@rashidisw4 жыл бұрын
Very early inkjet were made more honestly, the "low ink warning" really were because the sensor fail to detect acceptable level of ink remaining... however that no longer the case with more modern inkjet. With modern inkjet the chip in the cartridge would simply count how many the ink has been sprayed, and after the counter reach certain threshold it would always gives the "low ink warning" regardless of actual level of ink that are still available in cartridge. So even you managed to re-fill the cartridge the bogus "low ink warning" would persist.

I've given up on printers too... haven't needed one for a while, really. I mean... not regularly. I have a Cannon which I loved... it lasted quite a while. I think it looks like a Stormtrooper. White on the outside, black on the inside, and has nice curved corners. It worked fine for several years then randomly broke. I don't know what the problem was. Now, I can't even get it to talk to my computer. Even when it is hardwired. I print things for 10c at the library, or longer documents at my parents'. And really haven't needed anything printed in a while. I liked that it was wireless and had the scanner. I do have a simple flatbed scanner... it isn't wireless... but it also never breaks. Lol And then I had a 2nd printer I'd gotten for the brief time I had an office... I got it used from someone else for like $25. It has mainly sat around in my possession. So, when my Stormtrooper died, I thought, well, I have a 2nd... let me pull that out. But, alas... it also has decided it doesn't want to work either. So, now I have 2 broken printers. I'd tried to get the Stormtrooper fixed... but of course, everyone told me to just get a new one. 🤷🏻♀️ The stupidest industry...

Fun fact: many consumer printers have a print limit. After something like 100,000 pages it will say “I’m broken!” And stop working. You simply breathe in the direction of a color inkjet printer and it throws a message to replace the ink cartridges. Moving to laser printers with toner solves a lot of the breakdown headaches, but the toner cartridges are still supremely expensive and wasteful when discarded. My friend, that's not true, here in Spain I'm buying XL toner cartridges for my Brother MFC-L2700DW at 9,20€, the original Brother MFC-L2700DW toner cartridge costs over 48€ and it's not XL (official one can print over 2600 pages, XL one can print 5200 pages). Original Brother DR2300 drum lets you to print over 12.000 pages and costs over 85€, the one I bought, lets you to print 12.000 pages too, but it costs 11,20€. Ok, but... What about quality? If you find a good dealer, you have nothing to fear, my toner cartridge is a premium one, from a third party company which is always looking for good toner supplier (I mean good quality at an affordable price). So the trick is not buying the first cartridge but doing a good research work with Google, comparing quality and prices, it's not easy, but if you do it, you'll finally discover a good dealer, with quality products, at a very affordable prices.

Still have a Laserjet 2100M (52,50 euro for one high capacity toner cardridge capable of printing 7750 pages) here with JetDirect card plus a Color Laserjet CP1515N for any color work. The 2100M is a printer from 1999 and it still works flawlessly, and initially did work until 2005 as an office printer of the local university until they switched to Xerox. The running costs for home use are seriously low with laserprinters, especially if you only print incidentally. Where liquid ink might dry up and clog the print head of a inkjet printer, toner is dry ink powder with dried resin (which melts and sticks to the paper by laser) . So it can't clog anything up. So yeah, any IT guy with some sense knows what to get. Definitely! So does this IT guy here. 👍

What's wrong with a color laser? They aren't all that expensive anymore.
@LogiForce864 жыл бұрын
@@The77Game They could still mix in cyan. Also the black cardridge in a color printer is a lot smaller... 1200 to 1500 pages as opposed to 7750 pages. Since most documents are black and white anyway, it is thus still much cheaper to go with a B&W printer but it depends on the user's needs of course.
@The77Game4 жыл бұрын
@@LogiForce86 A couple of things. 1) They COULD mix in cyan but DO they? If we don't know then there is no reason to mention it as a reason not to get it. 2) As you mention, you were able to get a toner cartridge with a lot of pages capacity but the typical b&w printers i just checked a few of are only in the 2-3000 page capacity. My parents color laser gets a 2000 page black cartridge(it doesn't run out of cyan any faster than the other colors by the way) 3) The biggest point i would make to the OP is that if someone asks me about what printer to get and they mention they want color then there is no point in telling them to get a b&w printer. The color versions are very affordable now. If they want color, get a color laser printer. I have told people that for many years now. Especially if you sometimes don't print anything for a couple of months. Then the ink printer is done in my experience.

