Busted Vise Restoration

Welcome to my restoration channel! In this restoration video I purchased some old machines vises at scrap price. I bought 4 vises for around $30 USD. This vise is a “Brown 6 2”. It was in pretty rough shape. It was busted, cracked, and had a bunch of holes, besides all of the rust. I think this turned out to be a great vise restoration.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I dismantled the vise then used a parts washer to clean them up before sandblasting them. The screws where sanded to give them a brushed finish. The handle was straightened in a vise. The handle and threaded rod were hot blued. The brass threaded bushing was sandblasted then cleaned up with the file, sand paper, and scotch bright. The casted sliding part of the vise was cracked in multiple spots. I drilled a hole at the back of the crack to stop the crack from running. I then cut into the crack to make a groove to fill with weld. We filled the drilling holes with weld after heating the part up. After welding we put the parts in sand-blasting media to slow down the cooling process to help prevent cracking. After the parts were welded, they were sanded, ground, filed. I filled some imperfections with JB Weld. I primed, painted, and clear coated. The finish is a nice metallic blue. I greased the table and sliding area.
This vise will be put to good use, and I think it turned out nice.

Finally, a guy who understands primer before paint always. I tend to apply two coats of primer before I paint but that's me. One grey and one red, I alternate which one goes on first depending on the color I use.. Good job!

Top Marks, as always..! When your sand blasting revealed the set screw, I was like D'uh...super X-Ray spectacles for rust have made removing the brass bushing much easier🤣 lesson learned for all of us...thanks for that. But, I have question: would it be smart, or even possible for that matter, to harden and temper after your welding repairs and after returning the handle to normal..? Would that make the vice/handle too brittle, or is it even worth the effort..? If possible, please let me know, or if anyone else has advice/comments on that idea, please let me know as well...thanks.

I’ve watched our European friends use a mixture of automatic transmission fluid and acetone to break bolts and screws loose. Have you had any experience with this? I myself, have just begun restoring things for fun and nostalgia.

hello, i loved the video and i have 2 questions: 1. why did yiu heat the cast befor welding? 2. why did you want the cast to cool down slowly? ty.

The parts are heated to bring the temperature of the part up before hitting it with welding. Welding produces a lot of heat and we want to prevent cracking due to a sudden change in temp. Same for the cooling process, a slow cool down to help prevent the casting from cracking.

If your welder has a preflow timer set it to a .5 second when doing tacks to not have the perocity like you did

I use a Sony A6000 for most of the filming. Some of the close up shots are filmed on a Canon hf g30. Then Canon camera is the only one with an external mic and it is a Rode Video Mic Pro. You can find some info in my description as well. Thanks for watching and have a great week!

I normally love your videos, but to be honest I think this one seemed a bit rushed, you are usually one of the very few who seem to avoid using power tools, but in this one half of the work was done with power tools. Restoration is a delicate job and should only use power tools if it's absolutely necessary, your sandblasting was uneven and spotty in certain places. Slow Down and take your time, I would rather watch an hour long restoration video without power tools than a 20 minute video with them. Take some cues from Odd Tinkering he takes his time and gets a amazing result and I think with a little patience you can be as good if not better

Stacking tack welds may make it pretty and all but you are not getting the needed penetration to truly fix the crack.

The shaft and handle wasn't properly blued. You didn't get it hot enough.

I could have went hotter. However you don’t want to go red hot or you could run into pealing. The finished product turned out.

Nice paper weight. Looks good but not structurally sound, or true anymore. That would never be on my Mill. Maybe my drill press, but nothing that needs accuracy. And there's paint on the bottom ways!😢

I obviously don’t have a mill or I could have used it on this. And I plan to use it on the drill press. I get that it’s not true as far as to the thousands since I used a grinder to resurface the bed. Lol use what I have not what I don’t have.
