I've come to the conclusion that if people have done something for centuries, it most likely works. Even if I don't know how or why.

I did a research project on PFAS pollution in Dordrecht, Netherlands from the Tata Steel factory there. It was truly terrifying how the people that live nearby literally will die if they eat the eggs of their chickens or any vegetables they grow in the ground. It's a serious crisis that will be so hard to come back from due to them being forever chemicals. Well done!

Another piece of secret gear is latex gloves under your regular gloves. it will trap a little bit of humidity but that will keep your hands from drying out.

I have a Roofnest, and I love it very much. Recently, I bought a new car, and I was debating if I would move to the new one, so I tried tent camping again, and I realized that I loved the roof tent too much. The roof tent stays much more clean. I campwhere it gets very cold. I camp in bear country. The roof tent keeps you off wet or cold ground and away from critters. I am a woman and camp alone, but I feel much safer in the roof tent. I feel more protected and have window awnings if it is severe weather. Mine has a hard shell on top and 480 lbs of upward struts, making me feel like if parts of a tree or hail come down, I am safe. Mine goes up in two minutes and down in 10 (because I have short arms). I can do things all day and drive in at dark, and up goes the tent, and I crawl into bed. Some nights I am doing a lolong-haulrive, so being able to pull it, pop it up, and sleep is handy. I decided to keep my Honda Element and the tent on the roof and make that my permanent camper vehicle. I know that I am a wimp in my older age but roof tent camping means I am comfortable and sleep well at night feeling much safe for many reasons.

Loads of good info in this video, great job mate. The MSR you show at the begining, you describe it as a chimney type, the more expencive ones seem to have this problem that you cannot use any other pos on it, but there is one that has a pot stand as standard that lets you "Highlander Fastboil 3 Stove 1.1L" Check it out, they are about half the price of the others too.

I paired a WonderLIx with a Nemo pad on the cheap and it's super comfy. I use a North Face Storm 2. GREAT tent, a bit heavy. My Atmos 65 is fine, but the hip belt is a spring loaded PITA; need to change. I use a BRS 3000 and a Toaks; works fine.

My favorite mid weather jacket is the Mountain Hardwear Packdown Jacket. Beside fitting me perfect, I love that it backs down into itself and zips shut into a little bundle. But the thing I like most, which I wish more jackets used were the snap buttons instead of a zipper. The zippers in jackets nearly always are the first thing to fail. The buttons don’t fail. That’s probably why I’ve had my jacket for so long. But it’s so difficult to find an insulating jacket with snap buttons. I can leave some buttons unsnapped but still have it closed if I get warm but don’t want to walk around with it full open. Zippers suck. Snap buttons are so much better. I wish more outwear companies made their jackets with snap buttons.

Your heat test doesn't include the most important thing about the mesh - it's ability to shed excess moisture. If you soaked both layers before starting, I assume the difference would be even greater.

To all the beginners: don't listen to this dude and take the ground sheet for your tent. It will protect your tent and act as a vapor barrier. He apparently has no cue what he's talking about despite claiming to spend so much time outside. Obviously his tents don't get damaged if he takes a different one on every trip 😂

The static test in the fridge doesn't give practical results, because you move during hiking. The air is not trapped but will move around under the outer layer through the mesh. Good for ventilation, but bad for insulation. In the end it has pros and cons.

I love my Big Agnes Rapide SL wide long pad and my Xero Shoes Mesa WP kicks for most stuff. Having grown up with nothing but 20" pads that I hated, the extra pad width is so nice. When I need a new bag, I'll try some stuff out. Will probably get a pillow. In the snow and cold, I have a pair of Merrell insulated boots that are nice and warm. Sitting outside at night in winter, you want insulated.

The temperature gradient, delta T, should drive out the water vapor to the cooler air outside even though it may be at saturation. The cooler temp outside can not hold as much vapor which is true, while the warmer air inside the jacket can - but what if the surface area of the membrane is too cold which then causes the water vapor, that could have otherwise “escaped”, to condense back on the inside of the jacket (water has high surface tension and as a new liquid water particle is formed it might actually attract additional border line water vapor molecules and convince those to condense too right on the inside layer of the jacket! lol 😂What do you think about that?!

-33 "You might not die, but you won't ever be the same either." I can vouch for that. -40 and a very old issue military sleeping bag in a tent that was not set up properly and had wind running through it and no fire. The only night I didn't actually take off my clothes and get into the sleeping bag with my undies as you're supposed to do (to utilise your own bodyheat). I have never been the same since.

Hmm... time for a new shell. I'd also be curious about whether PFAS are in re-treatment products such as Nikwax. Ah, good! I have an old GT shell, but treated it recently with Nikwax. So probably another season, then off to the shredder. Of course, how can you keep it out of the environment when it's in a landfill? That might be worse than just letting it take up space in your closet.
