Coconuts produce some of the most expensive cooking oil, selling for up to 12 times the price of canola oil in the United States. But the health benefits coconut oil devotees swear by are hotly contested, and the American Heart Association even recommended that consumption be avoided. Nevertheless, the industry is expected to grow by half a billion dollars worldwide over the next four years. So with the controversial conversation surrounding the product, why is coconut oil so expensive?

As a Cebuano (which means I live in the Philippine province of Cebu), It’s so surreal hearing my own native tongue spoken in a Business Insider video. I’m so used to reading the subtitles as I watch videos of other cultures, this time I don’t have to. And it’s also more surreal to think that some of what is being said isn’t perfectly translated in the subtitles, so we never know how much nuance we lose in videos with languages we don’t speak.

I'm from the Philippines and one of the things that I'm grateful of is, I live where my favorite fruit is cultivated. It's a lot cheaper compared to the price in the Western but since I was a teenager I really think the price here is a bit expensive especially for the the poor people. It's $0.50 minimum for a young coconut, considering I live in a developing country. It has a steady has price for 2 decades as far as I can remember. I don't know the price prior to that as I was just a grade school back then. It's price equals one apple and we don't cultivate apple here, obviously. One matured coconut could only make a quarter or less of a liter I believe. I worked in a vegetable manufacturing company before and they don't process coconut oil because it's expensive (that's from a business owners pov) I. So yeah even I considered it expensive. And yeah I also have difficult time finding young fresh coconut in where I'm currently living right now. Also, coconut cooking oil is outnumbered by palm oil in the market.

In S-India, in early 90s; local coconuts were tarnished/abused as bad for diet whilst imported sunflower were better. Now they say regional factors are very important and what is good in diet in one continent is not the same for the other. Unnecessary vilification of coconut by vested interests. meanwhile, coconut trees in backyards have reduced, as labour costs to pluck them have skyroocketed; land parcels have reduced and coconut farming as a sustainable business is no longer viable for most. sad predicament. earlier we used to give away coconuts from our native house and now there are hardly any to share.

Fresh coconut is very popular here in Philippines so they are harvested early. They command a better price than coconut oil and no processing is involved.

Most Filipinos use manufactured coconut cooking oil. But one can make one’s own cooking oil, but it will involve 3 to 4 days. You just have to cook the milk which will yield the oil. No chemicals are involved. So the process is organic.

Coconut oil is not expensive at all... in India and East Asian countries... In US, where companies trying to sell it at highest profit by putting the sticker organic there is the issue. When I moved to US, saw Organic coconut for first time in the Asile at marketplace stores laughed a lot at the fools. My whole life , I knew it's always Organic.

Having lived in the Philippines for over 15-years, this video was a shock to me. I had no idea that coconut oil was considered a high-priced commodity. 😆 On a serious note, it's saddening that this price hike at the consumer end does little to raise Philippines workers from poverty.

Me hears : Coconut oil is expensive.... Me who lives in a coconut plantation in Kerala, India and has an oil producing factory within the farm : 😛 We use coconuts as balling balls here🤥😂 But it has very low price here in Kerala and often we go underpaid....😭 Same stuff happens with Rubber plantations here..... **Lucky enough it was side business, or family budget would get ruined.... The problem is most of the coconuts especially in non- plantation areas just lie on the ground because no one picks it up.... We have a lot more production, but in many households, people don't even bother to pick them up and use it or sell it if they have surplus coconuts, its sad.... I would have been a millionare if I had cultivated in the west... 😂
