I tried wagyu sashimi recently. I was skeptical, since I’m not generally a big fan of land meat, but I’ll try anything twice. It was amazing. Absolutely buttery, almost dessert-like. I don’t know if I would personally eat an entire steak. It would probably be good, but the experience of savoring just a few slices of raw meat was amazing. I’m glad I let my friend order for us, since I never would have thought to try it myself.

They don’t stop to even ask “does it deep fry?” they just go for it. Chocolate bars and double deep fried food,….walking on the high street in Scotland, I was blown away by the sheer number of places; franchised fast food giants, to the knockoffs, the fish and chips, and everything in between.

It confusing. What you want is japanese black cattle, which since the early 80s has been illegal to export the livestock (which is bullshit). You can find 100% black cattle in the US but its rare(no pun intended). They come in different grades (this is A5). But just normal 100% black cattle is better than any other steak. The A5 really isn't eaten like you would typically eat a steak. Its too rich. I personally haven't ever bought it (had some nigiri that was amazing), but i do make orders online for boxes of wagyu. They also sell it at my local grocery store ($25/lb for wagyu ribeye is a steal).

Japan has some very different notions of value and culture. Normal food is quit cheap and good, but at the same time there are shops that just sell "pretty" food for insane prices. There is this trope about overpriced fruits in japan - and it isn't even wrong. You can very well pay upwards of several hundred dollars for a melon - they are meant to be given as a gift. Sushi - some cuts of Tuna are just expensive, in general sushi does not cost that much, around 50 cents - 1 dollar a piece for the "normal" stuff.

Story time. As a child, my steak was well done with A1 sauce. I didn't know anything different until I was 22 years old. Went to a company function in my honor. Fancy restaurant. I took my wife, as you do. The only option was chicken or steak for the meal. We both picked steak. When it arrived, we cut into it and noticed it was red, what we presumed to be uncooked. We looked around and noticed everyone just eating it up, so we gave it ago. It changed my life. I've not ordered steak well done again. I've even ventured into the dark territories of "Pittsburg Blue". My wisdom I'll impart on you... if you find a place that has certified A5 Wagyu, get it medium. If you're a steak person, like myself these days, you'll be tempted to order rare. DO NOT DO THIS. Wagyu is meant to be served medium. Medium rare at best.

similar story in Australia, the most prized meat is called either a "bunnings snag" or a "democracy sausage". In both cases it's a cheap, supermarket sausage, cooked by volunteers, fundraising for organisations like the scouts or local schools, then thrown onto a piece of white bread, with some onions & tomato sauce. People will travel for miles just to get a bunnings snag. In covid, they even set up mobile vaccination clinics nest to the snag stall when vaccine numbers stagnated & got a massive increase because of location lol. Bunnings is an Aussie hardware store brand & the sausages are cooked in it's carparks on Saturdays & Sundays lunch time. "Democracy sausages" are a rarer beast & even more prized, being only available at polling booths during elections, therefore ensuring everyone turns up to vote, so that they can buy their "democracy sausage". No deep frying with either, but you can get butter lathered onto the bread & so covering the sausage too :) Ok, so we don't charge a fortune for these in the way wagyu does, but most Aussies would automatically choose the bunnings snag over a wagyu if offered both

For all of us who go to the grocery store and look for that ideal steak. If that Wagyu steak was sitting there and you had no idea what a Wagyu steak was, say it had New York strip, or ribeye on the tag, would you buy it? Because I wouldn’t I wouldn’t want all that marbling and fat. I like some marbling because it makes the steak tender but that much you got little tiny pieces of meat people. That’s why they deep fry it! So it’s like bacon if you deep fry bacon and fries all the fat off of it, the hot grease disintegrates the fat. Can you imagine if I put one of those Wagyu steaks on the grill gross I’m sure you would not eat it…. Eat it for a month and you’ll look like the cow, and plus you’ll die like the cow, Soylent Green

@Sassy The Sasquatch depends on your hygiene. but consider this, the bread we have today with white flour was only eaten by the really rich back in ye olde times. it was considered a huge luxury, then we figured out how to mass produce it, and white flour is sold by the 5-20 pound bag. now imagine if kobe beef production wasn't kept so tightly held. better feed that produced better marbling would be researched and produced, people would experiment with the cow breeding to make better kobe style cows, and eventually mass production of said cows would be possible. the quality would not drop, rather, kobe quality would become the new floor for quality, and it would only get better from there. kobe beef production is like diamonds. the breeds/mines are held by 1 or 2 small groups that create artificial scarcity to drive the price waaaaaaay up.

its not something i would recommend adding to your weekly grocery list. But it is worth the money for special occasions. You don't necessarily eat a whole steak per person. There are many ways to implement the meat into other dishes, which makes one or two steaks enough to feed a family of 4 or 5. Its definitely worth it and i would recommend trying it at least once. I was skeptical when i was introduced to this meat during one of my trips to Japan. I now eat it at least once a year, there are export sites where you can have it shipped to your home. I have 6 KG pof A5 (BMS 10-12) of Striploin and Ribeye in my freezer, individually portioned to 6 oz sizes. It's honestly great to show off to people (I use to be a Chef and I cook/host a lot of clients at my place), but you cannot eat more than 2 oz in one sitting. It literally coats your mouth in fat, and when you sear it, there's so much fat that runs off of it, it makes it slightly unappealing.

As a butcher of 17 years I can honestly say this beef is seriously different to most other cattle 100% tastier

3:42 That deep-fryer look so spotless, has it even been used more than once? I have experienced cleaning those things and they are a pain.

_Paws_ it probably taken in a 5 star restaurant. They replace the fryer every single use

The fryer is from Japan so it’s got to have good quality

I ate this once at a really high end place and honestly it isn’t all that its a tiny bit better than normal beef but not “crazy legendary orgasmic taste”

acerojr I spent 22 bucks last night on Manukau honey. It was good but I feel the same way.

I mean to me normal beef already has a “crazy legendary orgasmic taste”

Absolutely. I spent $170 on a couple of slices in a fancy NYC restaurant to share with a few buddies and we all thought it was good but totally not worth $170, not even close.

@@ryuhkiandrewssuzuki9737 I don't remember; it was more than 4 years ago. It did taste quite good and unique plus the meat looked extremely well-marbled and it was cooked very simply so we don't have any suspicion that we were cheated. We just thought it was good, but not $170 worth of good LOL. I don't regret the experience and education but the excellence vs price ratio was not high enough to buy again. If it was like twice the cost of normal beef, then maybe. But I can think of a lot of better ways to enjoy spending $170, that's all. No big deal.

I eat only Wagyu steak for dinner every night when I am in Japan. It’s delicious. One time I was there for 10 days and I ate 34 wagyu steaks. Just fyi I visit Japan regularly because my wife is Asian. She is 5 feet tall and weighs 85 pounds. I love Japan!!!
