This was very interesting. I never had a Barbie; I had a Midge doll because 'Santa Claus ' couldn't find a Barbie that year (probably 1963 or 64). My Mother sewed many outfits for her. She even had a wool coat with a fur collar.

#4 is my favorite, because it seems Mattel really established Barbie’s general look with it; blonde hair, blue eyes/blue eyeliner, and corrected the vinyl fading problem so her skin is always that nice peachy color. I like a #1-2 only if it’s stenciled, because a lot of the hand-painted ones look quite jarring and witchy. #3 is my least favorite, primarily because of the vinyl fade problem, and also because the eyes look really off on a lot of them. I guess they were taking awhile to adjust to the new face style, because a lot of #3’s look lazy-eyed.

One thing to remember... not all white bodies mean you have a 1 - 3... I have 2 number 4 heads on white bodies. I naturally assumed someone swapped the heads at some point on the first one I found. But I purchased a #4 off Marketplace, met the lady in a parking lot, found out it was her doll as a child. She had the original box even, it was clearly a number 4 head on an earlier body. I asked, she said no, this was the only doll she ever had... so there was no body swap. I then asked a doll repair person, who has dealt with Barbies for 40 some years... they said even with the new head at the time, Mattel had lots of old bodies from the 3s left, so you do often times find 4s with an earlier white body. So just because it has a white body, doesn't mean it is a #3. I am yet to find the treasure of a real number one, well, half the treasure... I have the body to a number one, but I found her headless in a large box of Barbies. Which I searched through that box probably 20 times, thinking it had to be there... nope, just the body! Maybe someday I will get lucky and find a head, ha!

I enjoyed this Sue. I have so much Barbie stuff. I think I got my first in 1966. I finally stored them; one, the petroleum or whatever is coming out of her head, her head was damp. I have a Ken from the same period; and a Malibu. I have the big Barbie country house with the swing and shuffleboard in the yard. The artwork on those early houses is wonderful. My sister and best girlfriend and I would watch the soaps and then play all that stuff with the Barbies. My friend’s mother was dumbfounded one day when my friend asked her, Mama what is rape? We were 10 years old! We lived for Barbies. 😊
@suemeonyoutube4 жыл бұрын
That doll might be a #5 Barbie - the vinyl is degrading over time and, yes, a petroleum-like substance is leaching out over time. There are a few things you can do about it, and if it's of general interest, I can do a video on it...

Those are the ones that i loved, played with, and still have! held on to them to pass on to my little girl one day. sadly, I never had a little girl to pass them on to. Ken with no muscles,Alan, Midge, Francie, Casey, Stacey, (the British friend!) Tutti, Todd, Skipper, Barbie with the 3 wigs, the page-boy cut Barbie, Twist and Turn Barbie, and the list goes on! Lots of cool clothes for them too. BTW we have several kitties, but one of them is black, like Audie. His name is Columbus, because he likes to explore and discover things! Adore Mr. Audie!

Thanks for this tutorial. So now I know my Barbie that my sister put in a garage sale when I was 16 was a #1 as she had holes in her feet. When Mattel started the reproductions at the 25 year mark I started collecting them & still do. I have some old dolls I bought on eBay and a local doll store, but have not even tried to get the first 4. I have a very nice swirl tail blonde who came in a case with a perfect skipper: both had a few outfits in perfect condition. I also found my cardboard dollhouse at a local flea market 😉. I don’t have all the reproductions, but I like getting them here & there on eBay.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have always wondered about the differences in Barbie Dolls. They were so much fun to play with. I fondly remember my Red Headed Titan Barbie Doll (I think that’s what it was) I received for Christmas. Included with the doll was a whole box of Barbie size clothes that my Mom had arranged to have custom made. The clothes probably wouldn’t be as valuable today as the original Barbie clothes but I must say It was one of the best Christmas presents I ever received. Too bad Mom gave my dolls away...(RIP Mom 😔) Who KNEW what their value would become? HAAAAH 😢 I wanna be a kid again!

@jayneneewing23694 жыл бұрын
Your vids one the early Barbies are simply the best. I learn different and interesting things from all of your knowledge. Thank you very much. I think mine is a #2. She’s faded, no holes in her feet but her little black shoes have the holes in them. The band in the lower part of the pony tail has disappeared though, but it’s still in the shape of the pony tail. She was kept in a drawer after my initial fascination wore off. I wanted to take care of her, even back then. I recall being surprised when decades later I took her out to admire her (I loved her as most little girls of that generation) and I saw that she was faded. At that time I couldn’t figure out why the fading had happened, and it was quite some time later that indicated an early doll. I have to check her out more closely when the sun’s out to see the colors on her eyes, and her right butt cheek. Lol. She’s presently wearing the Barbie nighty in pink which I read some time ago was the rare color, yellow was the main color. Also, I still have the clock, I don’t know how I managed that. I think there were a couple of other things with that set, but I guess I no longer have them. I know I have the original bathing suit, but I haven’t a clue as to where it is. Thank you so very much for these vids. Really, thank you.

