and his family have picked up some land and we are all going to take some time to build a conventional cabin this summer. Exciting. I was not troubled by the stove and so on. I understood what you were doing. There's no way I could go 100% off grid. But homemade energy? Definitely. I might add that what my early obsession with the back to the land thing gave me was many years of satisfying gardening with many successful seasons. Canning, drying and freezing my produce, and building a garden shed, mulch bins and so on.

The nice thing about your lifestyle is that it works for you, Brooke, and your family. You are living the dream! Your dream! You don’t need to explain yourself to the negative people questioning your every move. If they don’t like it they should just go back to their way of life and start a KZbin channel of their own. I love your channel as well as Brooke’s. Simple living, outdoors & peace! God bless you both!

Like the guy said being off-grid simply means you're not connected to the electric lines the gas lines if your world enough possibly not the water lines are sewer lines so technically we're off grid but we have a tiny solar array tiny portable generator we can power our phones or phones have internet we can tether our computer to our phones and have a laptop we can cook on a propane stove only is old-fashioned as you want to be it's your choice and of course of course local ordinance

DHS, Dept. of Human Services, gets mad and upset when I don't return their calls within 24 hours. I have a cell phone because I have a motorcycle and make long trips and have the phone in case an emergency happens. I have tried to get DHS and SS to used email to get a hold of me because I don't turn my phone on unless I am on a motorcycle trip.

You and your wife are such kind souls to share your lives with us and being from Boston I can't tell how relaxing and enjoyable it is to see your videos! Your videos and Brook's have given me some great ideas, not just for off grid living, but to pay attention to my own footprint here where I am and to appreciate the peace and solitude of the outdoors or getting away every now and again on to the trails or whenever I go camping or hiking, I feel more prepared or I look for things now, I didn't see before. I'm less intimidated to try something. If you're doing it "wrong" for some people, I'd have to say you're doing it right for a lot more! You're video on your trip across Canada to Alaska was just breathtaking! Thankyou again to you and your lovely wife for taking the time to make these videos and share your knowledge with us!

I'm 25 and I've worked in construction for the last few years but have experience from concrete to framing to finish carpentry and cabinetmaking. I've done remodels before and it's a blast. I spend every weekend in the mountains, so I've been dreading the thought of buying a home here in the city. Man, your videos give me a bit of inspiration for buying some land and building my first home somewhere outside of town in the hills or mountains. Thanks for the depth and detail of your videos. I know I have the skills to build, remodel, furnish, and trick out a place if I simply have the land and information. You're a blessing and you're the first kick in my rear to do what I've always dreamed of. I want to say thank you.

Hello... I am from Belize and I live in a small Village called Pueblo Viejo. I speak Mopan Maya, Kekchi Maya, Spanish, Creole and English. There are many villages in Belize where there is no Electricity and we use lamps or small kerosene bottle lamps. Our village is one of many places without electricity and we are completely off-grid. We do not have cellphone service, internet, cables to watch movies or shows, and we dont own many electronic things at home. I have a cellphone yes but I only use it when I come to work. And from where I work to where I live is about 4 hours driving and that is where electricity is located and service for my phone. What you are doing is amazing and I am very very happy to see that someone with opportunities in life tends to experience how I live daily. Our house is almost the same as that cabin. But in this world, you can never satisfy anyone. There are so many ignorant and negative people who do not care of the sacrifice, the effort that you are doing to build and share something for them to learn or enjoy. They will always have something to say and it just make me sick . But I am going to tell you that what you are doing is so inspiring. Don't listen to some negative people they just want attention and if they don't like your channel they should just keep their comments to themselves. Keep entertaining us. Thank you for all the videos. God bless you and give you strenght for your future projects. Chao.

Good video with some damn good points raised. I’m 47 years old and I’ve lived half my life off grid and half my life connected to the grid. I can assure you the times off grid were a hell of a lot more satisfying, less stressful and a lot more healthy. Of course, that’s just how I see it. I can also tell you that most of those off grid locations were within a 15 mile drive of the nearest store. Yep, a general store, you know the kind of store that sells just about everything you need. Not a Walmart, just little family owned places with a couple gas pumps and friendly smiles. Some of the locations were accessible by road, others required a half mile hike in from the road. Some were in the cold Northeast of USA, some in Hawaii and a couple in the jungle on an island near India. Bottom line is this, we choose how we live if we are smart enough to do just that and having some “modern” amenities like a propane tank (lmao, “modern”) are great. Generators are wonderful too for charging batteries, running hand tools and yes, even the occasional movie to watch. Screw these people that have some issue with the way you live brother. Just keep on keepin on. And they wonder why you choose to live further away from all the self righteous wackos......

The world is full of A-holes, on or off grid, so pay not attention to them. I think it is great what you and your family are doing. You are doing your dream!!! I started watching you not quite a year ago and have seen a few years back of your videos. And, if we were younger and went off grid, we would probably not do everything like you. We do raise as much food as possible these days, and would likely go more in that direction. But for sure we would have be taking advantage of what would help us. So good for you and your wife. God bless you❤️🙏

When I watch your videos (wife included) I see intelligent people that are happy. When you made the one panel solar unit using the materials that were made by a factory but not what they were made to do. You used your excellent mind to use what you had and made a simple but a workable solar powered unit. I like watching you and Brooke doing what you enjoy I say that is hard work but they enjoy it. I hate that you had to do this explanation video but you didn't need to for me. If I wasn't so old and as smart as you I'd be there also.

I was born in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1951. When I was five we moved to a very remote area. It was 9 years of the best years of my life. What you and Brooke do is the best of off grid living! It is authentic. If other people nag about it, then they need to stay where they are... we don’t want them here! I live semi remote on the Kenai Peninsula now. And the last thing I need is some outsider telling me I don’t live remote... because I know for a fact they would not be able to handle living like this! You and Brooke are amazing! Just the best videos. My favorites to watch!!! Brooke building that A frame was so cool. And the cabin you built! Awesome! Ignore the ignorance and enjoy your fans (I am a number one fan as thousands are)! Happy going forward! Those ravens are having a real gathering! 😎
