University dining doesn't work like this. Any decent sized college or university will have different food options, including large dining halls (usually buffets with different options), fast food, and convenience stores. Plus, students don't have to eat from campus dining. It's rarely, if ever, as standardized as it is in a military setting.

A large piece of lasagna, salad, and two breadsticks in less than five minutes. And he must have consumed 15-20 cups of coffee a day. His only problem came when we were in port. @lancefisher8358 Okay, I wasn't a Marine who's been on multiple MEUs on 3 different amphibious assault ships... We had fresh fruit, fresh bread, fresh vegetables etc. for the entirety of the 6 month deployment. Helicopters ferry supplies constantly, even to smaller destroyers. Depending on the region, the US Navy will purchase food from nearby countries, or receive supplies from the various Naval Support Activities around the world. Carriers are even better because they can use C-2 Greyhounds to pick up food and mail. You underestimate the logistical capabilities of the US Navy.

I went to Job Corps in Oregon 20 years ago and our cook was a grizzled old Navy cook who'd burned his taste buds off years ago. The man was such a good cook, and we ate SO well. Almost everyone gained weight there. And they were supposed to be feeding all 400 some odd students on under $1.60 a meal. The spaghetti sauce was amazing (served on penne, always) and they had to limit us on the breadsticks so everyone got a chance at them. Hot turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy on bread... Every weekend we had biscuits and gravy, eggs cooked to order, sausage, chunky potatoes... soda on tap for lunch and dinner. Salad bar, bread and bagels, fruit, soups, and even a nacho cart with hot chips and cheese. The US government is NOT playing when they invest in the food they serve to those they train.

The next class period doesn't start for 50 min or so after they ring that bell. If they need a little more time to eat they can certainly sit there and chat, many people stay after the bell dismisses them for 5-10 minutes.

That is a lot of mouths to feed and a lot of processed food. I don't know how they would create that many meals without pre-made foods. I just wonder about their health after eating all of that. I love the sentiment of the staff to make the Midshipmen happy. We have a family member that attended Annapolis. 🎖