I've been working in an electronics repair shop for the last 8 years. Over this amount of time, inkjet printers have become the worst thing I've ever had to work on. Pretty quickly into my repair career I made the choice to stop working on them all together. Every single one of them is a complete nightmare to disassemble. And even if you are able to find the fault, chances are the only way to get a replacement part is to pull it from _another_ identical printer. Laser printers on the other hand? Absolute dreams. Some of them are more difficult to take apart than others, and there is something to be said about the whole DRM on toner cartridges thing...but the nice thing about laser printers is they are _designed_ to be repaired. At least in my experience. Getting black lines while printing? There is probably some paper stuck to the fuser, or the fuser is dirty and needs to be cleaned. Paper getting stuck? It's probably the duplexer or the fuser. Not printing at all, just sending paper through? You guessed it, it's probably the fuser! You know what's nice about most problems being the fuser? _THEY CAN EASILY BE REPLACED._ In every laser printer I've serviced, the fuser is contained in one easily removable module that can typically be purchased for anywhere from $30 to $100. Depends entirely on the model...but considering most fancy laser printers are anywhere from a few hundred to upwards of $1k, that's a price well worth paying to get it working again. The other nice thing about laser printers? They have less issues overall. If you don't use an inkjet printer for 6 months, there is a very high chance it will just suck at printing when you end up using it. The ink gets all nasty, the print head gets all dirty, and you'll probably just have to buy a new printer. I have seen this happen so often that I'm convinced it is by design. Laser printers don't do this. That toner can sit in the cartridge for a year, you can never use the thing that whole time. And then when you go to use it, it just frickin prints. _AT WORST_ you might have to take the cartridge out and shake it a bit. But that's it. I think what surprises me the most about inkjet printers is, the technology behind how they work is actually incredible. Considering how precise all of it has to be, I'm amazed that they even work to begin with. They really are fascinating pieces of technology. But they all SUCK because of greed. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Hmm ... it may be the fuser? Own a HP Laser IIIp, which I worked to death and I refuse to let it rest in peace. Such a great printer. Have changed some parts and still not working, but I'm gonna go back to it. There was a company where they used to refill the cartridge - now they sell the toner for refills. Also have a Canon BJC-85 bubble jet - refilled the cartridges with no problems whatsoever. Now got this Canon TS3522, black ink printing blank pages - you're right, if not used, the ink dries up and clogs. Opened the cartridge with a blade, removed the sponge, soaked the head in water, rising often until water came clear and voila! It's working and the blinking light is off. Anyway, not just printers but all kinds of electronics, televisions, etc., that end up at the man-made thrash islands in the Pacific that can be seen from space. We are at the point of no return.

Don't know about magenta, but most printers also print yellow microdots called the Machine Identification Code on every single paper they make, they identify the device that printed the document and can give clues as to who printed it. It's been a thing since the mid-80's and people only learned about it in 2004. You'd need special equipment to see them clearly, and even if you do, you'd need to know how to decode them to get any information out of them. Like I said, they ARE yellow, and are printed on EVERY paper, even if in black and white. They're small but they're printed several times (in case the printing process makes them unreadable) all over the paper on EVERY paper, so that adds up over time.

IF you try using another software the drivers make your life a living hell giving you wrong aspect ratios and various wrong sizes. Yeah it costs 20 pounds for the whole printer. But the headache that comes with it is not worth it. Especially after 100 pages when the printer says you need new ink cartridges. Pixma models are a joke. Do not buy.

I did that to my first printer bought 10yrs ago. After one year of almost no use tells me no ink when the cartridge is 90% full. I took it out saw a microchip and sorta figured out what was going on. Printer ink 100% is a scam. My printer keeps telling me its expired ink but I take the ink cartridge out without rotating it and somehow the ink spills everywhere. It got all over my hands and the floor and permanently stained them, I tried different soaps and it won't come off. I don't understand how anybody is supposed to remove the ink cartridge without ink going everywhere, I literally just removed it normally without rotating. So not only does the ink seem like perfectly fine, they are probably wankers that find it amusing not only to scam people by making them buy more ink, but also when you go to replace the ink, they probably find it amusing how it will spill everywhere when you try to pull it out without rotating it.

