CLIP DESCRIPTION:
To escape their relentless pursuers, Butch (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) take a leap of faith.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Opening with a silent "movie" of Butch Cassidy's Hole in the Wall Gang, George Roy Hill's comically elegiac Western chronicles the mostly true tale of the outlaws' last months. Witty pals Butch (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) join the Gang in successfully robbing yet another train with their trademark non-lethal style. After the pair rests at the home of Sundance's schoolmarm girlfriend, Etta (Katharine Ross), the Gang robs the same train, but this time, the railroad boss has hired the best trackers in the business to foil the crime. After being tailed over rocks and a river gorge by guys that they can barely identify save for a white hat, Butch and Sundance decide that maybe it's time to try their luck in Bolivia. Taking Etta with them, they live high on ill-gotten Bolivian gains, but Etta leaves after their white-hatted nemesis portentously arrives. Their luck running out, Butch and Sundance are soon holed up in a barn surrounded by scores of Bolivian soldiers who are waiting for the pair to make one last run for it.

Gosh, if there was one famous person I could have Dinner with itd be Mr. Goldman. I've read all his books. A truly fantastic wit, quotable writer, and a DEGENERATE sports nut, this guy was the goods. Cant believe I'm referring to him in the past tense. William Goldman is my favorite screenwriter. I wish that one day I could write anywhere near as well as him. May he rest in eternal peace.

Every time they got together they basically ended up making one of the greatest movies of all time. If you haven't seen it, go watch "The Sting", which they made 4 years after Butch & Sundance. It is every bit as good as this movie...probably even better (although I LOVE Westerns so I prefer this movie). They were both incredibly talented and had such amazing screen presence and chemistry.

To Degree 7 :You're right on that count.Sadly Mr.Newman was in the early stages of cancer that took his life & the rigid physical requirements to do the film was too much for him to overcome. It would've been a nice send off film for the two legends also for George Roy Hill but he had passed on by that time.I saw the film & I thought it was pretty good.Nick Nolte was pretty good too,but it was pretty tough to follow an acting legend in Paul Newman.

There was a somewhat ironic carefree passion for films and tv shows back then. Sure even then it was a business so the main goal was to make money but the filmmakers, actors and everyone else involved were genuinely passionate when they had a great script to work with so there was just more effort put into the work. Not to say there wasn't crappy work then too but the true classics stood out more.

As someone who can’t swim myself i’ve always found this scene and Butch’s quote hilarious. I haven’t personally tried the 200 feet jump into the rapids yet though! 😂

I faced a very difficult decision about 15 years ago, whether to leave a job I'd had for 37 years by taking voluntary redundancy or staying, but I had no idea what lay ahead either way. I call this moment in my life my "Butch Cassidy moment" as by jumping (leaving the job) I had *no* idea what was ahead of (or below) me. I jumped & trusted I'd land in that river, uninjured (which I did!). A wonderful scene by 2 amazing actors & it's my favourite film of all time. Great to see it again.

Butch was right, ya know. That's why Sundance went ahead and jumped. Someone mentioned that this was filmed around Durango, Colorado. I visited that area in 1980, and it is amazingly beautiful. Hope to get back before I get too old to party...

The scene of Butch and Sundance above the river was filmed north of Durango, Colorado, near Baker Bridge. The actors leapt off a cliff face onto a mattress....but the scene of the two stuntmen falling into the river a moment later was filmed in California.

I would say Brad Pitt is closely approaching Redford, as he gets older he seems more comfortable on screen. Especially after the Tarantino hollywood movie, that was very good acting by Brad, pure macho charisma.
