Going forward 2 years, I just bought one and I am 6 ft tall. I had more room at both ends than your partner there. The useful length of the bathtub measured 80 inches for what it's worth. And about 12 inches high of useful height with that bent pole at the foot. Your review sometime later was a bit more positive than this one. Love your stuff. Thanks.

Thanks for reviewing this tent! I've had my eye on it for a while. Earlier this year, I picked up the Sea to Summit Alto TR2 and love it. The only drawback to me is the tapered footbox which makes it a little tight for two people. I've read that the Mountain Hardware is a square footprint which would be nice to have as another tent option. The Alto is great for headroom though and can accommodate tall people quite well. My friend who is 6'2 had plenty of laying room.

The Tarptent Stratospire 2 is an awesome, true 2 person tent. Similar in shape to the Durston X Mid 2, it’s double wall, trekking pole setup, 45 oz, and is $359. It’s also 52” wide and 86” long which when combined with its nearly vertical walls means anybody under about 6’8” should be fine and can use an extra long wide rectangular pad no problem.

Props to the stunt man, Kyle, for taking an elbow to the glasses while you put on your Melly! 🤣 Seems like a promising tent! The weight isn't bad given it's a freestanding tent with all that head room. But you lost me at the 'not for tall people'. I don't think 6 feet is very tall, and once you add in the 2-4 inch sleeping pad (plus the loft on your bag/quilt at the feet) you'll definitely be pulling some condensation off the tent walls with your head and feet. I've been looking for a more UL tent and am intrigued by Zpacks DupleXL because it is so LONG! (listed at 8 feet!). But it's even more expensive! Great video man! Love it!
@MyLifeOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I had to go back and watch it again because I didn’t catch that! Not as much room as I claim I guess! 🤣. 8 feet seems like a lot of tent footprint. I’ve camped places that would not accommodate that tent

At 6’3 and a love of thick 3+ sleeping pads I’ve been happy with two tents: big Agnes copper spur hv UL 2 and the tarptent double rainbow. Both are great for length (guesstimate 6’4 max comfort for BA and 6’6+ for double rainbow) and sit height. Both are competitive in their weights. I actually have the Li version of the double rainbow that’s DCF and only 27 or 29 oz and wide enough for 2 25” pads.

Tents have changed in size over time. I had an REI 2 man tent that was bought new like 16 years ago. It lasted me a good 10 years. It lasted forever and was a TRUE 2 person tent. It was enough room for two people plus a bag inside the tent. It was a two pile design through nylon sleeves and is honestly the easiest fastest tent I’ve ever owned. I did a speed run on setting it up once and it only took me 30 seconds. It didn’t have any of the new annoying clips for the poles. The poles simply attached to grommets on two corners and ended in a reinforced pocket. The fly buckled in with mini plastic buckles in the four corners and you were done pretty much. You could steak out the two door ways if you wanted but I rarely needed to. With the modern fabrics now that tent could still be made and be much lighter. Still it was about 5 lbs which isn’t bad for a very spacious 2 person tent. They got two person coffins now and it sucks. If you have two big fellas in these new two person tents then it’s just not going to work haha.

Feels like it’s a challenge to get a 2p UL for less than $400. I do get the low bathtub floor to save weight but, I’m wondering if there’s a company that’s figured that out. I purchased my last tent in 2003, a Hilleberg Akto. I still have it, hardly used, because I am a solo hiker and have discovered hammocks. I had done a fair amount of summer hiking with a tarp and bug net, so I can set up my hammock on the ground and use the foam pad from my frameless pack if trees aren't available. My DCF winter tarp cost more than your tent. Regarding ultralight tent design; it always puzzled me that most manufacturers have the inner tent mosquito mesh so far from the ridge pole towards the foot end. Much more usable interior volume could be realized by bringing the inner tent up to the pole, I would think.

If you are into treking pole tents the Gossamer Gear "Two" has tons of room for two people. My son and I used it for our 22 day thru hike of the JMT NOBO and we both had Plenty of room for gear and we could both get dressed in the tent at the same time in the mornings. Lots of shoulder room because of the design. Significantly more than the tent in this video. The treking poles when used with the "Two" actually slant outward when set up correctly making the inside of the tent wider at the top than the floor. Its in the same price range of this tent,. Only down side is that it has a very big footprint so you've got to have room to set up properly but in practice, it was not hard to find a spot to set up each night on the JMT.. so may not be an issue depending on terrain.
@MyLifeOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
My preference is for freestanding tents, mainly because I don’t carry trekking poles. And the footprints are really big! I had a friend recently use the Six Moon Lunar Solo and we struggled to find room where he could set it up. I also want to thruhike the JMT. Hopefully in the next year or two

I found a good backpacking tent for my 6'4" husband and myself at 5'8.5". We use NEMO Tenor Wide Regular Insulated Sleeping Pads so most 2P tents are not wide enough at the foot box for 2 25" wide pads. So we're opting for the Sea to Summit Telos TR3 tent as the near vertical walls will give us both plenty of headroom. It's probably more weight than you want to carry at 4 lbs. 10.7 oz., but for a 3 person tent for 2 tall people, it should serve us well. Lowest price I found was $479.20.

Crazy timing, Dan B. just posted a video on this tent yesterday. I'd pass on this tent. It's a decent weight for a freestanding tent but I'm not digging those hooks to attach the poles to the fly. They look like they'll fail sooner than later. Yes the loops near the corners are also weird. I think ppl will buy it for the pros you've listed, a true 2p tent with enough floor space for 2- 25" pads. If folks are looking for a longer tent there's the Zpacks DupleXL which Jeremiah Stringer hypes (being over 6'2") but it'll be one of the most expensive tents you ever buy. Great first look Stephen! Curious to see your longer term review on how this one holds up!