My photo only, dedicated Epson "professional " photo printer I bought in 2006 ran flawlessly until 2019. No glitches despite thousands of photos and documents until September 19, 2019... it stopped. I looked at the device display screen for a clue of the problem. Up popped a message " You have now exceeded the mechanical life of this device." Moments later... "Good-bye" it blinked off. It had powered itself off for good! I stood there slack-jawed for a good long while astounded at what I had just witnessed. Did my printer in a "HAL" moment ( 2001 a Space Oddessy) just signed off for good? It appears there is a engineer somewhere in Japan with a great sense of humor that in the event one of their printers should have the remarkable luck of lasting to the end of its internal clock, it was programed to sign off. Ink was still expensive, only worked if all 5 cassette were filled but I was still able to buy one color at a time. Bought another Epson. Not so good.

What we need is a massive group of enthusiasts to create a open source printer drivers that ignore all of the chips and the printer issues and stuff.
@skepticmoderate57906 жыл бұрын
The printers are designed to make that impossible.
@simplylinn6 жыл бұрын
Most likely, the "I WON'T PRINT" is built into the firmware of the printer, not the drivers themselves. So we need to reverse engineer the printer firmware in order to build a new firmware that ignores the chip, or just use the chips as "guideline ink reporting" and not a hard cutoff point. This is non-trivial, and in fact, very very hard. So it'll probably take a few months or even years. Per. Printer. Model. It's just unfeasible to do. An engineer with good reverse engineering skills and possibly a couple of interested friends might be able to download a firmware update from the manufacturers website (if available), reverse engineer that update to figure out how it works, why it works, and that's an entire field of research. On top of that, this technique will only work on stuff that's not cryptographically signed. If you manage to unpack and alter the firmware, you still need to repack and sign the altered firmware, and that's something only the manufacturer can do. So now, on top of reverse engineering the function of the firmware, you also either have to brute force the private key used to sign the package (computationally unfeasable) or find an exploit that bypasses the check for signed firmware, essentially jailbreaking the printer, and that's ANOTHER engineering field. And all this needs to be done for every printer model ever made, and you pretty much have to start from scratch every time. Some printers might be similar enough to be able to transplant some of the work between them, but that's probably just inside a line, like the consumer and prosumer model might share the same jailbreak exploit or similar. But there's just too many printers and too much work that needs to be done in order for this to ever become a reality, sorry.

+Karol Kozik Doesn't mean free ever, just often coincides with free. Printer manufacturers were actually a formative influence on Richard Stallman to become the open source advocate that he is: "In 1980, Stallman and some other hackers at the AI Lab were refused access to the source code for the software of a newly installed laser printer, the Xerox 9700. Stallman had modified the software for the Lab's previous laser printer (the XGP, Xerographic Printer), so it electronically messaged a user when the person's job was printed, and would message all logged-in users waiting for print jobs if the printer was jammed. Not being able to add these features to the new printer was a major inconvenience, as the printer was on a different floor from most of the users. This experience convinced Stallman of people's need to be able to freely modify the software they use," from his WIkipedia page. Many printers actually can be operated using open source drivers, e.g. with the gutenprint drivers: www.openprinting.org/driver/gutenprint There is also the overarching print system used by mac, Unix, and Linux that was open sourced by Apple (one of the last good things I remember them doing :P), CUPS. The only part potentially missing there is if the firmware takes independent action, but it largely doesn't seem to. In my experience the open source drivers often don't succeed in reading ink levels and just print till they're empty, and even then just try to print. For some models they are able to read them.

