I have one homing pigeon. My dad rescued him from a dangerous little spot at work and he was pretty much half dead. He brought him home and I took care of him. He had a brother but his brother didn’t make it past 3 months. I was sweeping out my pigeons coop today and he kept attacking the brush.

They are pretty expensive but you can't just catch one since those are extremely inbred but what I use them for is hatching eggs like let's say I have Indian fantail eggs ill put them in her nest and she raised him but they do cost a buck or two

It's not always food. I have racing pigeon (I don't race them ) and they go out when sun comes out and they're full of foods when they're back. A safe home is enough for them they're really loyal to you.

1. No one knows for sure how they know their way home. Some say they sense the magnet energy. The angle of the sun or by smell. It might be a combination. My best guess is the magnet theory. Mainly because they circle around a bit before they head in one direction. Just like we have to do with our phones sometimes to get the GPS to work. 2. It's instinct. 3. They do both short and long distance. There is a famous race in England where they release the Birds in France and they fly over the English channel. It's around a 600 Mile race. ....my grandfather had pigeons during WWII and my dad raced them in NY. One of my brothers has a white dove release business in NY and another brother has a one Loft race in Louisiana.

Pigeon racing, while seemingly harmless, is extremely cruel to pigeons and many birds die while racing. First, the birds are essentially kidnapped from their home lofts and driven miles away. Pigeons do have a fascinating ability to navigate and fly back to their home, not only because they have been bred to do so, but most racing pigeons are taken away from their lofts while they have mates or chicks. This urge to get back to their families is what pushes the pigeons to fly so fast. Most pigeon races occur over vast distances and treacherous territories; pigeons are raced across deserts, lakes, and suburban areas where the birds often are killed by hunters, predators, or simply die of exhaustion. The few birds which survive and "win" the race are bred with other, winning birds over and over again, further inbreeding the population Sure, pigeons can be "so expensive" fir their speed, but how can people pride over breeding thousands of birds in order to take them away from their loved ones and drop them hundreds of miles away in order to bet on their lives? Pigeons are intelligent, social birds which feel love, hope and pain, and to me, this entire "sport" is just unnecessarily barbaric and cruel to pigeons.

I agree I knew nothing about it until I found a lost homing pigeon out on my sidewalk yesterday morning. We caught it today and didn’t even think to look at the green or red band to find owners. The neighbor that was watching us said it’s been hanging around the sidewalk for a week now. I found a lady that rescues pigeons and had her come pick it up and give it a new home.

In our neighborhood, its a common practice that when someone's pigeon came into your loft they gotta have to pay a ransom to get it back. I have 10 pairs of pigeons before, we used to track those trucks that are going to release racing pigeons. When we see some pigeons already in air, we release some of our pigeons to lure some of racing pigeons into our lofts. Its like piracy and I miss clapping and whistling for pigeons.

We had a racing pigeon come to our backyard and sit on the lid of our hot tub everyday for no reason and we looked up the owners tag on its leg and turned out the owner passed away so the bird was on its own, a few weeks later of hanging out in the backyard an animal bit its wing and we had to take it to a vet, he lost his wing so can't fly anymore but we built him a big cage so he can be inside and on nice days he likes being carried outside. Been a few years and I was afraid he'd get depressed but thankfully he's not. He's full of love and energy. Now he gets spoiled with toys and premium food he's living the life 😂

Just a hint look at the nose or beak of the bird. Just like a race car the more sleek and aerodynamic it looks the more expensive the bird. Those pigeons you see on billboards, will not have that aerodynamic look. I know you think it's crazy but it's true the wild ones their head will come down and make a sharp turn towards the beak. The racing pigeons of good stock the head will blend right in to the beak in a very streamlined form

It's cruel. Many birds never make it home. They die from starvation, dehydration or are killed by predators. How can you call it a sport? Visit a site called Palomacy to see how many of these pigeons (sick and injured) are available for adoption because of their irresponsible owners.

Ahhh poor you, what are you some kind of a liberal left-wing activist, these racing pigeons have been selectively bred for flying long distances they are trained and conditioned just like athletes, pigeon fanciers who race them have experience in checking the quality and condition of the birds before allowing them to be shipped off to a race I'm sure there are a few non-caring ones that would ship an unconditioned bird to a race, these birds have excellent homing instinct, these racing pigeons can come home from hundreds of miles and some not even be tired out like they only flew one lap around the coop. Fun fact in the middle East during the Gulf war. The Americans couldn't figure out how the enemy was communicating with each other. Later they found out it was racing pigeons... A little known fact is that pigeon racing is a cruel hobby that often kills the birds used in such races. Don't support this hobby! It's cruel and I am strongly against this "sport"!

As far as animal sports go I'd say pigeon racing is one of the least brutal. Generally the birds are not drugged, not laced, not injured by their keepers in an effort to keep them working, not trained to do anything stupid just for human amusement. A racing pigeon most of the time only faces threats that ANY wild bird would face ( IE predation and such ).

1.4 wtf, before I came back here in america I owned 13 pigeons and they all cost less than one dollar each, but a few had babies and now I have close to 30. My cousin is taking care of them.

In the time of "CORONAVIRUS WORLD WAR - 3" in 2020 when your own life is at the hands of a invisible pandemic it's cinema and documentaries that breaks all barriers and provides solace and entertainment in the confines of a house.As a lifelong sports enthusiast and a silver jubilee pathological gambler on horse racing decided to understand the sport of pigeon racing.Picked the right documentary and found this video extremely educating to a novice from Mumbai in India where pigeon racing does exist in a few city's. Surprised to know that China is the country that now monopolizes "Pigeon Racing" purchasing the costliest racing "Armando " for 1.4 million U.S dollars. Thought only race horse cost that amount of money. Surprised that the Royal Family of England is also actively involved in "Pigeon Racing" as i was under the impression they only raced horses. One of my favourite boxer's Mike.Tyson is a pigeon fancier and If "PIGEON RACING" existed in Mumbai i would definitely have been a active player in this bird sport. Ahoy !