I appreciate the balanced review. I am 6', I use a pad that is 3.5" thick and I fit very well in my 3F UL Lanshan 2. I prefer trekking pole tents because if a pole breaks, a stick can substitute it. However, this tent floor is only 45"-wide, not 50". The Tarp Tent Double Rainbow (also available in DCF as the "LI" version) is 50" wide and accommodates tall hikers. The Dan Durston X-Mid 2p is 50"-wide and fits tall hikers. Dan is rolling out a DCF version this winter. ZPacks now has an "XL" version of the Duplex for tall hikers in DCF that only costs $50 more with more headroom all around and weighs much less.

I’d be fine paying that, but I wouldn’t be thrilled. I like that they use white. If it were a 4 season, it could be an irritation. For instance, if you’re using it as a bearing from a ridge and there was a lot of snow. If that is your only way to navigate back to camp though, you got bigger problems. I'm 6'2 and I get the issues of the tall people... I'm a tent guru! I always check out new tent video's to see how they will do.... for backpacking tents our main option is Six Moons Designs Lunar Solo, but I find you do sometimes get splash back under the venting if rain gets real heavy, for sure for U.L. but I also use a Eureka Spitfire if I know the rain is going to be very bad, it comes in at just over 3lbs but when the weather is real real real bad the Eureka Spitfire is the way to go, and always keeps me dry and is dual walled design. It is a bit tight at the head and foot end but you can sit up no problem in it and read if the weather is bad or watch a movie or cook just outside the vestibule....it's got advantages for sure, but isn't EXACTLY what people consider a light weight tent. The materials are superior to most tents, as most Eureka Tents are. Lets face it the USA's military uses Eureka's trusted building abilities combined with North Face's trusted design in their E.C.W.T (Extreme Cold Weather Tent) for a reason. After that I tend to stick with MSR products mostly due to the Easton poles in cold cold weather the Easton poles are great! (yet another reason they are used in the E.C.W.T.) but there are of course more tall guy options out there. The Eureka Spitfire I got on sale years ago for $100 bux, and it was simply a no brainer and I debated on it for a long time because of the three pound weight. But I'm so glad I did! I purchased the one man and store my gear outside the tent mostly except for the next days clothes and jackets and shoes and odds and ends go under the vestibule at night. There are video's on the tent but nothing on the very last version they created which seemed to have far superior materials in it. A last hurrah before they discontinued it, but I have still found it out there for sale at the odd store, as many didn't seem to think it was a great tent but I did and I've been camping for over 40 years, so I might know a thing or two....

Thanks pour your review! I bought this tent, and I really regret it! Because the interior dimensions given by MH are greatly exaggerated, and much smaller than in reality! For the dimensions, I just measured them carefully, and found that except for the interior height of 39 inches which is compliant, 5 inches are missing from the length, 4 inches on the largest width (head side), and 4 also on the smallest (foot side)... For an expensive tent, this is very dishonest! The rainfly stretches when wet, and it touches the inner tent. The seams are not waterproof, you have to silicone them yourself, which requires 4 hours of work... The main quality of this tent is its relative lightness and its good wind resistance. For the rest, it seems to me that the new Freelite V3 tent (3rd generation) is a better choice. What is nice about MSR is that their tents are really rectangular, having a comfortable width, without those damn narrow dimensions at the feet, like other brands, including Big Agnes. That loop thing would definitely annoy me…it’s like, “whhhhhyyyyyy”???? I have had the Mountain Hardware Skyledge 3P since 2014, which they discontinued but love it.

There's a typo in the video title - it's Mountain HardWEAR, not HardWARE.

Two person tents are just one person and gear.... May need a 4 person for two see where I am going.... Just my opinion

Yeah. I’ve heard that before. I keep my gear outside so I’ve always been able to use my tent with the designated number of people in it.

I did that once and some items were missing... Some animal or something took my sh#t... And spread it on the Forest floor! Never again. In with me. Now everything.

White is hell when the sun doesn't set. Shouldn't have to wear eye blinds. Also doesn't soak up any heat from the sun.as. Makes a difference up north, guess it's good where it's hot.

I bet! It made for good light while filming in the tent though. But I don’t do that very often.

Well he certainly got more views 🤣. He’s a friend and I texted him as soon as I saw it. I enjoyed his and felt like we came to a lot of the same conclusions. I think it speaks to the value of this tent as a true 2 person tent.

The fact that you’d film and publish a review on a tent you haven’t used in the field is pretty disappointing and undermines your integrity. If you’ve used this tent in any kind of wind or rain you would have found out that the center pole gets pushed over in 15-20mph wind and even morning dew causes the fly to sag an unacceptable amount. Ergonomics of a tent are fine but if it won’t function as a shelter in any less than perfect conditions, it’s useless.

The fact that you would assume what I have and haven’t done with this tent is pretty disappointing. It makes you seem like a troll. I have used this tent in the field. But all the times Ive used it it didn’t rain. Which is why i said I haven’t had this tent in a hard rain. I mentioned the sagging fly, but didn’t attribute it to condensation because it sagged from the beginning. I’m sorry you didn’t like my review. If you didn’t assume things you have no way of knowing you might enjoy a lot of things more.

yeah the real problem with that tent was the two MEN inside it.....MEN is a generic term here. Damnit he was looking at you with a big smile when you took off your shirt. ......not that theres anything wrong with that, but get your wife involved. What a slacker she is. Funny how Hyperlight could knock it out of the park with their black and white marketing...I love the white paks and tents, but it does kinda fall flat here. A good Copper Spur version of a tent although the floor seam is a bit of a crime.