I remember back in the day (less than a decade ago), the cartridge chips weren't as sophisticated, so I had a ink printer hooked up to a continuous ink supply system (CISS), which is basically fancy words for drilling holes to the original cartridges and hooking them up via tubes to ink reservoirs velcroed to the side of the printer. The ink cost like $15-20 on eBay for 5 x 100ml bottles of each colour (as opposed to 4-5ml you get with an official $60 cartridge). That sucker worked like a god damn machine, printing everything I wanted, in full color, including photos or wtv else I needed. All for the cost of next to nothing. I used to photocopy entire university books that I'd borrow for free from the uni library (since uni books are another scam, where they cost $300-500 a piece and "new" ones are released every year with no changes in them) and it cost me basically a price of a ream of paper.. Then there is also an "environmentally irresponsible" option to buy a new printer every time your ink runs out and selling the old one on Craigslist to some schmuck. Cos a new printer comes with a set of new cartridges, yet it's price is often cheaper, than buying just the new cartridges alone. My dad tends to print a lot of stuff and the issue is almost never his pc. His printers que thats stored on the printers internal memory usually caps out because it cant remember to clear itself once its been powered off. This is the same issue most dvd/blue ray players now have. And is often the reason your player stops working all together. The system memory is stuffed with old stop data from the last however many movies you watched on it and the player stopped clearing the cache to reset itself. Now the part that pisses me off is this isnt an issue in any other industry of tech. And where it was an issue in the past with early sdram and memory modules. Its been fixed for a very long time now. So the bs excuse of printing technology is expensive is bullshit. The most tech research they do is how to go from design to production with the least amount of issues. The printing tech hasn't changed its still an ink carriage that houses the cartridges that uses mostly the same technology as the first color printers from the late 90s. The worst part about the system not clearing its cache every once in a while to avoid most of the issues people have with printers (aside from clogged heads or bent carriage guide) is a single command line with a time delay. Say every 800- check system, to make sure the system isnt actively printing, if not clear system cache. Timer resets and so on... i remember the first time i watched this video i got pissed for the same reason. Its a single command line that for some reason nobody is using and could save a lot of user frustration. But i think its intentional to get you to buy a new system. They cant sell you new ink if you dont have thier new printer. And if they had that issue fixed with blu ray or dvd players you would likely never need to buy another.

It was so satisfying. Now I just print what I need at work.

Someone needs to kickstart an easy-ink-replace-compliant printer with open source design!

We really do! There are open-source 3D printers, so why can't there be open source inkjet printers?

In Saudi Arabia, there are shady computer repair shops run entirely by Indians that modify Ink cartridges and printers so they can be refilled at like 5% of the original cost. Bless them.
@FRN20136 жыл бұрын
In the Philippines, it's all mainstream. The retail stores sell you the printer with ink wells mounted on the outside of the printer for easy access. You can buy refill ink quite cheaply. And printers often have a long warranty enabling you to get free or cheap repairs.
@midge_gender_solek33146 жыл бұрын
Same stuff in Russia. I think that these shady schemes don't work that good outside of first world countries, because people can't just waste money on ink and are forced to think there. It's a good thing.

ти во First World Country citizen here. You can get ink cartridges refilled at many local stores.

Interesting, I thought it was the same thing as with software piracy.

Here in Pakistan we just bypass the software on the chip and used locally manufactured ink to refill the cartridges over and over gain. So what if the warranty becomes void, its only a $60 piece of equipment. I even know a few people who 3D print whole new ink cartridges.

those who asking how to do it. A simple google search will help you. I have done it with different printers in the past because my job required printing a lot of photos. Every printer has a different process from swapping IC on circuit to installing custom firmware.

I had to go check the prices to find out if this was also how things are in India, fortunately they are not, printer are about $150 while ink is $10, guess they realised that Indians will dismantle every part of the damn thing to figure out a cheaper way

What the hell?! why use a sledgehammer like that?, you are going to damage the WOODSTAND. Put the printer on the floor then hit it.

HP instant ink- “affordable” printer (start at $50) some printers have a free plan, where you can print 15 full colors for free per a month. We pay $3 a month for 50 pages a month, it’s even better than laser. (Not sponsored but it’s the best deal, provided you can make it worthwhile)

@@esyew So basically even though you have already Paid for the printer you have to pay to use it? And like most who are used to this nonsense you think it is a GOOD idea. So not only do you pay 50 for a printer designed to wear out if used much they also are getting a monthly fee from you.

Canon sells the refillable G2000 series printer (in mexico) for about 120 USD, you use a refillable container on the printer and the ink is really cheap.