In the 60's my barbie got it on with GI Joe before they downsized him, Ken was the weak woosie, Joe was a "real" man! I love it when Sue talks to Audie like a comprehending being, he is, cats are, I do the same myself, what you can't see is the look he gives her back, like a kid pouting when told not to do something and you can see the wheels turning, ploting their next move. I didn't get my Barbies until early 60's so they were probably not 1 or 2, did have blue eyes I can remember.

Sue, only #3 Barbies had the BROWN eye shadow. The #4 Barbies had the BLUE eyeshadow. That is how you tell the difference between the #3 and #4 Barbies. There is a Facebook group (Vintage Barbie Collector) that is very good at identifying the 1959-1973 Barbies and clothing.

Some of those dolls ( in the montage) have been painted to look like a number 1....( and i know you mentioned it, but there seems to be a redhead " #1" in your collage, yet those don't exist, ). Also, it is not mohair. Its fine, high quality saran. You cannot run mohair through a rooting machine, as it's a natural fibre with a short length. When the dolls are rooted, a large skein of hair fibre in a bag is used and run through a machine like a sewing machine, with a chainstitch inside the scalp .Also, the dolls were not intended for hair play, hence the hard curl at the bangs and bottom of the ponytail. They were a fashion mannequin of sorts. The bottom rubberband was not intended to be removed.... while girls wouldn't have done that with their hair, it kept Barbie's style intact and in scale. It wasn't until later that hair play was introduced after seeing how kids played with her. Again, NOT mohair.....

Hiya Sue & Audie (you’re like John Lee a little rapscallion😻), everything I told my mother I wanted to keep for “when I was big” she either tossed or in Barbie’s case gave to my sister who destroyed them😢. To make up for it in my 30s my mother bought me all kinds of Barbie’s I mostly hated, had to tell her to stop as now I’m stuck w/ worthless dolls! (Poor thing, she meant well, felt bad that everything I predicted as a child would be worth big $ was but she didn’t believe me... likely why I thrift, still looking for the outfit my great grandfather designed for my MaMa in the 30s that I wanted to wear “when I was big”.) My 1st was “bubble cut” Barbie (I wasn’t old enough for the others🙁) & I hated her! Any older ones I didn’t find until my 20s, nothing worth much except sentimental value. No clue since kiddo decided to rearrange the attic room, everything is a jumble. Eventually, as I clear stuff out, I’ll find out what I have. Thank you for all the info, think I had that book at some point! Have a lovely weekend! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️🦇 PS I promise I’ll find the outfits & send pics- some I can identify as I have the little catalogs, others no clue. Just had a bad week & didn’t get much of anything done, sorry!😘

Hi Sue! I still have my 1962 Brunette Bubblecut along with her Dreamhouse, cars, etc and totally blame her for my hoarder issues as she was no minimalist :)My 10-year-old self learned quickly the joy of materialism, haha. What is your opinion on the overall value of Barbie collecting? Will the value ever return or as the Baby Boomers are aging do you see the values getting worse? I appreciate your opinion. I value my collection in any case but have seen the change in collecting on eBay and was taken aback a bit.
@suemeonyoutube4 жыл бұрын
Well, I doubt we will ever see the pre-eBay prices again, but I have seen the market go up and down repeatedly over the years. On one hand, the great deals are no longer out there - everyone knows what they are selling now and what it's worth. But on the other hand, eBay made so many dolls available that the overall prices have dropped considerably. There is still room for a savvy buyer to make money on these dolls, and for a savvy collector to get good dolls for good prices. Right now, the market is low - but if history has taught us anything, it is that this will change and the market will recover. 😊

Sue...very serious questions here. My wife collected Barbie's as early as 1986 to 2010 or so. We went to many auctions in the midwest as well as the AppleTree auction house in Ohio. She has numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 etc including Gingers, and other highly sought after dolls and accessories. She was a serious collector.For all these years now, we've sat on them. None are on display, all are stored. So many are NRFB, etc. After all these years have they retained their value and gone up as we anticipated? Or have values dropped as other antiques have also dropped. We've not investigated any of these issues, and we collected for future retirement. All collectibles are documented, and photographed.

Thank you for another informative video. Could you talk about the boxes Barbie came in? I noticed your examples had hoop earrings. Mine came with pearl. Is that significant ? I am also curious about original dresses pictured on the box.

I sure can! The earliest dolls came with hoop earrings, and the later dolls came with pearls. Do not leave the earrings in the doll's ears - the can produce a green discoloration on the doll over time, and it's not easy to get rid of it. 😊

@@suemeonyoutube Too late for my Barbie. I left the earrings in and they turned things green. Any suggestions on how to get rid or at least lighten the green? Thanks for the great info on the dolls.

@@nellcovington4001 RemoveZit from Twin Pines of Maine. This is the best product out there, but it is expensive and has a short shelf life. Follow the instructions, and using it in a sunny location will help. And whatever you do, once you decide which product you will use, DO NOT switch over to anything else. It can ruin your doll - trust me, I've seen it happen... 😊

I found a Barbie I believe to be a number 4, it is tan, very dirty, should I clean? Use what? Water does nothing. How much value if she is dressed and has pearl earrings and black open toe heels?

I think the #1 Barbies' eyes were done that way because the Lilli doll had eyes like that. (makes sense since she was based on a comic strip) I suspect that the rumours that Barbie was "inspired" by Lilli are true. Too many coincidences not to be.
