QRS3C273 Yep, greed. . .on the part of the consumer who will buy the cheapest printer rather than looking at the total cost of ownership. I doubt many would buy a HP 4520 at $ 170 ( $ 120 cost to make + a bit of profit ) with lower cost ink when a printer next to it is $ 60. but has more expensive ink. How about you or David Connett opening up a printer manufacturing company and sell things for.what you would want to pay? First they make the printheads non-user replaceable (it means the bin when they fail or clog), then they spent MILLIONS in R&D to develop nasty non-refillable cartridges with chips designed to lock out competitors and cause trouble, then because printheads are built-in they devised the wonderful vacuum "cleaning" system that sucks out the gold-priced ink and WASTES it in a pad. When the printer *thinks* that the pad is full, it jams up telling you it needs servicing. It means binning the printer if you cannot source the Adjustment Program and DIY. This is EPSON! Another trick they use is to add color ink into black and white printing, so you may be printing a bunch of text and then suddenly "you are out of cyan" - they say that the printer doesn't have "true" black ink and that it is more of a grey so that it can make darker shades of other colors for color printing, but in reality it just means that the non-black ink is used up way faster, because you need more of it to mix into a color to make it darker than if you used black ink and you need more of it along with some color ink to create black too. If they used real black ink, you could use less of the ink more spread out and it'd produce exactly the same colors.
@jsvn1357 Жыл бұрын
they say they need to do this because adding cyan to black toner creates a "truer black" color, but then if that's the case, they should have added more cyan to the black toner.
@presidentkiller Жыл бұрын
Yes, but at least with HP you can disable that "option" in the settings, so it only uses the black ink when printing in black and white.

Rich black (aka process black) is a thing. You can't pre-mix cyan onto the black cartridge because then if you wanted to print a dark shade containing the other primaries (magenta and yellow, which are used to make red, green, blue, orange, etc) the hue would shift, so your dark yellows would be green, magentas/reds violet or purple, etc. But for printing a document you most likely don't care if it's a dark grey or brown.

When I bought my laptop it came with a free HP printer. When school started I had a lot of things to print out. The ink ran out about 1 month and 1/2 to 2 month in. I thought it was because I printed a few pictures of my friend for his birthday so I bought another set of cartridge and that I would only print for school related things (texts, documents, etc.) BUT it still ran out incredibly quick. Thinking it was just too much of an inconvenience, I decided to buy another printer. I bought an Epson printer for 8,000 pesos (155.95 USD). 2 years later and I'm still using the free ink. I only bought 1 refill bottle (black) but there's still some ink left in the bottle. The bottle costs about 250-270 pesos (4.87-5.26 USD). To this day, I only used the first bar/level of my free ink which is crazy because it's nearing it's third year since I bought it with the printer.

I used to refill cartridges when I worked at Walgreens. It involved pushing needles into the cartridges and filling them up. Was significantly cheaper than buying new ones. Printer companies constantly change cartridge types to make older ones outdated. They also started putting ceramic plugs into the cartridges so you couldn’t refill them. I also think the company that made the refilling machine was sued on a constant basis so eventually they just gave up and we stopped providing the services after they stop making refills.

OEM's have a monopoly bc they have a proprietary formula, and they spent alot of money on r&d, so thats one reason why it cost an arm and a leg. Thats why I use cheap ebay ink refill kits. I bought mines a couple years ago for $12 and still have alot of ink left. Ofc I don''t really care if it fades or smears, i can alway reprint it. Plastic is easy for food storage. You can't really get a good alternative for cling wrap. Or phone cases, or toys, or containers, without paying a much larger sum of money. That's the issue with trying to go plastic-free. Some plastic things are replaceable, some aren't so easily done. And some can't afford it, unless there's cheaper alternatives, but currently those are rare.

If a printer manufacturer makes ink cheaper then they would have to increase the cost of the printer. And if people perceive the printer as "too expensive" they won't even purchase it, let alone the ink. Imagine looking at every brand of a simple, small printer for ~$99 and then the same looking printer of another brand for $300? Without knowing the cost of the consumable (ink), most would go for the cheaper brands. Unless most or all manufacturers change, one won't take the risk. Also ink refill takes couple seconds. Open refill tank, pour ink in, close.

We have Epson L310 since 2017 I believe. Still working pretty well. Printed about 2000 album sized photos. Plus some 1500 other pages. Didn't run out of ink yet because we get extra set for free as a gift from e-shop. Even after long period of not using it head isn't clogged. Can't said that about our previous printer Canon Pixma something...

Printers are the worst modern technology that I have ever used. I always run into problems with them.

Me too. If not printing color, buy an HP 1102, and you are done. 5 years, ZERO problems. Its laser.

I bought a Brother laser printer in 2012 and it still is going strong, after 12 years. No more dried up ink cartridges. For a person that doesn't need to print anything often, a laser is more than sufficient in quality of print and the toner doesn't dry up, it's dry powder. I used to curse ink jets and bubble jets because when I did need to print after a couple months, the cartridges little jet holes would be plugged up and dried out. Couldn't print even though I might have only used them once or twice. If you print every day or at least twice a week, inkjets are okay. But I I only need to print things every month or two or even less.

Buy a printer that has an INK TANK... you'll know it's an ink tank since it's outside the printer attached to the sides (sometimes in front) and you can clearly see the ink...

Some companies have designed the cartridge such that it is extremely difficult to refill if it had run out of ink completely. In these cases, it is best to keep topping up the ink now and then, and then reset the cartridge chip when the chip falsely informs the printer that it has run dry based upon its calculations.
@jsvn1357 Жыл бұрын
why would they leave us a method to reset the cartridge chips?

Yours is half crap, and it glaringly shows right these very days. The pharma companies are on the battlefront to find a cure/vaccine for COVID, or do you think the cure comes magically from the above? Printer manufacturers, on the other hand, spent millions in R&D to lock out their competitors and extort mad money from their customers.
@Gavichap4 жыл бұрын
@That One It IS pretty hard when it comes to printers. Inkjet and laser printing required years of R&D and albeit prices are low nowadays, inkjet printheads and laser developers remain an incredible piece of technology. Go and see how a printhead is made!
