Thanks for the info and the walk down memory lane. My very first Barbie, it had to be in 1961 or 62, had reddish brown hair. Mom made her clothes out of the left over upholstery fabric she used to cover our couch. I played with that doll for years, but I don't recall taking her head off. I do remember how soft her hair was, except for those fuzzy curly bangs! I had a case for her and all of her clothes, too. Ah, memories!

Oh Sue, you really brought back so many childhood memories with the 'Barbie head swapping'! In fact, I used to do that so much that I broke the 'neck knob' (as did everyone else, LOL!) on my #4 (1960) Blonde Ponytail. My mother wrote (a paper/mailed letter) to Mattel to ask for a replacement! She received a reply requesting the 'damaged' Barbie in return for a replacement... That was all well and good, but they sent a Brunette Ponytail instead of a Blonde and I was (am) forever disappointed... All kidding aside, Mattel encouraged the 'head swapping' when they introduced the Fashion Queen Barbie... No wonder they improved the notoriously easy to break 'neck knob' with the better designed version. Please share more of your Barbie knowledge, for me it's quite nostalgic! xoxo, K

Loved all this great info! I myself tend to collect the dolls from my era (70s) more, but it's always good to have info just in case. By the 70s they were scared to death we were gonna put those loose heads in our mouths and choke on them, so we had the safety pegs that kept the head on pretty good, thus I never head-swapped mine. I got my Barbie with the red swim sui with an amber ponytail and Midge when I was about 4/12 years old, in 1964. I got a grey headed Barbie with a bob haircut in about 1966. All have straight hard bodies, along with my Alan doll. I did take the heads off to wash the hair but I NEVER switched the heads around. I can say that my vintage Barbie's of the early 1960's all have their original heads. I loved the hard bodies because the clothes were easy to put on them. When I got Stacy, she had a plastic rubbery body, her clothes were very hard to get on and off due to not being the hard body of the originals. I loved my twist and turn Stacy but I really like the older dolls because of the ease of putting on and off the clothes and why else would you play with Barbie if you aren't changing their clothes. Mattel should have kept the old body forever. I am not even interested anymore in buying anything new in Barbie. It's just so yuck compared to when I was a kid.. My grandmother that passed in 1976 made me a wool lined coat in 1964 for my hard pony tail body and she made her a dress to match the lining. I was so lucky.

I didn’t swap heads because I only ever had one Barbie. I was 6 years old in 1959, my parents bought an early one because they thought it was cool that a doll came out with my name, and our last name was Dahle. I know it is not the one with the foot holes. Funny story: I once told a very young coworker my maiden name was Dahle. She said boy your parents had a sick sense of humor. When I told her I was born before there were Barbie dolls, she thought I was older than God. 😄

I think that is why I am drawn to them, now, as well as other dolls with big wardrobes. Terri Lee Little Miss Revlon, etc. I am actually living my motto of late. It is; "It's never too late for a happy childhood". I love dolls, and have all the ones I wanted as a child. Morning, sunshine. Great Barbie 411! I appreciate your teaching-sharing videos a lot. I look forward to the painting video!👍🏻☕️ I do not collect Barbies. When I was a little girl I did... I loved them.... I would collect the older ones because I liked how they looked.... and then one day my little cousin looked like she was at the age where she might like Barbies and I loved her so much.... not being materialistic 😖😄, I asked her if she would like them because I was growing out of them.... she said sure! She smiled & her eyes were big as saucers! She took them home and locked them in a closet because they were valuable! She was just a little girl but her mother was very very materialistic and I guessed she learned early LOL 😄😄 I was so disappointed that nobody was playing with these dolls. I was thinking “I could’ve locked them up in a closet myself- it’s better to play with them! “ 😡 Then, many years later, I had my own little girl who was getting to be of age where she liked Barbies! I could think of nothing more special than giving her one of my own little Barbies from when I was her age. So I asked my grown-up cousin if I could have one for her because it would be a great memory and she would delight in that.... she said no. They stayed locked up in her closet ....and she is still materialistic .....and she’s 50. 😖😄😄. That is my Barbie story and perhaps why I never wanted to collect them....it reminded me of my cousin and her mom 😡 doing that. 😄😄. I love them dearly, warts and all. It is what it is. I enjoyed this info all the same. Were you ever a teacher? You could be such a good one. Cheers! ☕️☕️☕️

So I hit pause and got my Barbie. The blue case she is in shows her on front with a bouffant hair style, and she does have one, however on her tush above the word Barbie it says Midge. Is it Barbie or Midge? There were two Tressie dolls in the case and clothes/accessories. It was interesting getting plastic transistor radio out of purse. Thanks Sue for the trip down memory lane.
@suemeonyoutube5 жыл бұрын
It's probably a Barbie - Mattel added the name Midge above Barbie on the butt markings when the Midge dolls were introduced. That way they were able to adapt the existing molds rather than having to invest in all new molds. Those bodies are referred to as "Midge-Barbie" bodies.

If I had known someday her doll collection was going to be worth so much, I think I might have treated them a bit better. Then again probably not. I was not a Barbie doll fan at all, but since she was and a, "Miss Priss", to boot, I couldn't get her to come play in the dirt or the woods with me, so her poor Barbies paid the price of my angst. Wish she still had them today, but they went the way of all well worn dolls years ago. ...sigh... Thanks a bunch for the education Sue. I will have to keep a lookout for some of these, and maybe I will give them to her as an apology?! Sadly, when I look back I can see I was something of a brat.

Brat, no - sister, yes. I think we were all pretty tough on our sisters... :-)

My sister got the Barbie with the short curly hair and a Ken and I got a Midge and Alan. 😕 I found my case and some of the clothes. My Mom made most of our doll clothes.

The clothes are worth money, too. The mommy-made things are generally not worth much, some of the early genuine Mattel outfits can go for hundred, even thousands of dollars. So check those clothes. :-)

Love your videos and how you present and share your knowledge. Your videos though, come across as a bit fuzzy making the finer points of your presentation hard to see. Maybe Jocelyn can help?

I have the same doll as you showed...the darker one. I believe it would be considered the #4? Still has some red polish on hands and feet and blue eye shadow. Is this worth anything? Wanting to list on ebay. Also are 1980 Barbie clothes worth anything? I have 8-10 outfits from then. Thanks

I bought a tub of Barbie for $10 this week end. There are 7 dolls I think, most Twist N a turn w 1966 date. Home made cloths and adds and ends of accessorys. All are dirty, some hair cuts. Would you piece these out or all it all as a lot? I don't know a lot about Barbie other then I do have mine boxed up from when I was a kid that I haven't looked at in years.

First, take a look at those old dolls - they could be worth something. Check the 1966 dolls to see where they were made - it will be marked on the back. Set aside anything marked Japan for separate sale, and sell the rest in a lot. Malibu Barbies (dark tans, marked Japan) have legs that can be bleached and used on the much more valuable American Girl Barbies, and those are worth something. But hold the legs because I will do a video on how to bleach them. And a set of pre-bleached Malibu legs in good condition can sell for as much as $50.

Very good information Sue and I'm about over the recurring nightmare of being handcuffed to a bed and being forced to watch sock puppet shows. LOL

I only make the old guys watch sock puppet shows if they're not cooperative. If they're nice to me, I'm nice to them... :-)

I never did that. I enjoyed dressing them up. I never thought to do that.

Me either. It wouldn't sit well with my obsessive way of doing things, even a a child.
